Re: Flipper 2 Rushes North America on 26th January

HugoSmits

@14:

I don't know how other developers do it, but for Flipper it's pretty much the same in size. All ingame text is always there, so the US version also has the german,italian,french,etc text in there.. you just can't select it (only Spanish and English). I do replace the manual though..

In the end it shouldn't really matter, the difference is really really small.

Re: Flipper 2 Rushes North America on 26th January

HugoSmits

@Birdman13 well.. actually I'm doing you guys a favor! I save you alot of money!

I mean who needs stupid Nintendogs when you can be the proud owner of a goldfish IN A ROBOT SUIT!

Contra ? you can shoot with Banana's baby!

And who needs a stupid kite attached to their kart when you can inflate yourself and fly around the world that way!?

See ? Basically all you need is Flipper 2 and it will only costs you 500 Nintendo points!

Re: Review: Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish (DSiWare)

HugoSmits

@teros the scoring is based on how many times you die, number of button presses AND coins, enemies, traps,etc

The problem with random levels is that sometimes you have more coins/enemies than othertimes. Just like in zelda four swords (when you need to kill enemies for rupies).

So that really has a big impact on your score!

Re: Review: Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish (DSiWare)

HugoSmits

@Oddy: Light on content ? according to the review it took him around 1 hour to complete the story mode (= 80 rooms) so there are 220 more rooms to explore which totals up to almost 4 hours. And that doesn't include replay value (you can play them all in any theme + beat your hi-score)! I think we all got a little spoiled with free Zelda and other stuff And you can always make more content if you wish with the level editor

@battLeToaD @ThomasBW84: For people who really hate the level.. there's a bug in there to skip the level! when the platforms go down, just keep running. you will die, but your body will fall over the finish line thus skipping to the next level (you will lose 1 life though).

@Eden concept are lying around... but I honestly don't know when the first one will hit the shop. The problem is that I have to start from scratch; build a totally new 3DS framework,etc to work from. So it will take up some time!

Re: Review: Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish (DSiWare)

HugoSmits

@running_issue:

the button-tap issue is a perfect example of me playing the game too much to notice it. It’s really not that hard; you have to do this at the right moment.

See, the ‘boost’ Flush gets only works when his run-animation stops (and goes back into walking) if you tap while he’s running, it doesn’t do anything! So it’s all about timing... the level that gets metioned in the review (with the moving platforms) actually only needs a few taps to get through.. the taps just have to be at the right moment

I understand how this is hard for players that aren’t me, and I’m sorry for that!

@level_editor:

The level editor stuff; there was really no other way to do this. If I wanted to save more levels, I needed to reserve more space (means more blocks) which most players don’t like.

Sharing is extremely difficult. Not so much the program but to get through lotcheck. Because basically the level code is ‘programming code’ that gets executed at runtime. Which means a smart hacker could inject his own program and run it without the Nintendo copy-protection noticing it!

Rest assured; there will be a way to show/share your levels with others. I didn’t put the hint in there just to tease you guys and no, it will not be an update.

@review:
I honestly also expected a 8, the 7 is good.. I just don’t really understand why not an 8 after reading the review (the only real bad thing he calls out are the running levels).

Re: Interviews: Goodbye Galaxy Games - Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish

HugoSmits

thanks all for the kind comments! it was alot of hard work, so to see people excited about it is really cool

@Galaxia-Master Flipper 2 isn't oldskool enough for you ?

@brandonbwii I'm currently working on a 200 point DSiWare game, after that I will start to really work on the FPS and it's going to be for 3DSWare.

Re: Flipper 2 Gets European Release Date

HugoSmits

@7:
It will get there soon too.. I just don't have an official date yet!

@5:
It's still also a bit of a puzzle game. Much like wario-ware. You have to guess the action and use it to avoid traps.

@6:
Because I'm very proud of every pixel in there.. I want you to count them all

Re: First Impressions: Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish

HugoSmits

@brandonbwii

There will be some good answers on your questions soon (I also did an interview with NL). but for short :

level editor; it's very easy to use yet it gives you all the options that I had while desiging with the Windows level editor.

3DS: Goodbye Galaxy Games is an official licensed 3DS developer. So it's only a matter of time before something will hit the eshop!

@BulbasaurusRex:
No veterans just big fans! it's one of my favorite DOS game as well!

Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Regularly Offer Free Games for Download?

HugoSmits

no, you can't run a company on 'free'. Instead put some real quality in the store that justifice the high price tag. Also advertise alot, so that people know what to expect for such a price tag.

Also, release more games in with the same lenght as Four Swords. It isn't that long, but it's awesome! Making games less big makes them cheaper to produce.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition (DSiWare)

HugoSmits

@xj0462:

it saves automatically after you beat a dungeon/level, however the 'chamber of insights' doesn't count!

So the first time (especially as a new comer) you need to play for like 1 hour to get to the save point. It's really horrible in design. Even more so if you consider this is a handheld title, meaning most game sessions consist out of little bursts.

Re: Feature: Staff Memories of the Game Boy Advance

HugoSmits

I bought Ninja-Five-O for only 20 bucks back in the day I think it's the most amazing game I have for GBA (not because it's rare, but because it's really REALLY good gameplay wise).

Other than that I loved the FPS games (Doom, Ecks, Duke) and fighting games. Going from Street Fighter on the GBC to GBA was amazing.. colors everywhere!

Re: Flush the Goldfish Development Update

HugoSmits

@shinobi88

My current lunchbreaks are filled with streets of rage on Genesis and TNMT 2 : The Arcade Game for NES. So I think I got you covered, but you'll have to wait for the 3DS.

