I have lots of games I downloaded from the Virtual Console. That is one of the best features of the Wii, the ability to download games from older systems. There are hundreds of games available, so you can't say it's a failure. I found many games I had missed out on originally due to not having any Sega systems. Yes the service isn't as robust as it once was, but thankfully Nintendo brought it back on the 3DS. Now we have a ton of classic Game Boy, Game Gear, Game Boy Color games to look forward to. And hopefully the GBA will appear as well.
WiiWare, on the other hand, is full of crap. I only have about 5 games from that service: Dr. Mario Online, Castlevania ReBirth, Cave Story, Tetris Party, Sonic 4.
I hated the 3-day time limit, so I'll pass. I never got around to finishing the game. I always got stuck at Ikana Tower (whatever it's called). The dungeons are too complicated and poorly designed.
Nintendo advertised WiiWare through their email newsletters, and not many people even use their newsletter service.
The Wii is pretty much dead. The only big games are Skyward Sword and Kirby, and after that, nothing. Modern Warfare 3 is also coming to the Wii, but that's a multiplatform game.
So unless Nintendo has a few surprises for next year, there is nothing else to look forward to. Sonic 4: Episode 2 is non-existant, there are no new Mega Man games, blah blah blah. The Wii is pretty much dead now, 3rd-party developers/publishers know this. Nintendo knows this. They aren't doing anything to change that.
Meanwhile Microsoft and Sony are enjoying increased sales and market expansion with their systems. The PS3 is growing more popular, and it's pretty much tied in sales with the 360 (here in North America). Xbox 360 got a huge boost with Kinect, and that's getting a ton of new games next year.
What does Nintendo have? Zelda and Kirby. I'm buying Skyward Sword day 1, but there isn't much else I'm looking forward to. Nintendo needs to localize The Last Story and Xenoblade, so at least we have something else to keep us occupied until the Wii U launches next year.
No exposure? Mega Man Legends 3 was one of the most well-known 3DS games out there. There were plenty of people who wanted to get a 3DS just for that game.
@ all the people who say "it's a business, businesses need to make money"...
There are hundreds of games released every year, not all of them are profitable. If every single company played it safe and stuck to proven genres, then the games industry wouldn't have evolved. Companies need to take risks at times.
Did Nintendo play it safe when they created the Wii and established the motion control phenomenon? Did Microsoft play it safe when they created Kinect, and then invested millions into promoting it? Did Nintendo play it safe when they created the cartoony style of Wind Waker?
Sonic Colors (Wii) is basically a 3D version of Sonic Rush. And the DS version is basically Sonic Rush 3.
Speaking of Sonic Rush, how can that series play so smoothly on the DS, yet Generations plays poorly on the more powerful 3DS? It is because the game uses polygons instead of sprites?
I don't have any GameCube games anymore. I would love to download a few of the classics I never completed, especially The Wind Waker. And when they put Metroid Prime 1 and 2 on the VC, they better include Wii Remote controls!
The entire VC library should be available (NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, TG16, Master System, etc.). Nintendo isn't going to drop their own systems like that. That would be too much money lost.
This this this! You hit the nail on the head. Though I would argue that Halo is more popular than most of Sony's 1st-party games (aside from Uncharted). Halo is Microsoft's bread-and-butter franchise. They won't ever let it die. Quality-wise, Sony's 1st-party studios wipe the floor with Microsoft's any day.
And between Sony and Nintendo, I'd say it's about a tie. Though Sony does take more risks and tries to branch out into new genres (ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet, the PixelJunk games, Flower, etc.). This is something Nintendo really needs to work on.
If JRPGs don't sell, tell that to Square-Enix, Atlus, and XSEED.
Square-Enix's entire business is RPGs. If RPGs didn't sell, SE would have been dead years ago.
Same goes for Atlus. Atlus takes risks to localize obscure JRPGs that other publishers wouldn't touch. If the genre was stagnating, Atlus would have quit or gone out of business.
Stop with your blind fanboyism. He was right about the Wii HD... er, the Wii U. Cause that's basically what it is, a Wii HD.
Pachter gets tons of hate. Sure his predictions might not coincide with what you people believe, but he's still a likeable guy.
"OH NOEZ! HE PREDIKTED IN FAVER UHV SONY & MICROSOFT! HE HAETZ NINTENDO! RRRRAAAGGGEEE!"
His job isn't to side with any developer or hardware company. His job is to analyze the industry based on fluctuating trends. And let's face it, the Wii is dead. Nintendo doesn't really care about it anymore. 3rd-party devs have abandoned it. Everyone is moving on to the more powerful systems, and Kinect looks like it's the next big thing.
Stop being a fanboy. I may like Nintendo the best, but my judgement isn't clouded by fanboyism.
Also, could you imagine playing a Mario or Zelda game and not being able to restart the game after you finish it? I've replayed many of my old Mario games multiple times, just for the heck of it. If I'm unable to restart my game or delete save data, then the game will just sit on my shelf forever.
If other companies do this then I'm done with modern gaming.
Nintendo should have put the save file on the 3DS itself. The Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii all have save data tied to the system, and you can simply go to System Settings and delete it yourself.
Even better would be cloud storage, but I'm not sure if Nintendo would ever implement that.
NOA is stupid, that's what. They think only the established franchises can sell, and they never take risks on more obscure titles. Yes we got Rhythm Heaven and EBA, but those are few and far between.
