@jump: The dates aren't right. The 67 million sales projection is for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. The 55 million sales projection is for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. You missed an entire year there.
I think you guys are being too pessimistic. Nintendo seem to be very bullish about the 3DS for this holiday season so I expect that they have at least one more major unannounced first party project. My money is on Super Mario Maker 3DS.
Tell me, what has Nintendo done to instill confidence in the 3DS' lineup? The 3DS hasn't had a lot of big games since 2013, and Nintendo's lineup in general has been barren since mid-2015. And with the NX coming in 10 months, what do you expect is left for 3DS?

My bad, projected 56m down to 55m with their biggest portable franchise out this year so don't expect any other big hitters.

Pretty sure that isn't true. in 2014 we saw Smash, Pokemon ORAS, Xeodrifter, 3 Lego games, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Azure Striker Gunvolt, and smaller titles.
2015 we saw 2 Zelda games (1 remake, 1 new), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, EU got mario & Luigi Paper Jam, Codename Steam, Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer, Mario vs Donkey kong Tipping Stars, Puzzles & Dragons Z + Super Mario Bros Edition, Pokemon Shuffle, and smaller titles like Pokemon Picross, Box Boy, etc.
So far in 2016 we have had Fire Emblem Fates, Hyrule Warriors Legends, Bravely Second, Lego Marvel to name a few
upcoming in 2016 we have a new Monster hunter, Metroid: Federation Force (whatever your opinion on the GamePlay, it is a big release for the 3DS), Pokemon Sun & Moon, Kirby Planet Robobot, Lego Star Wars plus whatever is announced at E3
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Most of the games you mentioned aren't big games. It's more like this:
2014:
ORAS
Smash
2015:
Triforce Heroes
Super Mystery Dungeon
2016:
FE Fates
Sun/Moon
Kirby Planet Robobot
As opposed to 2013 where we had a blowout of 3DS games, XY, ALBW, FE Awakening, Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion, Mario & Luigi Dream Team. We haven't had a lineup like that, in terms of scale, significance, or volume, ever since, we've had very few main entries in anything and only a handful of retail titles, most of what you're citing is small download stuff and indies.
I fully expect that the remainder of the 3DS lineup is more generic animu third party crap, more download stuff no one cares about, and more indie games. Nothing truly exciting.
@Bolt_Strike: Surely if you're considering Planet Robobot for 2016 then you need to also consider Triple Deluxe for 2014. Also Majora's Mask 3D is a bigger title than Tri Force Heroes so add that in 2015. Monster Hunter is massive in the west so MH4U for 2015 and MHG for 2016. The list goes on.
@Bolt_Strike: That more comes down to opinion. Also, you count Dream team as a big title, but not Paper Jam? You count Kid Icarus but not Codename Steam?
There have been plenty of big games, but if you narrow your focus then you will of course see less games. Indies, Download titles, they can be just as big as a "retail" title. Box boy was a huge success for Nintendo. Shantae was a pretty big deal when it came out.
There are plenty of big games for 3DS if you open yourself up to see them.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was still something like a New Super Mario Bros 3 coming at the end of 3DS's life. I'm pretty sure that there will be some cross-gen action (like with GBA and DS) for Nintendo's new handheld (or hybrid or whatever), so seeing big titles for 3DS wouldn't be surprising. With engines being so easy to port I hope that we even get some handheld-home console stuff like with the latest Smash Bros.

Big as in scale and content, not popularity. Download titles tend to be more bite size experiences.

I don't think I would call Shantae and the Pirate's Curse "bite size." It had a fairly long Story and a good amount of content. Like I said, just open up a bit and you will see the big games. Just because you aren't interested in them or consider them "small" doesn't make it true. Also you might find something you enjoy that you otherwise would have skipped just because you counted it as a "small" title for no real reason.
EDIT: It is similar to when you think about going to the movies but there isn't anything Marvel or Star Wars. Lots of people, including myself sometimes, think there are no "big" movies out. But there actually are, you just need to expand what you are interested in to what others might be interested in. I remember being really shocked at how Jurassic World did so well at first, then I thought about it and realized I was just being closed minded to think that movie couldn't be a "big" movie.

While there are a lot of them, most of the JRPGs on the platform have been very positively recepted, so I don't know where you came up with "crap" (I assume you're referring to the JRPGs with the use of "animu", which isn't a word, BTW). I'd say it's also fair to say that a lot of them should be considered big releases (DQVII & DQVIII will be, unarguably).
You may personally not like JRPGs (and there's nothing wrong with that), but to argue that they're largely "crap" & shouldn't be considered big releases, is a fallacy plain & simple. Hey, if you opened up to them, you may even discover that they have all that exploration you said you've been missing this gen ;P

Bad analogy, because movies are always lengthy, big budget affairs unlike digital games. Digital games are more like if you went to the movies to see a TV episode, it's too short to really justify going through all of the trouble to go out to the movies.

Movies aren't always lengthy, big budget affairs. Kids make movies on their phones all the time. Sure, most of those may not be high quality, but sometimes they can be good. Digital is just easier way to sell a product than trying to release a physical product in stores, it really doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the product.

The games that are exclusively digital tend to be smaller and cheaper.

The ones in theaters are.
Not always. There have been some pretty low budget films that have been released in theaters. Some big hitters in the theater have had pretty low budgets too. Wasn't Deadpool's budget pretty low?

Not all of them, that is just generalizing. There have been digital only games that were pretty big. Fatal Frame for Wii U was digital in the US, but that was a pretty big game... I gotta play more of that, loved what I did play lol