Notice that it's sometimes hard to judge the distance, especially when somebody is in the air ? the 3D screen could fix that

gameplay wise; I would keep it a simple system. Something like 1 button for kicking, 1 button for punching. Air attacks by jumping and pressing one of those buttons. Picking up by standing over a object and press down+punch. and a simple combo like TNMT has (press 1 and 2 quickly).

Re: Feature: Remembering the Game Boy Advance

HugoSmits

I started programming homebrew stuff on the gameboy classic.. but I didn't really got up to speed until the GBA. Man, I loved to program on it, such a clever and amazing system.

I bought so many titles; but the one I love the most must be Ninja Five-O what an amazing game!

It really deserves a second change as VC

Re: Flush the Goldfish Development Update

HugoSmits

@Oregano

2 independently, 3 with other companies. Ofcourse I have the 3DS-Ware games on my lists. But it will take a while (have to build a good and decent framework to work from).

@theblackdragon

If only you knew.. if only...

Re: Flush the Goldfish Development Update

HugoSmits

hey everybody.. thanks for the kind words!
@SnoozerBear

You wouldn't believe how much content is packed into this one.. it was such a massive job this time around. On top of it, I'm working on 5 other DS games!! I haven't had a day off since this year! (not even weekends)

@others
I hear alot of people saying he looks like Jim. Believe it or not, almost everything is inspired by the Earthworm Jim games, except for the suit/looks.

Many people liked Flush as a character in Flipper 1, so I wanted to build the second game around him. But he couldn't really do anything since he was in the fishbowl... that's how the suit came to be.

The gameplay is inspired by Earthworm jim though. Wacky animations, weird levels and bonus games.. it's all there

But let's be honest.. we haven't seen a good Earthworm Jim game since 1994... so is this really a bad thing ?

@BulbasaurusRex
Yeah... the Minion from Megamind came out AFTER I announced Flush.. I still think it's unbelievable that they came up with a fish in suit too.. what are the changes of that happening at the same time !?

Re: New Wii Design Could Go As Low as £80

HugoSmits

@Sam_Loser2

Do you remember the extra RAM memory you could put into your DS that came in the form of a gba cartridge (opera had it included) ? Well they made it standard in DSi, thats why there is no GBA support!

Re: Talking Point: The Great Nintendo 3DS Price Drop Debate

HugoSmits

Wii + Mario kart = 139,00 euro
xbox360 = 229,00 euro
ps3 = 250 euro

so I can get a full HD console for less than a 3DS. That just
wasn't right. The new price fits much better in place with
other hardware prices. So now people can justify the price.

All they need now is good games.

With Super Mario land, star fox and Mario Kart coming soon,
I don't think Nintendo has too much to worry about.

Re: Just Why Is La-Mulana Taking So Long?

HugoSmits

this is a real mess. It happend with Flipper as well. You can't really blame the developer. They basically NEED to release everything at the same time because of the LOTcheck system at Nintendo.

If you enter lotcheck without the german rating, you need to apply for a seperated lotcheck once you get the german rating. Even though this doesn't change anything to the game binary rom, the whole process has to be repeated (game testing,etc). Which can take up quite some time with a big game like this.

Re: Flipper 2 Trailer Released

HugoSmits

@xVermicide:

framerate is a combo of my poor video edit skills and recording from a emulator on a not so good pc. Made some pretty bad choices there.

Will improve it in the next trailer...

the game runs silky smooth thourgh!

Re: Flipper 2 Trailer Released

HugoSmits

@18

the gameplay footage was captured from an emulator. So that might explain the laggy part... on hardware it runs smoothly.

Flush alone has more than 200 frames of animation!

Re: Iwata Asks Delves Into Wii U Development

HugoSmits

@2 and 5

I didn't understand either.. but now that I'm living together it became my main gaming-device!

You see, I spend around 10 hours developing games each day. The other hours I try to spend at home with my girlfriend. And she doesn't want to sit next to me while I'm killing a bunch of dudes on the tv

So I sit next to her, she gets to watch sex & the city. We can talk, and I can play a game on my ipad

Also; I don't have to feel bad for buying new games. Since I don't have 40 hours to spend on one game,
I feel really bad forking over 60 bucks. Sure the Ipad games are much smaller, but than again I only
play them for an hour..

Re: TT Games: "Disney Universe Rips Us Off"

HugoSmits

brick happens! (does anybody have the same tshirt ?)

I mean, you invent good stuff and eventually other games do it as well, making it the standard. You don't get to complain about it.

Just like Id software doesn't get to complain about every FPS game that comes out and basically uses things they invented with Wolf3D and Doom.

Re: First Flipper 2 Screenshots Released

HugoSmits

@shinesprite:

I cannot totally reveal 'how' or 'what'.. but Flipper 2 will be alot longer than Flipper 1

@smashbrawler331:
I was playing Earthworm Jim 24/7 for a few weeks, After playing 1&2 to the bone.. I still wanted more, but there is none (well.. I'm not counting Jim 3D and the GBC game) so I tried to create my own platformer! maybe that's why ?

Re: Flipper Sequel Gets a Publisher, Aims for Q2 Release

HugoSmits

@Odnetnin:

Yes, I hope this will be Engine's and my best game

@mariofanatic128:

I'm going to try hard not to make you forget it again, from now on I will post weekly blog post that are going to reveal new info & screens!

@Zsxdflip:
Trailer is coming, but probably within a month or so. Before that you have to do it with new screens

DEAR READERS: please start saving your points. I know there are a lot of lousy DSiWare titles coming out the last few weeks, and I know alot of you want to spend their last points before 3DS hits.

Please wait till Flipper 2 is out; because it's going to be a rich product. With lots of animations,sounds and levels. So if you want to spend your last points, you might as well do it on a product that's really packed with love!