To the people asking what's so important about these games:
Xenogears is part of the Xenosaga franchise (developed by Monolith Soft) The Last Story is an RPG made by the CREATOR OF FINAL FANTASY!!!
I'd say both games deserve to be released here (USA).There are plenty of fans of the Xeno series.
Nintendo is sitting on a gold mine with The Last Story, it's from the CREATOR OF FINAL FANTASY! For Nintendo to refuse localizing it here is just a move. It shows they don't care about their fans, nor do they respect Sakaguchi's work. Sakaguchi poured his heart into the game and NOA doesn't care. Well you know what Nintendo? Looks like you just opened up a huge can of worms with this one. There are PLENTY of people who will import these games. If you won't release them here, that is the last resort.
I personally won't hack my Wii, but over at GoNintendo there are plenty of people who will. The comments over there are full of rage and hatred. RMC is even hurt by Nintendo's decision, and he's the biggest Nintendo fan there is.
I love the Genesis games. I hated Sonic CD (the level designs were confusing and generic).
When I first played Sonic Adventure I loved it, but the game hasn't aged well at all. Horrible graphics, bad voice acting, horrible camera, glitchy controls, poor level designs, etc.
Sonic Adventure 2 was a huge improvement, but it still had a glitchy camera.
Sonic 06 was bad. It was basically Sonic Adventure in HD, with the same problems that plagued the original.
Sonic Unleashed was great. They finally fixed the camera, the Sonic stages were fun and exciting, the controls were tight and responsive. The only thing I didn't like were the "Werehog" stages. God of War for kids? Lame.
Sonic Rush was amazing. It was fast, frantic, and fun. A nice departure from the Genesis-style gameplay.
Sonic 4 was a decent throwback to the Genesis-era games. The physics were horrible though. Sonic's acceleration was too slow (look at his walking animation). There was no momentum whatsoever, he could basically walk up the side of a hill without running at full speed! Dimps should have gotten the physics right before finalizing the game.
Sonic Colors is basically Sonic Rush in 3D. The graphics are amazing, the music is superb (no more rock music, though I do admire Jun Senoue's guitar work). The controls are responsive, but Sonic's jumping feels very stiff, you can't really adjust your turn mid-air, and he falls too quickly.
Sonic Generations looks to be a nice blend of Genesis-era gameplay and Sonic Rush/Colors-style gameplay. The best of both worlds! I really hope Classic Sonic is playable in future games, cause I love the character. Plus I'm glad Sega hasn't completely abandoned that gameplay style of PLATFORMING mixed with speed.
He wasn't even talking about used games. He's comparing cheap App Store games to full-fledged console games. Until developers offer significant value that can rival console games (Dead Space is a good start) then the App Store will still be filled with throwaway titles.
He makes some very valid points. You can't make a large scale game like Call of Duty or Gears of War and expect to make a profit by selling it for $2. Smaller games like Angry Birds or Cut the Rope I can understand, but with the pricing model of $1 up to $5, publishers still have to sell A LOT of copies in order to generate any significant profit.
You won't see a game like Heavy Rain on the App Store cause it doesn't make any economic sense. Like the above posters said, you get what you pay for. Dead Space is a rare exception, but not many publishers are willing to take that kind of risk. Most $1 games I've played on my iPod are worthless throwaway titles. Even many of the $5 ones (like Infinity Blade) are very shallow and repetitive. You get what you pay for, and the more expensive games ($20 or more) usually offer more value (more bang for your buck).
I've been obsessed with Smash Bros. Brawl. It is the one game I play regularly on my Wii. There's just so much to do, secrets to unlock, challenges to master, etc. It's the perfect game!
And if anyone hasn't gotten Sonic Colors yet, go buy it now! It's phenomenal, it truly takes the best stuff from Unleashed (the high-speed stages and tight controls) and improves them in every way. The music is some of the best since the original Somic Adventure, and Sonics new voice suits him perfectly. And the graphics... Stunning.
Mini Mario = Super Mushroom powerup in a 3D adventure Tail in Mario logo = Return of the Tanooki Suit or Raccoon Leaf? Developed by the Galaxy team = Insanely creative levels and gameplay mechanics, coupled with beautiful graphics. Sounds awesome, can't wait for E3!
My only requests: Bring back the Kuribo's Shoe please! And have different colored Yoshis with special powers (like in Mario World).
Iwata is a brilliant tactful businessman. Sony could really learn some things by studying him. Nintendo knows how to market their products to the masses.
My god I need a 3DS. I'm so bummed that I wasted my money on an iPod touch, I should have just saved it for the 3DS.
Please stop hiring these outsiders who know nothing about videogames or the industry. Look at Nintendo of Japan, Saturo Iwata used to be a developer at HAL, so he knows about the ins and outs of game development. Why can't NOA hire people who actually worked in the gaming industry, on the front lines?

HD versions all the way. This looks like a carbon copy of Sonic Rush (not a bad thing of course).

How is it like Sonic's? You get hit and turn to small Mario.

You should change the developer info to EAD Tokyo. They're the ones that made this game (along with Mario Galaxy and DK Jungle Beat).

I absolutely love that art style. It looks like a cuter version of Mario Galaxy.

Super Mario 3D is more along the lines of Crash Bandicoot. It plays in 3D, but the levels are very linear.

Based on video footage I've seen, the game looks very slow-paced.
And it's EAD Tokyo, the studio that made DK Jungle Beat, as well as the Mario Galaxy series.
