I am in two minds what to do with the release of the switch lite.
I have 2 boys and they have a PS4 which they love my intention was to get them a 2DS XL each for portable use but with the switch lite now coming out, I can’t help but think I’m maybe just wasting cash on the 2DS XL and will end up with a switch lite sooner than later.
The boys are 5 and 7 and I feel the 2DS XL is prob more suited to the with the back catalog of games. The screen on the switch lite looks like it could see some damage by them!!
What’s people’s thoughts would they still buy the 2DS XL in the today’s market?
Yeah I'd say go for it, it's cheaper than a Switch and as you say it would hopefully be less likely to get damaged. The 3DS line (including the 2DS) has an amazing library of games that should keep them busy for years.
As you said, the backlog is incredible on the 3DS. Value-wise, the 2DS XL is cheaper and has the dual screens which can fold over when they're being carried - protecting the screen
Realistically, it all depends on which games your kids want - both have Marios, Zeldas, Mario Karts etc, but the Switch ones are larger and have more content. At the end if the day, its your decision as to what you think your kids would get more value out of.
2ds is superb. It has many great games you can puck up on the cheap, and it is, as you say, very durable.
I would only buy them a Switch instead if I knew all their friends had one and they would feel left out without it.

With New 2DS XL, you can play BOTH 3DS and NDS games.
3DS games are Region Lock , but NDS games are Region FREE.
NDS have tons of great games despite of decent graphic quality.
Even NDS games are too old for this year, but you can introduce to your kids about NDS games.
Great games doesn't matter with the year release.
As long they have genuine interest, even with low quality graphic of NDS games, it will captivate them with interesting way to play from NDS games.
Recommended 3DS & NDS games for kids : 3DS
1. Mario Kart 7
2. Animal Crossing New Leaf: Welcome Amiibo
3. Pokemon X / Y / Alpha Sapphire / Omega Ruby
4. Fantasy Life
5. Super Mario 3D Land
NDS
1. Hi Hamtaro! Ham Ham Challenge
2. MySims Party
3. MySims Agents
4. Animal Boxing
5. Bomberman games
Yes as unlike the single screen handhelds (GB, GBC, GBA), the dual screen handhelds (DS, 3DS) can't be represented well on a single screen. So the dual screen era will be lost forever once Nintendo discontinues the New 2DS XL.
Here in the UK at least one 2DS XL is £129 whereas a Switch is about £250 each if you're lucky. Much better value to get a 2DS XL at the moment. Even the Switch Lite releases at £199, so 2DS is still better value.
Screen protectors and case for the lite would be a definite for sure.
2DS XL has the advantage of being cheaper at £135 but lite only £65 more for what is obviously the better handheld and way the handheld is going in the future.
Only games they would really have would be the Nintendo exclusive (Mario kart, Mario Bro’s, Pokemon)
They have the PS4 for a main console and this is only an extra for mainly as above Mario and Pokemon.
I thought about just getting a switch but really don’t want 2 main consoles in the house! 1 is enough trouble!
@rsbhj Going forward, the Switch/Lite will have the new games, but the 2DS XL has the benefit of having a huge back catalogue meaning that for birthdays, Christmas etc. they could still have a "new" game. Also just to let you know, as I said above, you can get the 2DS XL for £129 at GAME.
One benefit of the 2DS XL was the learning games you can get for kids with maths, English etc. Does the switch also have similar?
I suppose the main thing for me is that I can see switch or switch lite more than likely being purchased in the next couple years so it’s weather I go with cheaper option the now knowing I’ll have pay out again in a couple years or just take that step now and it can see them through a few years!
Thanks for that...so obviously the design is significantly different and XL is more powerful, is one better for kids 5 & 7 with design I.e holding the device smaller hands
@rsbhj Nintendo say the original 2DS is better for kids, but in my experience, the XL isn't much bigger, so I'd have thought the XL was more comfortable. For the record, I don't own a 2DS or a 2DS XL.
@rsbhj
I would say if your kids want ALL the new games, go for the switch lite. Just keep in mind that online is paid for, and everything is a bit more expensive.
However, the 2DS XL has an amazing backlog for cheaper and fantastic games. The entire 3DS family is my favorite set of handheld consoles ever, and it has so many great memories. Also keep in mine that 2DS XLs can play both 3DS and DS games, strengthing the library even more.
It really depends on if you want the latest and greatest, or the older abundence of quality, for cheaper. You can't go wrong either way.
Nice >:]
I do stupid stuff on youtube.com/mysticbros, so check it out if your bored or whatever.
Or don't, it's your time after all.

"One benefit of the 2DS XL was the learning games you can get for kids with maths, English etc"
Then, NDS games are the right answer for New 2DS XL.
Some of Educational NDS games:
1. Hi Hamtaro! Ham Ham Challenge
2. Are you smarter than 5th Grade
3. My Sims Agents
etc
But Switch also have some Educational games that mostly on Switch eshop as digital games format, not available in physical release.
There are some Educational Switch games as Sudoku, Tetris 99, Color Zen, etc.
