I would have put Crystal Version ahead of Gold and Silver because of how much more depth Crystal has. Day and nite cycles were so cool as a kid, seasonal Pokémon, mystery gifts, new Pokémon types. First game I put several hundred hours into as a kid.. ah memories
I’m about to turn 30 this month. I’ve played Red, Yellow, Ruby, Sapphire, Leaf Green, Fire Red, Crystal, and Let’s Go Pikachu.
My suggestion is a simple one.. don’t worry about anything past Fire Red/Leaf Green.
I agree, after the 300 Pokémon of Kanto and Johto regions, it’s overwhelming. I can’t remember more than a few from Ruby/Sapphire but they were great fun.
If you’re fresh to the series but don’t want to start with the 8 but Gameboy Color games or have your eyes bleed from the new games, Let’s Go Pikachu us a great game.
All the basics from the Original story, super easy to remember where things are if you’ve played through 1000 times like I have but the new Animations are amazing. Super easy to play. Just the basics, but you can tell our SJW… friends… got their hands on the game. Much more for kids without gambling games and fighting wild Pokémon isn’t a thing anymore.

Re: Saber's Wild Card Football Brings Power-Ups, NFL Stars And Arcade Action To Switch This October
Dude hasn’t played football since 2015 but still keeps showing up in Madden and now on the front cover of this? No thanks.
Video games are suppose to bring us together… this seems like a very calculated move. A poorly calculated move.
