Japanese chart figures are now in for 5th November - 11th November, and the new 3DS release of Luigi's Mansion has spooked its way right to the very top.
Our favourite vacuum-wielding, green hat-wearing plumber's ghostly adventure shifted 27,370 retail units in the region last week, narrowly beating Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII's 25,740 sales. Super Mario Party is also still performing nicely, sitting in third place this week after generating another 23,333 sales.

Ha! I knew the 3DS (my favorite handheld and gaming device all together) still had some life in it!!!
Take that naysayers!
Nice!
I hope the switch keeps this up!
How many Mansions does Luigi have??
@Spoony_Tech
Technically he owns one, but I'm not sure if the other 5 from dark moon count.
Hot damn, Nintendo be killing it!
I really need to pick up the new 3DS games sometime. I only just got acquainted with Mario Sports Superstars and the Mario Parties.
Smashing momentum for the switch
There's no way Let's Go will not snag top spot next week. Eevee will be number 1, Pikachu will be number 2, if they're seperated.
Can't wait to see how well pokemon does
Nice to see the 3DS alive!
Amazing! Luigi Mansion number1
Ha even Tetris couldn't help PS4 top the Switch in Japan.
Well played, I thought the headline + subheadline were suggesting the Switch version of Luigi's Mansion was already out in Japan and leading the charts...
Why do I repeatedly fall for these click-baity headlines on NL? 🙄
But but but red or dead!!??!! The realism? The AAA? The power?
Edit: not just that, kirby is back. Apparently it was supposed to fall off a cliff after a week according to our pundits.
Did the SSBU Switch bundle release last week in Japan like it did the US? That would explain the extra 10k above it's weekly average. I had read it wasn't due out in Japan until next week but maybe some retailers broke street date?
@Frendo soul calibur definitely dead for sure. This will be the last game in the series
Looks like Mario Kart 8DX will outsell Mario Odyssey within the next 2 weeks. It should reach 2.2+ million copies sold by the end of the year, which means it will begin to outpace the sales of Mario Kart 7 when launch aligned.
@rjejr
The Smash Bros Ultimate Bundle releases on the 16th November alongside Pokemon Let's Go. The hardware boost should be very big and noticeable.
@Frendo That's what happens when it doesn't have a Switch port, the Japanese audience just doesn't have time to stay home playing their PS4 and PC all the time. A Switch port would had done Soul Calibur VI more justice.
Nice to see Western games still selling very well in Japan... 184K for a USA Themed Western - got to love it! 😎
Wii Luigi Mansion is wining the battle of the ports on a dead Nintendo systems with a mere 27K. Sure FromSoftware loves that.
The Switch gets an actual big game this week to put up on the board. Not for me, but still good news.
@westman98 Thanks. Thats the date I had read, but that was in the summer so I thought it possible they might have moved up the release. Seems weird to release SSBU and Pokemon bundles on the same day. I still think SSBU at $359 looks way better than Let's Go Pokemon for $399 if I were looking to buy a Switch. "Kids game, adult price" is not the best marketing campaign.
Anyone find it funny how SMP has outsold both RDR2 and Spider-Man, but hasn't outsold COD.
I don't think this is going to make the charts here in NA. I mean, most stores that sell DS games have about less than 10 of them stored on the lowest shelf of their Nintendo section, already filled with Switch titles.
@westman98 The way things are going it could well be the top selling Switch game. People just love Mario Kart and I don't blame them, it's that good. The so-called pundits round here didn't give it a chance but here we are. But then again next week could be very interesting after the Pokemon games come out.
Soul Caliber the franchise is pretty much done. 6 sold like crap in the west and it definitely sold like crap in japan. RIP SC, i hardly cared about ye.
The Switch outsold the rest of the market, combined, by over 100%, or over 30,000 units.
This is the biggest drubbing in a long time.
@Agramonte
Considering the global total is over 17 million, Japan accounting for 1.1% of global Red Dead sales is paltry. That’s pretty low sales for Red Dead if you ask me. Great game though, loving it so far. But the Japanese simply have different tastes than us.
@Agent721 that 17m is likely shipped numbers - and there are a lot of copies sitting on shelves. This is true sell through. And will not include digital.
But I agree with your point, even if it's 2% - Japan is a much bigger market than that.
