I can understand and respect that decision for more novice gamers, however the game is advertised for "hardcore" players. Games of this nature rely on split second timing and jumping, in order to truly master. (Its kind of the nature of the beast). While playing the game I tried to switch it up by using the A button for my first jump, then switching to B for the double (since all the buttons act the same) which puts that pause between hits, but still it failed on numerous occasions. You are right though, if you stick with it, it can be beat, which I did eventually do. Unfortunately, the jumping issue was to problematic for me to overlook and enjoy it.
It's not very often the fans get to interact with people behind the games directly, so I hope if anything the feedback, good or bad, helps for future projects!
I'm not one to ever argue a score on this site, but I picked up this game the other morning and I immediately wanted my $3 back. The controls are so unresponsive it let to half my death tally, And on top of it, the frame rate is ATROCIOUS. When you have a game the boasts a one button control and a constantly scrolling screen, these are two major components that just have to be spot on. Given all that, I still managed to beat most of it, just in the hopes it would improve. Sadly it never did.
This may be one of the most important articles written about the state of gaming today, let alone the Wii U. I say that because it was written by, essentially, a fan. Even though he writes for a Nintendo site, there are, as everyone points out, doom and gloom articles written about the big N all the time. But its these types of retrospective articles that really define what these games mean to people on a much more personal level and ultimately make everyone else understand that feeling.
Its kind of like the end scene in Elf. where no ones believes in santa anymore until Zooey Deschanel starts singing, and reinvigorates everyones love for the holiday. Well, in this case 3D World is doing the singing, and suddenly people are believing in Nintendo again.
@Drobotic Thank you for being one of the few on this thread with some good taste! Both shows are amazing, and the humor is perfectly fitted with the shows. Being a MASSIVE 90's animation fan, these 2 are brilliant. If people dont like em, well, its their loss!
I think this is awesome. A lot of people may just say, "well bring the games to the virtual console and there wouldn't be a need for something like this". to that i say, nay. the advent of the VC is fantastic. it allows you to play your classic games without the frustration of old carts, or bad connections (to name a few). the problem though, is that part of the retro experience, is actually experiencing the game on its native console, with the original controller, and the original graphics. (fuzzy or not). so being able to pick up an snes controller and doing battle will always win out over a VC release. for me at least. I love this idea.
snowboard kids is fantastic! played the heck out of it both when it came out and now. My friends all seem to have a problem with the controls in it. I dunno, they must just be terrible at video games...
it's odd that i'm more excited about these mobile games (fiesta run, trials) than I am about a lot of console releases coming up. I almost feel like a traitor to my consoles!
What is everyone complaining about with this jumping nonsense? All Dave pointed out is that you couldn't adjust in mid-air and it can lead to deaths. In the NES era, there were some games where you could, and others where you couldn't. All he's trying to say is that it's as frustrating today, as it was in 1989 when people played it for the first time. Great Review!
@Rerun I don't think it's the beginning of the end for them. It's seems that with all the projects wayforward has its hands in right now, we are going to get some great games. That said, this game just looks rushed. As if they slapped it together so they could get back to the games they actually care about. It's a bit of a blemish for them, but that's all. People will forget it even exists.
@Gustaf89 I am having really hard time digesting your comment. Either you truly don't understand what "shovelware" is, or you just love bad games. Aladdin, lion king, and ducktails are CLASSIC examples platforming games when they were in their prime, and are arguably some of the best in the entire genre. That's why people want them remade, and still talk about them. I have played this smurf game, and the review practically took the words out of my mouth. I understand that it's aimed towards kids, but I almost find it insulting to think that young gamers can't handle more than a flat surface with a couple jumps thrown in. They made one level and changed the colors. It's lazy.
"This is a title that does go against a variety of current gaming trends"
In fairness, this is like the millionth game to have zombies in it. I wouldnt say doing what every other franchise is doing is "going against trends". This game could have been 1000% better had they stuck with original, ORIGINAL idea.
That being said the game isnt all bad, however the slow attacks are what kills it for me. so much time between hits is ridiculously annoying and not exactly very real. If I was being chased by hoards of the undead, you better believe id be swinging that bat as fast as I could.
if only they would start making games like this again. sure they are making new platformers for the 3ds and what not, but damn. these games had charm you dont find anymore.
What i find funny about everyone sticking up for this game is that when they do (you included), you start off by being appalled and rage filled over the review but then go on to point out all the things that you dont like about it. first you start off by saying "This is the only time I've felt rage at an NL review. Air Ride is one of my favorite games on the Gamecube, period." But then further down you add "Cut some of the fat(Top Ride), give us more variety(more maps in Air Ride/City Trial), and maybe some other stuff, and the game could really be fun." Could be fun? you just said it was one of your favorite games...didnt you? You have fond memories of it, I get it, but the score is exactly what it deserves. And a six is still saying the game is worth playing and picking up, just that it was simple and didnt offer much degree of difficulty. Go re-read the rating system and you'll see that a 6 a still a good score.
also, i never said "back in the day" in my first post, therefore its not a quote. just saying.
I feel like everyone who is giving the score some slack is doing so based on their memories of playing this game in the past. If all reviews were written based on that, I would say that Clay Fighter deserves a 9/10 (which is clearly doesn't). This is the type of game that I can only play for about 10 minutes at a time, because thats how long it takes to play every mode in the game. Sure there are other levels but its just more of the same. I think the reviewer is spot on with his diagnosis of the game. Just because its fun, doesn't mean its a great game. The only reason I could see the score going up from where it is now, is because since the controls are so simple you can play it with literally one hand. Which means I can play the game, and drink my beer at the same time. Cheers on the review, looking forward to the next one!
