@LastFootnote may i ask where you found a brand new ps4 at that price? i hope that wasn't ebay or amazon 3rd party prices haha. naw, the MSRP of the ps4 slim was $299USD in 2016. the price went as low as $199USD a few years later. that's old tech by today's standards... the switch 2 is competing with 2013 performance standards but will have the price tag of a ps5... well, if you think that makes sense, all the power to you
@LastFootnote the screen is $50 and the speakers are $20 at best. the guts of the switch 2 is going to be equivalent to a base ps4. let's put this into context: the base ps4 is roughly 5X less powerful than the ps5 (by measure of TFLOPS), meaning, the switch 2 will be roughly 5X less powerful than the base ps5, yet will be retailing at a similar price point in many countries. let that sink in. it doesn't make sense and if one views the hardware objectively, the switch 2 will be grossly overpriced at $400USD.
nintendo really needs to evaluate the currencies around the world. $400USD is equivalent to the $580CAD ps5 slim (digital) here in canada. isn't that an absurd thought that the switch 2 will be priced alongside the ps5? anything more than $300-350USD is going to be a tough sell for everyone but the most hardcore enthusiasts and we all know that the majority of switch users are casuals. i'll sit this launch period out. sales will likely slump after year 1 and nintendo will have no choice but to drop the price. hopefully this is a 3DS sort of situation and they course correct when they realize they overvalued their product.
@MurasakiTakeshi that would be great. but tv out needs to be the #1 priority, or else it is technically not a switch haha. in the meantime, you can check out the "super5oled" mod. its a switch lite mod that allows you to swap out the LCD screen for an OLED — there is a version with tv out as well. it will run you about $100USD which is reasonable. good for people who like to tinker
seems like nintendo's quality control is slipping with all the outsourcing it's been doing lately. the good old nintendo polish appears to be something we can't always rely on when unproven 3rd parties are involved.
sorry, but does this analyst know what he is talking about? the launch price of the switch 2 will be the FINAL price of the switch 2. the MSRP of the original switch literally never dropped after 7 years. so, no, the price will matter going forward. i don't know how these "anaysts" get their jobs by providing uneducated and outright misinformation
but, yes, $400USD/$550CAD seems very likely. nintendo is not going to do us any favours here. i would consider holding out a couple years for a switch 2 lite if it actually does video out this time. for the love of god...
maybe retro studios staff simply didn't want their names on this lackluster, barebones remaster? we all know they would have poured their heart into it if they were on the project.
@Antraxx777 it's a novelty feature and completely unnecessary. put it this way: if switch 2 didn't have joycons and the hardware was one piece, but in exchange you got a proper d-pad and nintendo shaved off $50 from the MSRP, i don't think many people would complain. also, that doesn't mean there couldn't be optional joycon accessories released for it for people such as yourself (they wouldn't physically connect to the base unit but could be used independently). i'm sure nintendo has the data and i'd be surprised if even 20% of users would use the joycons detached. when the system is docked, people are far more likely to use a proper controller for comfort. but for marketing reasons and the switch 2 being an evolution of the what came before it, not to mention backwards compatibility reasons, i suppose nintendo felt it was better to go this route.
i wonder which switch games won't be compatible? how well will backwards compatbility be implemented?. also, no d-pad was an awful choice back in 2017 and its an awful choice in 2025. might as well save costs and forget about removeable joycons... most people don't like that aspect of the console anyways. yet here we are... might wait for switch 2 lite so long as it actually has TV output but knowing nintendo...
for a company that pretends to be all about "fun", nintendo sure does enjoy sucking all the fun out of community projects. i think we all know by now that internally, this isn't a "fun" company at all and it is more concerned about throwing people in prison for emulating 30 year old, often forgotten and commercially unnavailable roms. nintendo could take a few lessons from sega and be more friendly with its fans when it makes sense to do so.
@Kilroy i see your point, although i'd argue its not an even comparison since the original castlevania reboot, lords of Shadow (2010) was a very solid game and the breakout title of the studio. of course, kojima productions was also involved in its development and that likely went a long way to ensuring its quality. mercury steam showed a lot of promise and needed some direction i suppose.
forever entertainment's work on the other hand has been so uninspired and by the numbers in my opinion (front mission and dragoon remakes). lacking in polish and spirit is probably the best way to describe their work. in either case, we all know nintendo's level of quality control goes above and beyond in most cases and they won't let this remaster get released unless it is meets their standards (hopefully). there is potential for forever entertainment to grow and improve, it's just that nintendo doesn't usually rely on unproven developers with its first party IP so it is quite an unusual circumstance.
i'm a fan of the 2d metroid games but have yet to get into the prime series. first impression of prime 4 is that it looks flat and lifeless (opening area). it really does look like a remastered 3ds game which is disappointing after such a long wait. hopefully this was a watered down port of the switch 2 release? in either case, gameplay is king, but first impressions were not so good for those viewing this game objectively, seperated from the hype. nintendo's stellar art direction with mario and zelda on the switch really does make up for the hardware limitations in ways that sometimes gets overlooked.
forever entertainment does not have a good track record. their work has been passable at best. very surprising that nintendo would put them in charge of such a great game that is deserving of a perfect remaster.

@armondo36 the ps4 pro power rumours are being debunked. we can't say for certain, but its very unlikely. more like a base ps4? yes.
