I would give it a 9! Wonderboy 2 should not be a point behind this title. This is one of my favorite RPGs. Perhaps, only bested by Phantasy Star IV.
The only major flaw I see is the last dungeon has the last Boss at such an insane place you probaly would only find him out of sheer luck or by going to a map of it on a fan site.
This game can seem intimating to a novice like a baseball bat with nails in it, but if you keep at it you will find this to be one of the most satisfying games on the VC.
I think an 8 is too high for this game. I would give it a 5. It will entertain mildly for a week than you will forget you own the game. The game hasn't aged that well and plenty of the gameplay is very flawed and rough.
Part of me agrees with the review as it drags a bit with some of the wolf side quests and its more of an upgrade than a revolution, but part of me wants it to get a 9 because I think its highs are still higher than OoT's highs. TP had the best boss battles and dungeons of any Zelda game. Plus, I think the most intense Zelda experience is the Cave of Ordeals in this game.
Yes, it reached that prestigious club that only games like Operation Wolf and Donkey Kong Jr Math have ever made it to. Those special titles that somehow manage to do everything wrong perfectly! That's some feat.
I sometimes think documentaries have slants, but some of the things Billy Mitchell said seemed pretty insecure. I want Billy Mitchell to start doing more live appearances. Until then, Steve will always be champ in my book.
I just downloaded this game about 4 days ago. I'm surprised it took me so long to get this one. The game is unique. It grows on you too. At first, I was like these controls are slightly non-intuitve, but you get the hang of it. So I say dowload this classic and play it a few times before you pass judgement on it.
Yea,the economy is at the bottom of the Grand Canyon now, so I'm not surprised by this decision at all. People love it and it has to be cheap to produce.
All of the big video game companies are doing the exact same thing for their systems too. Sony has it the worst with the cost of the PS3. It's expensive to make and sell.

Re: Review: Defender (GameCube)
You like Defender 2000 for the Jaguar?
Re: Review: Defender (GameCube)
I like this Cube game too. Quality review!
Isn't Defender, like your favoerite game Sean?
Re: Review: Phantasy Star (Virtual Console / Master System)
Can somebody tell me which 8bit RPG is better than this? Dragon Quest 3?
Re: Review: Yoshi's Island DS (DS)
Probably, the best "to the point" conclusion ever!
Re: Review: Pilotwings (Virtual Console / Super Nintendo)
Is this one of those games where it's impossible to land?
Re: Review: Pilotwings (Virtual Console / Super Nintendo)
Super Metroid came out in 1994!
Re: Review: Pilotwings (Virtual Console / Super Nintendo)
If I remember right, Pilot Wings, F-Zero, Sim City, and of course Super Mario World were the launch titles for the SNES -- a killer lineup.
Re: Wii to Retail for £200 in the UK
What's the jobless rate in the UK?
Re: Japan Gets 20 More Namco Arcade Games
@Chicken Brutus
Namco W. Bush pulled some strings for the wealthiest 1% Americans to get the 20 games for free, for the rest of us, we get nothing.
Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Game Boy)
Is the color version better?
Re: Review: Phantasy Star (Virtual Console / Master System)
@Adamant If I remember right he was on a normal wall.

Re: Review: Flipnote Studio (DSiWare)
For an awesome, free software, I think this deserves a 10. This has been a hit on NL Forum like nothing elese I've seen.
Re: New Metroid Prime Trilogy Artwork
That is a good looking cover!
Re: Nintendo Sales Drop as Global Economy Goes Down the Crapper
Will Work For Video Games!
Re: Nintendo Download: 28-29 July 2009 (Japan)
The arcade version of NG is so much better than the NES versions.
Re: Review: Neutopia II (Virtual Console / TurboGrafx-16)
I didn't like this game as much as the first Neutopia. Just didn't have the same magic factor.
Re: Review: Boulder Dash (Virtual Console / Commodore 64)
This game can seem intimating to a novice like a baseball bat with nails in it, but if you keep at it you will find this to be one of the most satisfying games on the VC.
Re: Super Mario Galaxy Shines in 720p
I love Nintendo, but they sometimes make the worst decisions.
Re: Review: Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)
This is way better than the first Punch Out. I can't find any major flaws with it.
Re: New Wii Zelda Won't Be Radically Different, Says Miyamoto
Hey .... I'm thankful it's not using the Wii Balance Board.
Re: Rampage
I have never played the NES version of this classic game, but I don't like the fact that the wolf character is missing.
Re: Review: Fantasy Zone II (Virtual Console / Master System)
So is Fantasy Zone 2 better than Fantasy Zone the Maze?

