They laid on the angst pretty thick with Godot's exit. His arc was completely wrapped up and with Laurice's picture at the end... yeah, count me as part of the jury that believes he won't be making a return.

I'm on the final case of Apollo Justice then just two games left before I can sit here impatiently waiting for AA6. Wonder what the English subtitle is going to be, they've been pretty fitting so far.

It's clearly very doubtful... I was just doing some wishful thinking. The fact that it's set under an Asian setting (which is sh*t, the series has already done it about a thousand times and I haven't liked it since the beginning) pretty much shows that there will be little to no recurring characters. I mean, it kind of makes since with Gaspen, but they can't take a bunch of characters and have them be like "Hey I'm vacationing to Superjapanesecultureland! And oh crap, someone just got murdered so now I have to take a secondary role in a trial!"
It would be cool if a villain from an old case escaped prison and started a new life in the foreign country though.

I think it'll be pretty easy to bring back old characters. I remember them saying that when Apollo was reconfirmed to be returning, his cases would take place in the city, while Phoenix's cases take place in Not-Japan

Yeah, with the supposed dual setting of the game it wouldn't be hard to bring back old characters for the Japanifornia parts. As for returning characters appearing in Kurain though, the only ones I can see as a possibility are The Feys, Edgeworth, Franziska, and/or Larry. They're going back into mediums/spiritual power with this game so that's a no brainer excuse for Fey clan appearances, Edgey and Franny are usually flying out the country for one reason or another so could be working on a case there, and Larry's always off chasing short lived flames so finding him in a foreign country isn't too big of a stretch either.

@-Godot: I do like your idea of a old villain coming back... I wouldn't mind seeing Dee Vasquez, Engarde, or Ini Miney again. Damon Gant is my favorite but I really doubt he didn't get the death penalty for all his crimes. Speaking of... shouldn't Lana be through with whatever sentence she got by now? It'd be boss to see her return as a prosecutor especially with Ema on investigations.

I'm probably the only person who wants to see Franziska back the most

I really want Franziska back too! I could use some more whip action.

But all this talk about old characters and no mention of Detective Gumshoe? I'm disappointed.

@Megas75

No, you're not. Franziska's at the top of my list of OT characters I'd like to see return. Edgeworth too (yeah, I'm a fangirl lol)... but he's appeared in every game except AJ so I'm not worried about his chances. I wouldn't mind Gumshoe showing up either but I really want Ema and her lethal Snackoos as the detective for Apollo again.

Speaking of AJ, I finished it last night. I can understand the common criticisms about it but I absolutely adored Apollo himself. Now I'm really looking forward to playing Dual Destinies (in which he apparently gets so awesome that he won a fan poll over Phoenix and Edgeworth?!) and AA6 even more just for his role.

I for one thought AA5 was a pretty good game and was hardly disappionted. Not as great as the original games of course but still a pretty good game. That being said, I feel like given the setting this game takes place in, it would be more than fitting to see Maya return.

I just typed a really long post, and it disappeared when I tried to post it... I don't even remember much of what I was talking about.
Oh yeah, has anyone checked out this page? Here's the description of the story...
"Phoenix Wright travels to the Kingdom of Kurain. When his tour guide is arrested, he offers to go watch the trial. Upon learning that the country's courtroom has no defense attorneys, and instead relies on oracles to render its verdicts, he raises an objection and springs into action. Communion with otherworldly spirits is a concept previously only used with the Fey clan. The developers have explained that they felt that no one could prove a match for Phoenix Wright anymore in his usual setting, so they moved him to a foreign country with a different court system, which would provide a sense of urgency not seen in his usual games.
Meanwhile, Apollo Justice remains in his usual setting in Los Angeles, handling cases for the Wright Anything Agency."
And here's the description of the gameplay:
"Due to feedback that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies gave too many hints to the player, the developers are aiming to have fewer direct clues in Ace Attorney 6, as well as giving the player the option of disabling the appearance of hints in the dialogue.
A new gameplay element involves a "water mirror" on the floor of the courtroom. Mediums are able to use the mirror to show what a victim saw and felt during their final moments.
Like Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken, Ace Attorney 6 uses the "five strike" penalty system from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. This will be the first main series Ace Attorney game since Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney to use this system, rather than the variable health bar-like "Confidence Gauge" system that has been in place since Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All."
I got excited after reading the story part, thinking this meant Apollo would handle some cases in Los Angeles, but Apollo's description states that he "finds himself standing at the defense bench in a Kurain courtroom appearing to face someone from his past". Oh well.

