Do I have to play the ds pokemon games in order from old to new to understand them, or can I just skip all the way to pokemon black 1 and be good to go?
Pretty much are the games one big continuous story or their own individual stories, thanks.
As others have said, they are all separate stories, except Black 2 and White 2. I would recommend playing some of the earlier ones though. I feel like Pokemon Black or White would be a great, first game, but Pearl, Platinum, Soul Silver, Heart Gold will also be great to play. My two cents!
None of them are really connected, and the stories are so light anyways, you should have no problem jumping into any of them.
Totally agree with you. I say, don't worry about the story in these games because, at the end of the day, its not going to matter much at all. It all about the pokemon themselves really. Get Black 2, White 2 or wait for X and Y.

black and white had the deepest stories and they still weren't very important, pokemon is about batling and trading so don't worry too much all you've got to know is that you're a kid travelling to beat 8 gyms and then face the 5 best trainers(with some evil team intromissions for the game to get longer)

Listen kid, do you think pokemon is a game?
You're better off playing Pokémon Rumble then the RPG ones, and I should know, I am Prof Oak.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...

To answer the original question, they are all independent stories, so you can start anywhere (though the only downside is you won't understand the cameos of previous trainers).
Second, Imposter Oak was one of the weirdest cards in the TCG

this one was the weirdest(I still remember it from pokemon TCG GBC,or at least the TCG GBC equivalent one that didn't have HP)