Re: Dungeon Explorer
King Natas is not that subtle of a name. You don't need an ace Scrabble player or the Church Lady from SNL to figure out what it really means.
Re: Review: Waterworld (Virtual Boy)
Ironically, I actually like the movie.
Re: Review: Waterworld (Virtual Boy)
Yes, it reached that prestigious club that only games like Operation Wolf and Donkey Kong Jr Math have ever made it to. Those special titles that somehow manage to do everything wrong perfectly! That's some feat.
Re: Shia LaBeouf Disses the Wii
News Flash Mutt Williams! You ruin every movie you are in!! I hope Spielberg adds your face in the next Boom Blox game!!!
Re: Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance
Thanks for the update Jhuhn! I knew it had to be coming sooner or later...
Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
I would say this is the overall best Zelda. Twilight Princess had higher highs, but this is more consistent and it never drags.
Re: Reggie Wants Your Dream Nintendo Franchise/Developer Pairings
I would love to see Nintendo take a stab at Sonic the Hedgehog and Castlevania. Two classic series that have felt a bit dull as of late.
Re: Miyamoto: You Need A Controller For True Immersion
Wasn't Little Big Planet supposed to be a big seller too?
Re: Review: Dr. Mario Express (DSiWare)
I never really felt Dr. Mario was ever as good as Tetris or even Columns.
Re: Miyamoto: You Need A Controller For True Immersion
It should be interesting to see if Project Natal will be a retail hit or a bomb.
Re: Review: Mario Clock (DSiWare)
This game makes wish they would make a DSi download game with alternate levels to the orginal SMB with the same classic look and moves.
Re: Review: Mario Clock (DSiWare)
This is still one the best "4's" out there! The price is right. It's almost worth it just to see a POW block in the classic game.
Re: Mario Clock
It's worth downloading for 200 points! It gives you somewhat fun / short Mario experience. It's probably best played waiting.
Re: R-Type Boss Molded in Plastic
That's does look pretty awesome! Like the Death Star, the weak spot was very exposed.
Re: Review: Asphalt 4: Elite Racing (DSiWare)
Finally, a download game that doesn't look like a download game!
Re: Stride Gum Offers Steve Wiebe Consolation Prize

Re: Review: Super Smash Bros. (Virtual Console / Nintendo 64)
I would give this an 8 also. The other games improved the formula, but this was still a trendsetter and is one of the most memorable N64 titles.
Re: Super Smash Bros.
I remember buying this game the day it came out 10 years ago.
Re: Ristar

Re: Phantasy Star IV
I just downloaded this a week ago and I'm amazed! It is very true to the first Phantasy Star on the SMS.
Re: Review: Art Style: KUBOS (DSiWare)
Apparently, the folks at Art Style want all of my money.
Re: New Nintendo Handheld Dropped Amid DS Success
Time to milk the DS for all it's got!

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii E3 Trailer
As much as I love Mario Galaxy, you just can't beat the playabilty of the classic Mario 2D format. I'm sure I will get this for Christmas.
Re: Sin & Punishment 2 E3 Trailer
Talk about more hard core than Metroid: Other M.
Re: E3: New Wii Mario Game In The Works?
I want New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the DS to come out!
