I have to be honest that I am shocked the first one did not quite achieve cult status. I bought it a few years back and my wife and I have had on and off again addictions to it. It’s a pretty perfect game for when you have a short amount of time. It really hits that “Tetris” vibe for me. I just happen to be into it again right now. In forty years of gaining it’s probably the best $3 I have ever spent.
Scores aside, the drama around Beyond seems rather silly. While I have not completed the game, the 5 hours I have put in so far feel like a close to perfect re-introduction to Metroid. Scoring Beyond relative to the other games feels unfair-multiple gaming generations have passed. While I understand some of the dislikes about Beyond, they feel like they have received outsized attention and have been a distraction from what is really a phenomenal game. Like others, I would love to have had an opportunity to have seen Metroid 2025’s BoTW moment. But it feels like a lot of reviewers forget that the first Metroid Prime may have been the original BoTW moment. It was one of the most shocking changes to have experienced as a gamer (unless you count Adventures of Link vs. OG Zelda). If this is the start of a “new” series, Beyond feels like the right way to bring Metroid back before any additional significant changes. For those who have been dissuaded by reviews, I encourage you to pick it up. While there are quirks one may dislike or be annoyed by, ultimately, if you enjoy Metroid, and particularly its atmosphere, the first few biomes are amongst the best I have played in any game.
I was totally dreading Myles, but at worst he is a short term annoyance.
I went into the first Hollow Knight after a very long by break from console gaming, and was not familiar with a lot of the new super challenging games (Souls). I bounced a number of times but eventually completed the base game- it certainly required a new mindset and new way to play- often reminding me of the good old NES days.
I haven’t (with one exception) found the new one more frustrating or difficult so far (I’m about 3/4 done with act one). That said, the pogoing in Hunter’s March is abysmal lol.
I bounced several times before beating the “first” ending last year. I really didn’t like the first few hours, but it really settles into being an incredible game. A few sections are some of the most memorable gaming I’ve had in 40 plus years of gaming. It did get a little long, but glad I got through it and am really excited for silksong.
As someone who strongly prefers handheld gaming to being tied to a PC or a TV, having access to both has been a dream state that has offered me the opportunity to play almost any game I would want. Switch 2 should up the ante a bit. arguments above are missing some key points, such as the unbelievable discounts that steam does offer on AAA games that we don’t see even on Deku deals. But it all comes down to affordability and preference for games. Both are incredible devices and I’m just really fortunate enough to be able to have afforded both.
I’ve read a few people mentioning the prices of NES games being really high. With a few exceptions (iirc, Nobunaga’s Revenge was one) most games were $49 in the US). There may have been other, but to say regularly seems facetious.
I was all in for day one. I can accept the incremental increase in price, as was the case with TOTK. But $80 seems like fleecing. I say that as someone who has been buying Nintendo stuff since the OG NES with the light gun and Rob the robot. Nintendo seemed to be in a sweet spot for this Switch 2 to continue their success. This is disappointing. Based on other’s comments here and elsewhere, I’m not an outlier. The arguments about inflation and game prices not increasing for decades have a logic. A $10 increase over the last generation is palatable. A $20 (plus physical tax) borders on arrogance. I haven’t made a final decision, but I’m certainly leaning towards a wait and see approach with Switch 2.

Re: "Don't Let Nintendo Ruin The Entire Industry" - Is $80 For Mario Kart World A Bridge Too Far?
@Guddy
Thanks for sharing- the regional context was important. I remember “imported” games in the US being pricier.

Re: 50 Best NES Games Of All Time
Would probably be impossible to have a list, but would be curious to see the results or a list from those who played NES at the time.
That said, odd to see no Data East games on the list. Someone else posted about Kid Niki; I loved Karnov back in the day.
RC Pro-Am needs to find a place on the list. A few others would be Kung Fu, Wizards and Warriors (both, though I doubt they hold up), 1943, Top Gun.
