Re: Metal Slug 3

Steviis_Father

If you can find Metal Slug Anthology for cheap (bargain bin, eBay, thru a friend, etc.) that collection has this game and all the others. Great deal!

Re: Chronos Twins

Steviis_Father

Is this game exactly the same as the US DSiWare release? Do any of the DS versions (not Wii) have any differences?

Re: Three Turbografx-16 Games Dropped from VC

Steviis_Father

And so it begins...

I will seriously shed a tear once Rondo of Blood gets pulled from the VC lineup.
Seems like only yesterday that such wonderful games were being offered on the service. I pity anyone who might have wanted to play these games, but missed an opportunity to buy them.

I recently picked up MUSHA Aleste (MD) on the VC, just for my own peace to know I have this wonderful game (albeit expensive in physical form). I also was happy to have picked up Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES), Gunstar Heroes (MD), Battle Load Runner (PCE) & Lords of Thunder (PCE SCD).

As we approach the Wii U launch later this year, I urge EVERYONE to scan the VC library (alongside the very, very helpful nintendolife VC reviews section) and pickup all the games you always wanted to get, but passed on to do on a later date. While classic VC games begin to disappear, you never know if WiiPoints cards may begin to become harder to find in stores...

Re: Review: 3D Classics: TwinBee (3DSWare)

Steviis_Father

Great game! Music in this particular TwinBee (NES) offers some of the better offerings - if not the best in the series - with a perfect mix of upbeat tunes to match the hectic gameplay, as well as particularly melodic anthems to get your head bopping along. The sprite work here, though simplistic to the later games in the franchise, is still very well designed. The palette doesn't become too "cotton-candylike" to the point of being overly childish, and the variety of bell-power ups gives it as much depth as its side-scrolling cousins, Gradius & Life Force/Salamander. In fact, much like how Super Mario Bros. still plays well when compared to SMB 2 & 3, this NES port of the arcade original offers many of the series' distinct staples, so much so that it's easy to see this game on many "Top Games of All Time" lists, simply because of how well it holds up. Hope a whole new generation gives it a try, because it's a wonderful little game with a lot to offer.

Re: Capcom Refused Inafune's MML3 Contract Proposal

Steviis_Father

If Satoru Iwata is listening... I say Nintendo should hire him.

Then create a new character & game called Nama Gem (Mega Man backwards) about a similar character, who uses the weapons of bosses to advance. He gets instant support from Nintendo failthful. He gets an automatic inclusion in Smash Bros & Mario Kart games to come. And Inafune still gets to draw, create & envision a character. He can even be blue-colored.

We all win. Except Capcom.

Make it happen Iwata-San! The world is in your hands.

Re: First Impressions: DOT MAN

Steviis_Father

Oh my god! It's basically an update* on Dodge 'Em, one of my all-time favorite ATARI 2600 games!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4OYMGUGeA0

It was simplistic, yes, but so was Kaboom!, and other twitch games of the era. That's what made these games so addicting.

*except now you can make u-turns, which is pretty cool. But if this plays like Dodge 'Em, this game is a great game! In fact, Super Mario Kart (SNES) had a multiplayer stage that mimic'd the original Dodge 'Em set up of 4 quadrants with lane shifts between them.

Again, if it plays anything like Dodge 'Em, and feels like a spiritual successor, this should be good.

Re: Gargoyle's Quest

Steviis_Father

This is an incredible game! I just finished it this year, with my original cart, and it's an awesomely satisfying adventure. It's a lot like Bionic Commando, Blaster Master & Metroid in the sense that you feel incredibly weak and stunted at the beginning, but stick with it; as you progress the game opens up with it's RPG elements & great platforming bits, too. Mastering the "delayed flutter" & ways to extend your jump really helps make you feel like a master by the end of the game. Plus you stick it to Lucifer, which is cool, too.

Re: 3D Classics: Xevious

Steviis_Father

The IGN review is a good one that takes into account the 30-years, whilst praising this new update on its own improved merit. Read it & decide for yourself, while we wait for Nintendolife to review the game...

Re: 3D Classics: Xevious

Steviis_Father

There was a review made by Nintendolife's Darren Calvert (back in 2007 for the VC release), and it's pretty in-depth on the game's strengths & (albeit, despite its more abundant) weaknesses. Having had so many shooters come out after it doesn't help it age any better.

http://vc.nintendolife.com/reviews/2007/01/xevious_virtual_console

Still, though this 3D update will be adding a little more visual "pizazz" to the already dated Solvalou adventure (with the bomb-dropping & environments below your ship undoubtedly popping up impressively), I can't help thinking that a game like Twinbee (which shares bomb-dropping anyway) would be better served in 3D than Xevious.

