Nah, he's holding it. I'm pretty sure it's just the really weird angle that you can't see his arm.

Anyways, you can't play in competitive multiplayer but you do have Street Pass Teams, Serenes has a page on it, there is also Dual Tagging, which is co-operative multiplayer.