The Switch needs more big games. I can't believe that we have no original title in the scale of Breath of the Wilds, except for ports of Diablo III, Dark Souls and maybe LA Noire. I'm talking about big action-adventure-RPG With big worlds and big stories.
I love my Nindies, The Messenger is my most played game besides BotW, but still.
I am going to have to at some point import one of those copies of Luigi's Mansion since I want to play it on a New 3DS and my New is a JP.
@Al_Godoy You don't count Xenoblade Chronicles 2? It has its problems, but if scale is what matters most to you, they don't get much bigger than that. Massive, living environments, high production values, epic story - and it even has a prequel that's bigger than many standalone games.
Every time I see splatoon 2 life time sales it blows my mind been a great success for Ninty
@Cathousemaster
Nope, it’s sold. They just had their earnings report, where they stated it had outsold Red Dead 1 in 5 days (17 million sold vs 15 million sold). Red Dead 2 has outsold COD’s recent launch and is on track to be this year’s best selling game. Take Two raised their earnings guidance for the rest of the year as a result. And what a great game it is.
I’d live to see a Red Dead 1 remaster on the Switch.
@Agent721 Seeing how the first one was 0% because they didn't even care to release it in Japan on a system with double the install base - I say These are great numbers for a western game at 7,700 Yen. RD2 is simply a phenomenon everywhere else where it is not a "niche' game.
And 4 western games doing well in a span of 6 weeks... even better. I mean an install base of somewhere south of 6 million has bought 1Million + of full price western games in such a short time is great news.
Switch outselling PS4 more that 3/1 now? OUCH!
Even with a 3DS game topping the charts.
Were they hoping for a Booette cameo?
The sales will likely be modest, but this is good news. I'm looking forward to other ports like Epic Yarn down the road. If the 3DS ends by making some of my old favorites portable (sorry, the Switch is not nearly as portable as a 3DS) and doing weird a$$ stuff like Sushi Striker, I'm totally fine with it. Sad news to everyone who smashed their 3DS with a hammer the day the Switch released, lol.
@JasmineDragon I didn't count it 'cos I haven't played it. I played both the first one and X.
However it adds to my point, I think. It shows what the machine is capable of and yet these games are in the minority, whereas you see on PS4 the catalog for this type of game is endless.
Maybe it has to do with different audiences, but i would love to fill my Switch with big adventure games.
@MysticGengar absolutely agree mate. The whole DS range has been my favourite gaming system for years. At 45 with work and family commitments it is my go to for gaming and the amount of quality games would keep me going till I died without ever touching my Switch or Xbox.
What annoys me on this site is the amount of hypocrites who say they can't touch their 3DS after playing Switch but will continue to spout the graphics don't matter bollocks.
Well at least there's some of us who just enjoy a great gaming machine.
/Rant over
@Al_Godoy Fair enough. There could definitely be a few more of them on the system.
@WiltonRoots there's a certain dude who occasionally posts here (usually with comments that he probably thinks are very witty and snarky) and in the PS sister site and has been crying about Pokémon's sales for weeks now. I can't wait for next week so I can drink his delicious tears, it'll save me a trip to Tesco to buy bottled water for a month or so
How do you like them apples, Call of Duty?
I love the 3DS and if it's still being supported decently this time next year I will be happy
That is pretty impressive.
Wait, did Call of Duty really use "IIII" instead of "IV"? Do people not know roman numerals anymore?
COD Black Ops IIII sales in Japan and on PC are amazing. Didn't think Japanese gamers and PC players would like this entry so much, considering that Black Ops IIII sales in the west on consoles are down by a decent amount compared to Black Ops 3 and WWII.
@Agent721 those numbers are shipping numbers, i.e what the publishers have sold through to retailers. Media create and famitsu track what retailers have sold through to consumers.
For publishers, it makes no difference though - they primarily sell to retailers plus any digital sales if they want to include them.
3DS is the best handheld console ever so not surprised by the success
Lol: 3DS IS DEAD, 3DS IS DEAD...or so this site usually wants us to believe...
@geordie
100% agreed there man. I feel you.
Now we can all say...
Luigi is number one.
@geordie 100% agreed!!! Raw truth!!
@gortsi You've got me intrigued, any clue who? Picking out someone crying in here is almost impossible. Also send me your friend code at some point, do a reply delete job and I'll pick it up.
@WiltonRoots he's got fajitas in his username
