Pros:
-It's fun
-Feels fine at 30fps
-The team mechanic adds an interesting twist
-Great soundtrack
-Funny character banter
-Lots to unlock
Cons:
-Clumsy UI feels like it could have used more work
-Story mode has some funny dialogue, but the whole thing feels phoned-in
-Tracks are pretty, but--except for a couple of standout obstacle ideas-- they all feel the same
-It should never be such a bother to see which item you just picked up. If there's one particular detail where MK8 just decimates TSR, (besides number of courses), this is it.
Overall, I think NL's review is pretty much on-target. I like TSR, I'm glad I bought it, and the team angle makes it a unique experience to return to every now and then. But once Crash Team Racing is released, Sonic's going to fall into the phantom zone which is the "more" section of my Switch downloads.
Sega, all you have to do is make a GREAT AAA Sonic game! Seriously, that's ALL YOU HAVE TO DO! Don't rush it and don't base it on a gimmick no one wants! Ask Nintendo to help you! Please! We're all rooting for you!
@Gerbwmu: Don't worry about the 6%. They'll never be happy and will always complain. Just forget 'em, move on and, come December, enjoy one of the greatest games ever made!
@JayJ: This is a fantastic, enthralling game, but "artsy" does indeed describe it perfectly. It's like interactive art: Very challenging interactive art--almost like playing through an abstract segment from a new Fantasia sequel. It's one of my favorite recent games, but watch some play-throughs to decide if it's for you: What you see and hear is what you get.
Already paid for and pre-loaded DK Tropical Freeze. Can't wait to start playing. Never owned it on Wii U, so this is a must-buy for me. Full price, no problem for a game of this quality. Digital all the way!!!
@LegenofPokemon: If you supported Wii U, you DESERVE to be able to buy DKTF at 2/3 off. Even though I could have bought the Wii U version, the portability, graphics bump and difficulty options make this worthwhile for me on Switch at full price.
Buying Detective Pikachu from the eShop. Can't wait to try this one. It's my goal to never buy a physical copy of a game ever again, unless there's no other option (Labo).
Also looking forward to the Blastoise DLC.
@Tandy255: Whatever they're replacing VC with will be nice, but I really think most fans just want as many new AAA 1st party Nintendo games as possible.
All-digital is the future, and I'm fine with that. They're games. Old ones get replaced by newer/better versions. I have no need to "collect" objects, especially when the "art" was all-digital to begin with. It's not like we're losing the original canvas the Mona Lisa was painted on. The convenience of carrying my entire library with me and NEVER having to swap cartridges is the key. I've only bought one Switch cart (BotW) and the rest of my 24+ games are all digital. I've enjoyed them, they're there if I want them, and if I lose them the worst that could happen is I have to r e-buy the 2 or 3 I'm still interested in. Or not. If the originals aren't available, there'll probably be something better in its place. The world won't end. They're games. Any possible loss of a particular title I'd probably never touch again anyway is all worth it for the convenience and lack of junk and clutter.
I love it when people claim they'll stop playing games when things go all-digital. No, they won't. It's like all the Disney fans who claimed they'd "lie in front of the bulldozers" if Frozen replaced the Maelstrom ride at EPCOT. Frozen happened, and there was a distinct lack of fans lying in front of bulldozers.
Gotta say...I really am enjoying this game, though any improvement through patching would of course be welcome. On another note, I'm surprised so many people are insisting they want the cartridge version, since the SD card required download for that version is nearly as massive as the full eshop download anyway.
Buying this Day 1; Looks like a lot of fun, I like the character designs, and it'll be a great portable fighter to supplement ARMS while waiting a year or so for the next Smash to arrive.
@Fuz: Totally agree. Plus, this version's portable. Switch wins. Definitely buying this on the eShop unless certain game reviewers I trust say there's still some big problems with the actual gameplay.
@GameOtaku: The Videogame crash of the 80's happened because the Atari 2600 could only do so much and people quickly tired of the simple, repetitive gameplay from all developers including Atari themselves. ET was just the death blow; nothing could have saved that situation. The fad ran its course. Gaming had to wait for hardware that could support more interesting play.
Today's Indy scene is much more encouraging than that. You say 7 out of 10 are junk-- Well, that easily goes for all software releases for any platform. At least 7 out of 10 everythings in the world are junk. The Switch has had an unusually great first year so far, but, as with all consoles, it'll reach the point where more junk is released than good games, even by major third party companies.
All I can say is the Indy game Fast RMX is one of the Switch's very best games, and one of the most fun racers I've ever played. Like you, I'd pick a great AAA game over a handful of Indies any day... but it's great to have the choice and the variety there. It's nice to pick up a smaller little gem between those big first party releases.
Bought and downloaded WWE. Having a good time with it. I've only played 1 vs 1 matches so far, and in those the frame rate is ok and perfectly playable. The game loads like a tank in molasses, but I was expecting that. For a portable wrestling game with a full-featured character creator, I''m glad I bought it. I do have to join the chorus from other versions, however, in saying the Loot Crate system--even though it's free--is pointless and really hurts the overall experience. Wouldn't say no to future patches.
@N8tiveT3ch: But Odyssey, Splatoon 2, and BotW show that Switch can be a console with the year's best games. The games just have to be built with the Switch's capabilities in mind from the get-go in order to really shine. Personally, I don't even own a TV just now and so only use Switch as a handheld, and I really do think Switch is the beginning of the end for traditional console bricks. I think soon we'll be seeing consoles from all companies following Nintendo's lead: they'll be handhelds that can stream to a TV. And they'll keep getting lighter and more powerful (the Switch line, too) while hovering around the $300 price range.
@MadJay1664: Who cares about download size? Anyone with slower internet or an SD card smaller than 128. Even though I bought a 256 card, I still keep track of what's left, since I buy everything digitally. First games to get deleted eventually will be Just Dance 2017 and One Two Switch (neither or which are worth their insanely large file sizes).
@Vandyfan: It's your internet. I downloaded the whole thing (it's a huge download) in less than 2 hours. And regarding availability; Nintendo did not develop this game. Don't blame them for things that aren't their fault.
Just bought it on the eShop. It turned out to be just a 20 gig download; not as massive as I feared. Bought the $5 unlock-everyone DLC; worked fine (Note: You have to activate the unlock option in the character select screen).
The game plays...okay... To the developer's credit, it really looks like they tried to cram everything onto the Switch. Character creator seems full-featured. Personally, I'd have gladly given up less detail in the crowds and stadiums in exchange for a bit more character detail (although what's there is fine), but this is not a train wreck. It's running... it hasn't crashed yet... It's a full featured WWE game I can take anywhere. So far, I'm happy with the purchase.
