@grupvilla that's because the 3DS users have a massive library of excellent games to choose from, whereas the Switch users have only a handful of those games (not even that) and a ton of crappy indies, that's why every descent Switch game sells well , let's face it, they're not that many. Plus the 3DS is much more than just pokemon. Saying that the Switch is the 3ds successor is like saying that a suitcase is the successor to the backpack. And you know, that's not the case...
Look at the results...Almost 50-50. People still love, buy and play 3DS. I know, the WiiU successor is a gorgeous console but in no way a successor to the 3DS, which has the quality, library, capability and the potential to be the "Switch lite". All the latest releases prove that fact. Sales dropped, ok that was to be expected with a new Nintendo console around, but the 3DS family still sells considerably well. People at Nintendo know better than anyone what they are doin' .
@Sanangelo89 exactly!!! Plus the New models have still great potential. All the latest releases prove clearly that the 3DS has still much to offer as a system which is different in every way than the Switch and best Switch alternative.
@RatKing64 Exactly. That Nintendo policy, of keeping the 3DS family of systems alive, is indeed clever business logic. The more kids they get hooked on Mario and the like, the better for the company and for the Switch in the long run. Furthermore, the 3DS is the perfect alternative for those who want to play Mario and the like and much much more, without having to spend 300+ bucks for that. There is no other system right now, that could fill this gap, if the 3DS ''retires''. That means more evergreen titles for the system and who knows what else. Keep them coming Nintendo!
The 3DS is an Evergreen console. It can not die. The unique mechanics, great library, the still strong sales and the overall quality of this little beast are the factors that keep a good system alive through the years.
They will bring the 3DS version eventually. They did not say ''it's cancelled'', just that it made sense to realease it in other platforms too in the West. This decision is of embarrassing business logic and of course, it's possible that it changes in the future.
@FinalFrog I could not agree more. Detective Pikachu is no.4 in the japanese charts, sold 42.000 at launch. All in all, the 3DS has stll great potential.
@SmaggTheSmug I said ''SOME Switch fanboys''. Don't change the meaning of what i said. I am not resentful at all, i love the Switch, but we can not deny the fact that the comments of SOME Switch users show arrogance and fanboyism and that's only because they bought the new thing. The fact that you can't add your brother as a friend and vice versa is an entirely different subject, irrelevant to what is being discussed here. As for the WiiU, it has never enjoyed any considerable success, whereas the 3DS family of systems still sells considerably well, although the numbers dropped because of the Switch. As i said above,in my opinion, the 3DS will be phased out when Nintendo thinks that the time has come for it to ''retire''.
@SmaggTheSmug Not true. If you check the UK 3DS software sales, week ending 24/3, you will see that Detective Pikachu is number one. So the interest is definitely there. It just sells slower on the 3DS because there are so many great games out there and the potential buyers are not in a hurry to buy that one right now. If Det.Pikachu was on the Switch it would sell much faster beacuse, let's face it...how many good games does the Switch have worth buying right now?? Just a handful and a ton of digital indies, most of them being mediocre. Most of the people you mention own both consoles and play the best games of each one, which is totally ok. But there are also those who sold their 3DS, got a Switch and hate the fact that the 3DS still gets support. And that's ill intent and malice. The whole point is that the 3DS is a great little system, which will be phased out when Nintendo thinks that the time has come for it to ''retire'' and not because of the wishful thinking of some Switch fanboys.
@SmaggTheSmug It's not like that. It's like Renault Clio and Renault Megane. A Reanult Clio IV is the successor to the Renault Clio II. But the Switch is clearly NOT the 3DS successor. The Snickers example is totally right.
@TheGameTutor well, go ahead and buy it!! It's 3DS at it's best. Don't suppress yourself. Enjoy the game on your 3ds while you wait for the big switch games to arrive. This is what a wise gamer would do.
Come on guys...most of the comments are a rhapsody of hate for the 3DS. What did you expect, that everyone runs like crazy to buy the Detective Pikachu game?? Of course not!!! The 3DS has a library full of amazing games, the variety is big, it's not like the Switch, which has only a few good games and everyone runs to buy those. Detective Pikachu will sell well. But it will take some time for the number of sold copies to increase. It's that simple. And Nintendo knows that fact.
It might be a cool feature, but the strength os the 3DS has always been it's games. After all the service stays, the StreetPass Relay service will not affect normal StreetPass operations between Nintendo 3DS systems. It will not affect StreetPass Mii Plaza or any other software on Nintendo 3DS. it's just the "stations" that stop. Personally, i won't miss it.
I'm not suprised at all, games like Steamworld are...tailored for the Nintendo 3DS. And for all Nintendo systems of course. As Nintendo fans we should be happy, that the 3DS and the Switch coexist so beautifuly. There is no need for a war between 3DS and Switch users.
What they say is absolutely clear : new games will keep coming (maybe not that many but there are for sure some unannounced ones) but they will focus more on the ''selects'' series of games, to ''leverage the rich library of Nintendo 3DS series titles''. After all, the Switch might be the new star, and a priority for Nintendo, but it's not the 3ds's replacement, or the cause of it's death (not yet). After all, with such a rich library, it's normal for the 3ds to...step a little aside, so that the new baby (Switch) gets the support it deserves.
