I have some theories that I though up while playing this game. Mine you, these are just my thoughts so don't bash on me for being completely wrong or vice versa. I just want to you guy's to think about it.
I'll start off with my realistic (and kind of obvious) theory. If you play through the game and got to the mission Pool Party, you meet the Sneakers. The purple ghost that will spook Luigi behind him and interrupt sucking in ghost. There is a ghost similar to the Sneakers, a beta ghost called Purple Bashers in the Beta version of Luigi's Mansion. Purple Bashers would scare Luigi from behind, but unlike the Sneakers, this was their method of attack and take 50 HP. It could be these beta ghost inspired the Sneakers, since both are purple and make catching ghost kinda hard (although it unknown where else the PB would appear since they weren't put in the final version of the game.)
Now here's one that you may take with a cup full of salt, but just think about it. For those who has played the game (and for those who don't have it, I'd recommend you'd give it a look) , You'll know the very common enemy Greenies, ghost with big eyes, slender arms, and no legs. They'er is something about their appearance that (IMO) seems to similar to the three mysterious figures in Super Mario Galaxy 2. In fact, they look a bit TOO similar if you give both a second look.
Now this could be just irrelevant, but here's something else to think about. The three figure are known as "Hell Valley Sky Tree", associated with the sky model "Beyond Hell Valley". Luigi's Mansion: DM takes place on Everyshade Valley which if you look at the opening: http://www.mariowiki.com/images/e/e8/Evershad_valley.png , the back of the valley looks as if it's off a chiff, where the figures would look down on you (well, the part of Evershade Valley is cut off by a fog, so it may be coincidence.) Let's not forget that some things that may connect to both of them (Haunted Towers has a giant tree, the ghost have gone hostlie when the Dark Moon got knocked out of the sky, stuff like that.) It could be possible that 1) Greenie are those figures in SMG2, 2) Greenie were inspired by these figures (meaning Nintendo knew about these hell creatures ALL ALONG), 3) Some of Evershade Valley inspired Beyond Hell Valley in a way, and 4) (the most realistic) It's all just coincidence.
That just my thoughts on the game. I hope you enjoy my own theories on a game (my first theories, ever). Tell me what you think of this.

@KidNo0b The three figures are Japanese forest spirits. I first learned about them in Princess Mononoke, and i suggest you look them up. Because they're tree spirits, and I believe the level is called Shiverburn, the Japanese probably titled the level (during development) as Hell Valley Sky to reference the whole "galaxy" theme (with sky), and the Hell Valley trees are the three little forest spirits were just thrown in as a cultural reference.
Personally, I've had a theory that the plants that overran Haunted Towers were genetic experiments that escaped after the first and second mission. See here:
Think about it. First you see a Carnivorous Plant and Orange Flower in test tubes in the Gardener's Lab:
Then they break out and vanish after about mission 3. Just so conveniantly, this is the same time the mansion gets overrun with carnivorous plants and orange flowers. And then one later shows up in Treacherous Mansion...
Theory fits really well when you consider that these plants also first show up in the Plant Nursery, all places where it seems whoever owned the mansion was experimenting with them.

I searched them up, and it all made a lot of sense. But there are two things that bugs me. One, Why didn't Nintendo of Japan go with the name? They have no excuse to, recent Mario game levels has the word 'Hell' in them. And two, Why was it found in the game data outside Japan, cause if you don't do your research (like you), You'll make up stuff that are way off (like me).

It's very common in Japan to title things like Hell, Devil, Angel, and God. Religion over there isn't nearly as big a deal as it is here.
As for the english file name, I think the direct translation was used.
