Re: Toei Animation Europe Website Removes 2021 Release Date For Digimon Survive

twincast

The reason that this was greenlit is that Bandai got convinced to go after the now-adult fans that grew up with one or more of the first five TV series after their two attempts (each after a significant period with little to no new Digimon material at all) at increasingly severe revamps aiming for the pocket money of new generations of children had failed miserably at grabbing a new audience while turning off most of their existing one, ultimately leading to this pleasant surprise of a full-blown survival horror visual novel with point-and-click puzzles and tactical combat hybrid of all things.

Anyone thinking that the rumored "development overhaul" would be them replacing the cast with the one from Digimon Adventure was being nonsensical, but I do worry that with their reboot of the original series clearly being aimed both at the nostalgia of thirty-somethings (to secure ratings/sales) as well as elementary school students of today (to finally get a major influx of new blood in their audience again) that they'll wuss out on its inherent mature nature and make it kid-friendly - exacerbated by the (extremely dumbed-down) new card game reportedly doing pretty well. Personally, I can do very well sans death and gore, but you can't just cut off a horror game at its knees like that (pun fully intended), especially when you were hoping for it to be the third leg of the franchise in the video game market (and like the sixth or so for all of Digimon).

@Arehexes I hear about U.S. banks being beyotches about international purchases so often, it utterly blows my mind.

Anyway, I don't import as much as I used to, but taking all cost factors (base price, S&H, exchange rates, taxes/tariffs) into consideration li'l ol' European me, too, ends up paying more than for local releases - and that's with affordable shipping, which can take months. Thankfully I've never cared about playing ASAP.

We first heard of P5S after P5R. Atlus wouldn't do two different enhanced remasters at round about the same time, and if it were just a plain P5 port, it wouldn't get a different name, so when viewed with a sober mind, it was always clear that P5S would be a spin-off, but yet another Musou game of all things? It's as if there were no more Japanese developers outside Koei-Tecmo to work with on an action game. Gimme a Persona May Cry, for instance.

That said, while Atlus/Sega were under no obligation to quell any rumors, once the hype train got going, it would've been sound of mind to prevent the reveal from inevitably blowing up in their face.

My top two easily are Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Third place goes to Donkey Kong. Followed by the Pokémon games, the Donkey Kong Land trilogy, and the first two Super Mario Lands. All first party. Heh. Hard to imagine (and sad to think about) that for almost 25 years now I've been gushing over Wario Land - The gameplay! The level design! The Kitchen Island map! The way several levels change throughout the game! The secret passages! Most of the bosses! - and yet it's never had a true sequel. Wario Land 2 onward are fine games in their own right, but with vastly different (and at least to me less engaging) gameplay, and why Nintendo stopped with the immersive island maps for their Mario games altogether and went back to unconnected worlds with unimaginative roads going strictly left to right (with the occasional optional stop on the side) is utterly beyond me. The only complaint I have with SML3 is that you can't open the treasure chests when wearing the dragon hat.
Edit: I totally forgot about Wario Land for the Virtual Boy. That one at least preserved the gameplay, but it already lacked the island map. Seriously, Nintendo, what's the deal with that?
