I don't really see how that's a sign of anything, honestly.

Doesn't talk about games.

It's a mainline Dragon Quest game, so I wouldn't be too worried about the VII remake not making its way over here at some point.

Indeed. It'll require the most comprehensive remake since DQ3 GBC. I hope it gets it.

I know this is from October, but can you clarify this?
Are you saying that DQ3 GBC needs a complete overhaul or that it was a comprehensive remake?

DQ3 GBC was the most comprehensive remake of a DQ game to date, as far as I can tell.

Well, this is certainly a good start. Plus 3D graphics and on screen enemies, this is at least shaping up. Now we just need classes rebalanced and some dungeons reworked, and this could wind up being pretty great.

Yeah I've already seen enough to be willing to give it another shot, but sadly the shards are returning. Collecting shards was one of the biggest headaches of the PSX version. They better be serious about not hiding them in the most random places this time. To anyone unfamiliar with the old game--you can't progress the story until you find all the shards.

Oh, OK, I was worried that you weren't happy with GBC 3 and that it needed an overhaul. (I translated it years ago for Enix USA.)

There've been plenty of overhauls, though. Like SFC 1 ~ 3 (Wii 1 ~ 3), PS 4, DS 4 ~ 6.

Just wanted to pop in and say I've been seeing ads for this game all over stores in my area (Kanagawa prefecture). This game is going to sell big, I can tell.

I never played a Dragon Quest game though :(

According to wiki, the JP DS-release numbers were: IV remake (1.27 million), V remake (1.23 million), VI remake (1.35 million), IX original (4.37 million).
Being a remake and for 3DS's smaller user base, I guess it'd still do over a million, which sure counts as selling big. I'm just curious if it will become a monster like Animal Crossing (2.6 million according to Famitsu, but I don't think this includes the download version), I'm thinking probably not.

Haha, sorry Monster Hunter 3G, Ni no Kuni, Bravely Default, Fire Emblem and the Layton games take up my gaming time. ;)

Here are some more details on the remake, from Square-Enix:

  • Dragon Quest series producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto has personally always wanted to remake Dragon Quest VII for a portable system
  • the amount of documents used to develop Dragon Quest VII was insane
  • Dragon Quest VII has so much that Square-Enix has its own section for it
  • the team had to go through every single document for the remake
  • there are about 40 books of documents, consisting of the scenario texts alone
  • took about a year to copy everything from paper to stored data on PC
  • they used this time to think of new ideas for the remake
  • focus was on how to best utilize the 3DS graphics and its features
  • Fujimoto sat down and played through the PlayStation version of Dragon Quest VII with Yuji Hori
  • Hori realized how difficult the game was with all the problem solving and puzzles.
  • the original idea for the game was to make a "riddle solving adventure"
  • Fujimoto said, "Solving some of the puzzles felt very exhilarating at times. Whenever you got stuck in the game, the frustration would build up."
  • added features like stone shard radars and worked on making the overall tempo better for a smoother game play
  • in the original, it took a good hour or longer until the first fight
  • the remake introduces fighting much earlier
  • increasing the leveling pace so it can be up to par with the other DQ titles
  • this is why visual encounters were added
  • idea is to make the game easier to play, not making it easier overall
  • useful spells, such as Evac (used to escape from dungeons,) are available at earlier levels in the game.
  • class exclusive costumes that visually correspond to each class.
  • put a lot of thought into the camera works
  • players have two different angles to play from, which can be adjusted at any time

Thank you G-d! I mean, all those points sound great, but these 3 are the big ones. The original took far too long to get to actual gameplay. I don't care if it's just a prologue section, I'd rather see fights sooner than later, especially if I was new to the game. Also, they're finally makibng it so you level up faster, and balancing it out with non-random encounters so it doesn't get too easy. That's what I like to hear. There's hope for this one, yet!