What do you guys think?

Re: Review: Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure (Virtual Console / TurboGrafx-16)

Steviis_Father

I own both Bonk 1 & 2 on Turbografx-16, and while I own a PC-Engine, I was really bent on saving up (a lot) to afford a Turbochip version of Bonk 3 to add to my collection.

But perhaps some of you can help me. As I said I have a PC-Engine as well, so I can instead buy PC Genjin 3 (the JAP version of the game, which contains minor differences like a more feminine persona as one of bonk's transformations), however, given that I don't read Japanese and own the other two Bonks in English, is there much story to be had that makes the US version worth spending for? Or would you guys recommend picking up PC Genjin 3, coz it's just as playable and there aren't any story elements I'll need to understand to play the game?

*The Virtual Console version is the 3rd choice in the decision, in case I decide against getting the US Turbochip, US CD, or JAP Hucard version.

Any recommendations and help would be appreciated.

Re: Review: Brawl Brothers (Virtual Console / Super Nintendo)

Steviis_Father

Oh Wow! This game was awesome! I used to play this game with my cousin every weekend at his house. We cycled through each character, but we both knew we wanted to be Kazan (high-tops and all...)

@Tasuki: That's correct, there is a code! I remember learning it different ways, but it generally goes like this (at least with me): Quickly press buttons B, A, X, Y repeatedly at the JALECO screen until the screen becomes scrambled. Then press Start after a hearing a slashing noise. Then press Down(3), & you'll have a grabled screen flash onscreen. Don't panic. Just press Start. Exit the options screen to view the title screen from the Japanese version - Rushing Beat: Ran.

This game was the version my cousin & I played when we were younger, but it's pretty much the same game. The only difference is that Kazan has an alternate uppercut animation when you press Y. But I now have Brawl Brothers on a SNES cart & decided to forego my Super Famicom (JAP) copy, since this code was so awesome to have given me 2 GAMES on 1 CART! Hahahaha!

It's a great game. A lot like a burnt homemade toast pizza.
It's hard. Imperfect around the edges. A little cheesy.
But great!

Re: Feature: Retro Duo Console Review

Steviis_Father

This review made a believer out of me, but I think it needs to be said that one problem with the system that is often overlooked is that since it uses SNES gamepad ports, it doesn't support the NES Zapper, so Wild Gunman & DuckHunt automatically become unplayable. Stone Age Gamer had this in its description:

"The Retro Duo console uses Super Nintendo compatible controllers and devices such as the Super Scope, but cannot use Nintendo compatible controllers and devices such as the NES Zapper peripheral for Duck Hunt. The Super Nintendo controller buttons otherwise map to the NES controller inputs."

Does the Super Scope work with these games being played on a Retro Duo? If to play these games, is the original NES still the better option?

Re: Silent Debuggers

Steviis_Father

@16 - Darnit. On my last trip to Japan (before the above comment was made), I purchased a copy of the game, thinking it played in English. I just got back and tried it to my dismay. It does not play in English.
Thanks anyway, Banana_Jane.

Re: Silent Debuggers

Steviis_Father

Was the original PC-Engine version completely in English? There seems to be no authority on the net that says otherwise. The Katakana is under the title, but did the JAP PC-Engine do an all-English story? (i.e. import-friendly?) Will someone please shed some light on this matter.

Re: 3DS To Get Revamped Online Shop

Steviis_Father

Anyone feel as if nintendo ought to focus on improving their existing online store service first instead of simply promising that their next one will be great? kind of a let down honestly. Who here wants them to send an update patch to just redesign the whole infrastructure of the shop and just have everything work better as they say the next one will? Apple does it all the time with iTunes...

Re: Review: Dive: The Medes Islands Secret (WiiWare)

Steviis_Father

On the Aquaria parallel, even if I feel Aquaria is a much deeper story-driven game, I think they have a lot in common that just "taking place under water." The game is played on a 2D plane, like Ecco, and it involves a lot more backtracking through stages to unlock more goodies. This makes it more Metroid, which in turn draws another Aquaria correlation. The game may not be as deep, but it's a great attempt to do what Aquaria isn't doing yet on the Wii. I have Aquaria on my Mac, but this game offers a less alien environment that the average WiiWare store browser may enjoy. I say pick it up, because 2D underwater, story-driven games that involve exploration and pull it all in together this well aren't very common. A good way to spend 1000 points I say.

Here's a video that gives a good taste of how the game plays.

Re: Cratermaze

I shed a tear for Doraemon. Hahaha! Oh well...
Who knows? Perhaps if they had left him in, a cartoon phenomenon might have sparked in the US.

I mean, look at Pokémon - the franchise began as a game, but a cartoon followed. Alternate reality.
