@MFD If hopefully Nintendo sticks with the hybrid approach, this should be the last time we see a small jump in performance and graphics. Every other Nintendo system from now on should be a big jump. They'll always be behind Sony and Microsoft, but it's nowhere as big an issue as it was in the Wii days. Switch graphics still look really nice and are perfectly fine.
And while it hasn't been evident yet, this hybrid approach is very definitely the best approach Nintendo could take - merging home and portable into one. As a home console gamer you'll start to see the fruits of this next year, when Nintendo starts bringing traditionally portable games like Fire Emblem and potentially Pokemon to the system. You'll be getting way way way more games if Nintendo has to only support one system instead of two. So there is a huge benefit to the hybrid approach, even if you don't use it as a handheld often. And in terms of price, within a few years it should decrease in price enough that you should feel comfortable carrying it around, so I wouldn't say price is really an issue.
Nintendo could easily announce a bunch of 1st party 3DS games in the rumoured January Direct, especially as the new Nintendo doesn't like revealing games too far in advance. What we know now means nothing at this point because of the new approach.
Until it stops selling I assume, PS3 sold for way past its successor in Japan and was discontinued when even the VITA a modern console was doing week by week worse than it. The 3DS is old but it really isn't doing too bad in sales. I assume it will be cancelled after all first and third parties are done and there isnt a pokemon game in development. Prediction: November 2018
People might think I'm childish for my picture, and I am.
Favorite games: Super Mario Odyssey, Super Metroid, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, and Sonic Generations
If you like Kirby, then you are a person I can trust.
@shadow-wolf Here's the thing, I don't trust Game Freak in regards to Pokemon. They've handheld developed and are so heavily clinging to the whole handheld aspect for trading, that I'm afraid they'll limit features to that mode. I'll be seriously surprised if they DON'T do that.
@iLikeUrAttitude You know this creepy timing of people making numerous threads to complain about something perfectly foreshadowing said event reminds me of when numerous threads popped up after E3 2015 saying Satoru Iwata should resign.
Two weeks later we knew what happened.
Quick, everyone make threads complaining about F-Zero not getting a game
Now Playing: Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Crash Bandicoot 4
I don't mind them making more 3DS games, and they've almost certainly got some in the pipeline given the long lead times for development and their risk averse approach to launching the Switch.
It'd just make sense to release them on the Switch as well, where possible, seeing as it's capable of fulfilling much the same niche.
I hope nintendo will continue to support it. The install base is huge, the library is huge, the ds library is huge. Not everyone can afford a switch. Sure, the numbers of new game releases will decline but I hope there is gonna be some great games coming.
Probably around the time Vita kicks the bucket in 2037
I mean, for all intents and purposes, it's dead already. Just like Vita. But I'm sure it will continue getting the occasional notable release for some time.

@JaxonH It'll probably die sooner in other countries than in Japan. RPGs and mobile gaming are still huge there. Even the vita is still getting games from Japanese developers.
It's pretty much already done. You can tell by the decreased sales figures. Fire Emblem Echoes only sold about half a million, compared to about 2 million for the previous Fire Emblem 3DS games.
Metroid hasn't even hit half a million yet. But possibly will over the coming year.
The few JRPGs that are coming in 2018 like Alliance Alive, Radiant Historia and DQ11 will probably sell almost nothing in the west. Already a niche genre.
@Dezzy FE Echoes is very different from the Awakening and Fates style so reduced sales were going to happen anyway and Metroid doesn't sell well in general.
I realise it's not the highest selling series but it's definitely a lot higher than this. Prime sold about 3 million I believe.
Given that the 3DS has a bigger install base than the gamecube, it doesn't seem too extreme to expect it to at least hit 1 million.
That's sad... i love my 3ds but didn't buy it years ago for a ton of remakes & rpg's... NOA has put enough rpg's on the 3ds in the last 2 years already to last a life time. Personally i hope they get this rpg kick out of there system by now. Not to mention they release 1 whole girl game (style savvy styling star 3ds) for 2017. It's basically saying to whose who are female gamers: Toss the dog a bone... NOT an RPG fan in the least. Personally i like simulation, adventure, music etc in games so far my cash has went to other projects this & not gaming which is depressing because i love playing my 3ds but nothing new to bother to download. Got the new Luvabeau boy doll instead! 😊 Sorry to vent all that...
