Battle mode hasn't been fun since Mario Kart 64 (except for DS) Battle mode is more fun in some sort of Battle Arena. There need to be obstacles to dodge and hide behind so there can be some sort of concept of strategy and tactics. That is what made battle mode a different "mode" of play. With no overmap and the courses being so huge, you really can't have a fun 4 player local game like you used to.
I love Nintendo & Mario Kart, I would play battle mode for hours with friends on the Super Nintendo and N64 versions, but it's just not the same concept any more.
I can't clearly tell if the author dislikes "FPS on wheels" but my friends and I loved it. I would love to see the feather brought back as an item as well.
PS I also miss being able to "trail" a shell / banana peel as defense and still be able to pick up a new item. Ditto for the 3 shells.
GP mode is fantastic, the graphics are beautiful, I enjoy the coin unlocks. I like the new and reimagined classic courses.
