Re: Mega Turrican

President_Leever

I want to give this game a 5 because it's got excellent production values and it's a blast to play, but it's just a little too short and easy to warrant a top score (made it to the end level on my first try and I don't consider myself good at these games). Still a must if you havent played it.

Re: F-Zero X

President_Leever

Just played this game for a bit with a buddy. It's rather ugly and plain looking, the theme is really cheesy (like in a westling game almost) and the sense of speed isn't that great, though it is increased by some decent level designs. So overall it's a minor disappointment for me.

Re: Super Fantasy Zone

President_Leever

The sequel to Fantasy Zone is Fantasy Zone 2: Tears of Opa Opa, also released for the SMS in 1987. This game is from 1992
And it's awesome btw.

Re: Gley Lancer

President_Leever

I agree that it's not as fantastic as some people seem to think, but still among the top 10 shooters on MD. Eliminate Down, Thunder Force 3-4, Gaiares and Battle Mania 2 are all better.. Still, this probably is a must own for hardcore shooter fans.

Re: Super R-Type

President_Leever

lol @ that start up sequence, who decided a crane would be the best way to exit the base? This game has a lot of slowdown and as the review states the lack of checkpoints makes it really frustrating. I actually like the original better..

Re: Fantasy Zone

President_Leever

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about the TG16 version. It's very good, almost on par with the arcade original. They all crap on the NES version though.

Re: Blazing Lazers

President_Leever

This isn't related to the Soldier series, it's a "side-story" to the Aleste series and it's made by Compile. It's a great, intense game but I prefer the Aleste games that came after it because they have more eye candy and are more forgiving.

Re: Fantasy Zone

President_Leever

Yay! One of my fav SMS games. Love the surreal atmosphere (why did Sega abandon this kind of style?) and innovative gameplay. The sequels improved some things but the soundtrack still holds up well and is among the best on the system.

Showing the entire game in a preview video was a Bad move btw

Re: Metroid

President_Leever

The ugly duckling of the Metroid series. It hasn't aged too well but it has it's place in gaming history. I love Super Metroid though, and managed to enjoy the less impressive Metroid II for GB as well, even though it lacked a map and the environments were even more repetititve than in the NES game.

Re: Operation Wolf

President_Leever

I remember playing this a lot on PC back in the day. It was one of the few games in the school's "hobby" room. Never liked it much though.

Re: Columns III: Revenge of Columns

President_Leever

"The once simple gameplay is complicated with the use of Magic jewels which can remove all colours from your well or raise your opponents crush bar. In addition to this there are also Magic jewels which cause disruption to your opponent when destroyed. It can flip their controls, disable their shuffling or turn their jewels black and white so matches are more difficult to perform."

These are all positives, seeing as the original game got extremely boring in just a short while and was little more than a Tetris ripoff. You guys need to try this out in it's full multiplayer glory, then write a new, enlightened review where you praise the game in interesting new ways. There's nothing wrong with gearing a game towards multiiplayer, especially not in a genre that was made for it.

Re: Landstalker

President_Leever

Now that I've beaten it, I can safely say that this is one of the top choices for spending your Wii points on. Excellent treasure seeking adventure game with a great sense of humour, challenging puzzles and a nice amount of sidequests.

My only nitpick is the somewhat shoddy control. The lack of shadows is unforgivable (it takes a long time to get used to the platforming without them), and the hit detection can be annoying. You'll often end up hitting the terrain intead of the enemy with your sword when trying to fight in narrow areas.
Highly recommended, one of the MDs best.

@Anthony, you can save in the churches.

Re: Vectorman

President_Leever

The definition of generic action platformer #47.. I can honestly say I loathe this game and its lame, green peace inspired player character.

Re: Space Harrier II

President_Leever

Whoa, harsh score. This game is actually pretty fun and the gfx have that drug induced charm of early Sega games (fantasy zone era) . The original arcade game is way better though.

Re: Streets of Rage 3

President_Leever

Butchered soundtrack, worse characters, ugly palettes and dull pacing. SOR3 was a pretty big disappointment for me. The only positive thing I can say about it is that the battle system was a decent improvement over SOR2.

In short, don't get it unless you're really starved for another beat 'em up game.

Re: Ristar

President_Leever

"It's really nothing spectacular. Worth checking out as it is a solid platformer but it's no Sonic CD."

Funny you should mention Sonic CD, which is the worst offender when it comes to choking up the gameplay with odd level design (Im looking at you, crappy timetraveling system).

Re: Comix Zone

President_Leever

Quite an interesting take on the beat em up genre, but still.. it's cheesy, repetitive and too short. I probably would've liked it better had it included a 2-player mode.

Re: Alien Soldier

President_Leever

King Pie said it well, Ill just add that the learning curve could've been a tad smoother. This game keeps you on your toes from the get-go.

Re: Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

President_Leever

DKC also had a 1-hit-KO system, it's no big deal. Especially when you have items like the fire armlet.

I wish Sega and others would come back to these games and offer patches that fix the most obvious problems with them.
