@GuitarAnthony Mappy is way better than Pole Position in my opinion. The reason why Mappy did not do well here in the US back in 1983 is because people did not give it a chance at the time and not many Arcades have the game for people in the US to check it out. Doesn't help that the game crash in 1983 happen as well, which is responsible for lot of games in 1983 to not get huge success here in the US, which goes back to people not giving it a proper chance. Mappy is a really great classic and it's a game that deserves more recognition. Mappy series is similar to Nintendo's Mother series where Mappy is much more popular in Japan, but has niche popularity here in the US. Except Mappy suffers more than Mother since even to this day, Mappy still doesn't have much recognition and it isn't talked much about in the gaming community even to this day here in the US. At-least Eathbound series has that in cult following over the years. Mappy suffered through obscurity, which isn't fair for the Mappy series because the Mappy games are actually really great and has lot of charm. Some of Namco's finest works if you ask me. Mappy series deserves a lot of praise.
I'm extremely happy that Mappy and Hopping Mappy made it to Arcade Archives. These are the games I want the most to be ported to Arcade Archives, along with Mappy Arrangement. As far as my thoughts on the original Mappy goes, in my opinion, Mappy is a really amazing game and it's honestly my all-time favorite game. The gameplay is really fun and engaging, has great and catchy soundtrack, colorful and appealing graphics for its time, and it controls great. Certainly the most fun I have over other Arcade games to me, even over popular ones like Pacman and Dig Dug in my opinion. That's why it's really strange to me that Mappy isn't often talked about in the gaming community. Mappy seriously needs more love for sure. It's a great classic that should not be sleep on and it's overall worth checking out.
@KingMike I honestly don't understand the hate. I mean to each their own, but I heavily disagree with the opinion of that streamer. Mappy is a really great classic. It's a lot of fun, great gameplay and tight controls. What more can you ask for in a quality Arcade title. Mappy is honestly really underrated and deserves more love in the gaming community if you ask me.