As for this person at the end of the extended trailer... I think it's Maya.
It would make sense if Maya was absent from Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies because something happened between her and Phoenix. In Apollo Justice, he vaguely hints at Maya as if she never existed. Maybe in this game, she becomes a prosecutor so she can see him again, and get her revenge. When she tries to face him in court, Phoenix, somehow, becomes unable to act as a lawyer during the trial, or for the first part of it, so Apollo fills in. The setting is a "Kurain Kingdom", so her being there would make sense. It could be Maya, or maybe it's Iris, who would fit well too. It does say that it's a person from Apollo's past, though. Maybe it's Juniper then... I don't know, it's likely they're just building up for a new character.

Interesting that they are bringing back the 5 Strikes, although, didn't Great Ace Attorney do the same? I suppose it doesn't count since it's Japan only.

Dual Destinies essentially had the 5 Strike system as well, because every penalty is one fifth of the confidence gauge. I can only recall one instance where you were threatened with a double penalty. And I truly hope double penalties return in this game as well.

Maya as a prosecutor? I just can't see it that way. It completely goes against everything she stood for in the first three games.

As for someone in Apollo's past, it most likely is someone from his past that we don't know about...yet.

It is weird how Athena isn't even mentioned.

I can see Maya returning for obvious reasons, but for revenge? That's a stretch.

As for the villains in previous games, I would like them to have good reasons for coming back. Most of their stories ended already.

It wouldn't make any sense for her to just disappear, unless they don't show Apollo until he comes to the Kurain culture-place. Maybe he just ditches her and goes there on his own.
The butterfly probably implies a female character, and no female characters from Apollo's past really make any sense... Maybe Thalassa Gramarye, but that's reaaaaally a stretch. It's probably just a new character... But Apollo's phrasing really doesn't make it sound that way.

The butterfly makes me think of Lamiroir ! Her story wasn't really complete anyway, it must to be her !

@Mineral Her whereabouts were unclear at the end of Apollo Justice, and she would totally fit how Apollo described the silhouetted character. Why would she become a prosecutor though?

Interesting theory about Maya but I wouldn't use AJ to point towards a potential fallout with Phoenix. The game just did with Maya (and Mia) what AAI did with Phoenix, giving nods to the character but not name dropping. The Steel Samurai DVD's he got from her, if anything, seemed like more of a clue that they still talked and were on friendly terms. Plus AJ had most of the OT cast missing/not even mentioned, I think Maya's just been missing because the writers honestly couldn't find a good enough reason for her to return.

Apollo's phrasing seems like one of those well timed edits for suspense/hype factor, I wouldn't analyze it too much honestly. It'll most likely be a new character as the main prosecutor again since it's been that way with every game so far.

Athena may have a smaller role this time around but there'll probably be at least one case where she's playable. The game is coming next year so they got plenty of time to drip feed information.

I'm on the final story case of Dual Destinies now. Apollo taking off is the best thing that has happened with the character in a long time. I'm tired of him, his stupid catch-phrase, and his annoying super-power. Really disappointed to see him making a return in the next game.

Athena Cykes isn't perfect, but she seems to have an interesting backstory, has a fun super-power, and I love her court animations.

As to Dual Destinies... it's already miles better than Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice and Justice For All, other than that unfortunate second case. The constant typo's are annoying, but that's the fault of a sloppy localization team.

@Ralizah: I found the third case to be the bad one. It dragged on for so long and overall wasnt that very interesting at all to me. Maybe your reasons for disliking the second casehas to do with your overall dislike of Apollo?

@GamecubeMan: No, I didn't care for the insipid mystery, annoying characters, or the weird yokai wrestler thing it had going. It reminds me a lot of that circus case from Justice for All, minus any correlate to the annoying clown cross-examination.

So far, the third case is the best single case in this game. It was a cool mystery, and aside from the weird statue guy, I liked the new characters. Moreover, Klavier Gavin shows up to help (the hot Gavin brothers were the best thing from Apollo's game)! I also liked the thematic focus on pursuing the truth versus getting results.
