So apparently Phoenix Wright only got a PG rating in Australia. To put this into perspective Pokemon, Smash Bros etc. are rated PG in Australia. Looks like the American rating board has severely overreacted. Everyone can now officially calm down and buy this game. Well, in Australia at least. ;P
The Australian Classification Board is notorious for demanding censored versions of games and overrating others. They rated Earthbound M. In other words they rarely give a game a lower rating than it deserves. By reading the actual classification page it sounds as though this game is going to be typical Phoenix Wright fair.
Yeah, I wish there was an a rating between T and M in the US (Europe, Japan and Australia all have one). This game would probably fit there.
EDIT: Earthbound is M in Australia?! 0_0
EDIT2: Actually, that probably doesn't matter. It seems like a T equivalent over there, since it's not restricted.

That's the thing M is basically our Teen rating. PG is basically an Everyone title that pushes it a bit. MA15+ is equal to your Mature. And our R18+ well it is probably meant to be equivalent to your Mature, but it's a really new rating.
Wasn't Altier Totori Plus, a Vita game that was a port of a PS3 game that got a PG rating, rated R18 in Australia? I don't know if they've got their stuff together over there...
Best thread ever

Yeah, read my little spool about how our ratings compare. M is recommended for mature audience but not restricted. You don't need ID. It got an M rating due to moderate impact drug use, moderate impact sex, and mild violence.

Yeah, I thought it was a widely known fact our rating system was dodgy. Which is why PW getting only a PG rating in Australia is such big news. Our rating board is super strict with our ratings. Obviously this game isn't that bad.
I've been wondering whether the M rating in the U.S. had to do with the game involving a demon posession story, talk of demons even in children's games is not an issue in Japan but americans seem to be sensitive to it. We need an explanation for Gavin's Demon hand thing so that's why I think the game may involve demonic posession or something of the sort that American censors may have deemed M worthy.

The ESRB isn't supposed to operate like that. They aren't supposed to rate according to anything of a religious nature.
Guess I can give up hope that the newest Phoenix Wright game will have graphic gore and a prolonged sex scene.
What are the SMT games rated in other countries? I've never understood why those games have M ratings. I suspect Mara and some of the naked women-looking demons are mostly responsible for that... and the whole summoning demons thing, too, I suppose.
