I feel a 7 is appropriate. It's a great game with lots of attention to detail and a lot of fun to be had. Love the animation work. Absolutely entranced in the amazing soundtrack. Easy to learn, hard to master, just like Mario Kart had always been.
But the open world feels a bit sloppy and empty, not nearly as good as something Forza Horizon can reach. The intermission between the tracks seems like a fun idea, but gets old really fast, because driving on a straight road for 30+ seconds is just not very fun, nor does it give you many opportunities to utilize your game knowledge. The game doesn't even explain how to avoid those intermissions when picking tracks online, it's a bit obscure.
On top of that, you can't even see who picked which track online, can't change each character's name in 2P splitscreen online and honestly knockout tour is not very fun in singleplayer with all the rubberbanding. The 24 player limit seems like a generational leap, but truthfully, it just makes races extremely chaotic, in a bad way.
While I adore a lot of this game, I can't justify giving it more than a 7 in its current state, with its outrageously high physical 90 EUR price tag. It could possibly reach an 8 if enough adjustments are made through future patches.
