Little late to seeing this, but I think a DSiWare version of eReader or (gasp! iPhone port!) Stanza, or some other popular eBook reader software with support for reading eBooks off of an SD Card and native access to various eBook stores would be right up my alley!
I thought Super Mario Galaxy was a unique and enjoyable experience in and of itself. I'm going for all 242 stars in it (the game's HUUUUGE!), and the Prankster Comets are killing me. Oh, and when we're talking about style, SMG is full of it, especially in its majestic orchestrated soundtrack and some of the more whimsical galaxies.
To be perfectly honest, I've still yet to play Yoshi's Island (no need to flame me for that, thank you!), so I'm not gonna judge it just yet, but I do dig the art style!
Now, if it doesn't come to VC soon, I'll have no choice but to emulate it! We're probably gonna get it as the 400th or 500th game, like they gave us Super Mario RPG as the 250th, and Majora's Mask as the 300th.
Congratulations all you lucky winners! I really wanted to win the Nostalgia raffle, but...another time. Hoping for a New Super Mario Bros. Wii giveaway!
Damn! I was just about to say that! Speaking of cinematic experience, there's no real need to look any further than Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros. Brawl for proof that it exists on the Wii! SSBB works wonders with its incredible pre-rendered cutscenes between levels and battles in the Subspace Emissary, while SMG continues the feeling throughout the game itself, what with the epic sequences as you leave the observatory and fly to a galaxy, or walk around planets, with the view flipping, zoming, rotating and such. Jeez, I love that game. Don't forget about Zelda and Metroid Prime games, though! While focussed more on the first-person or behind-the-back perspectives, they're very cinematic in their own rights, too.
While were still on the topic, COD4 & COD4+2 (as I like to call it) are actually developed for the Xbox 360 and then ported to PS3 and PC/Mac. This is due to the Xbox 360's rather inferior power compared to the PS3 and PC, but making such a popular, traditionally-multiplatform franchise like COD a PS3/PC-exclusive series drastically reduces Activision's possible profits. The reason they don't develop it for Wii separately is due to time and budget constraints, and if it was originally developed for Wii, the graphics would look like crap on the other systems.
IDK about COD, but I'm just fine playing it on my recently-upgraded-to-gaming-standards PC.
I've got a feeling, though, that Nintendo is keeping a HUGE secret from us about their next generation of consoles. Warning: Overly-active nerd imagination has been activated. Rest of comment is likely to be completely irrelevant to the original purpose of the comment, and will likely get somewhat technical. My own guesses are that the console and handheld will be developed side-by-side, possibly sharing some hardware along the way, and that all this hardware will be brand-new, custom-engineered to perfection, and (in the console's case, at least) capable of handling 60+ fps in photorealistic open-world games in resolutions at and even beyond full 1080p. The handheld would have power comparable to that of a current Wii, and would still, of course, have dual screens; however, it would have dramatically increased screen resolutions (comparable to 720p when both screens are used "as one"), will be able to consistently output rock-solid 60 fps 3D graphics (with texture filtering this time around!) to both screens simultaneously, and would have the rumoured 3G or even WiMax (a.k.a. 4G) "always-on" connection. Both of the consoles will be powerful enough to run games from their predecessors in "forced" HD (akin to cranking the settings for an N64 emulator, by forcing the game to run at higher resolutions and applying additional texture filtering, such as 2xSaI) using software-based emulation. The new systems will be digital-download-only, but will feature separately-sold disc-drives/cartridge-readers, respectively, to avoid re-purchasing-as-digital issues. The home console will feature a large solid-state disk with a three-digit capacity in GB, while the handheld will feature the same storage technology, but shrunken down and with a digit less. USB storage expansion will be fully supported on both systems, and will integrate seamlessly with the respective system's internal memory. At the very least, the console will be natively backwards-compatible with all Wii and GameCube controllers, but will also feature special accessories/adapters facilitating the use of truly classic controllers, such as the SNES pad, or N64 "fork-like" analog stick-enabled revolution. I'll just stop there and actually write up a document for my predictions instead.
Introducing the UNES (Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System/Ultra Famicom) and the Nintendo DS SP (Nintendo DS SuperPower), coming soon to a gaming convention near you...
Now, wouldn't it be cool if you could use the WiiSpeak to chant spells or incantations or something? I know Link was never much of a wizard/mage, but that could change.
Here's hoping for a cat suit in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It could enhance your jump and make you really quiet (great for sneaking up on baddies!), while giving you a scratch'n'bite attack or something like that. Besides, I think Mario would kinda look cool in it!
They'll probably have a dog suit in there too then.
But if we don't see a cat suit in SMG2, we're probably gonna get a cat of some kind in Zelda Wii. Link might have it as a pet that follows him around normally, but can have control switched to it to get through small spaces or distract enemies or something.
Who knows, there might be a secret cat suit in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, too. You never know...
It could also have something to do with Metroid: Other M, though I'm not sure if ol' Shiggy is actually involved in the development of that.
All this excludes the inevitable Nintencats, of course.
I'd consider it if they found a way to upscale DS games to double their resolution, so they wouldn't be pixelated on the XL's screen. But knowing the actual software and hardware architecture of the DS systems, that would be impossible with the current hardware unless they could use software emulation or a second GPU performing postprocessing on the frames from the first one. But the first option is inpalpable due to the relatively limited power of the DSi (let alone Lite and Phat) and the second one would provide a somewhat fuzzy image and cause the cost of the system to skyrocket.
Hoping for the nVidia contract to go through soon. The extra horsepower they'd get from nVidia hardware could be used for great things, such as a centralized OS, rather than a simple "boot menu" like the current DSi.
Warning: the next section of this post is likely to get very technical:
No current DS games actually rely on an operating system (OS) to run. Theoretically speaking, if you could put a DSiWare game on a cartridge, remove the system lock from it, and stick it into a Lite/Phat, it should work. The reason for this is that all DS games (DSiWare, DSi, DSi-enhanced, or standard DS Phat/Lite alike) run themselves directly on the system's hardware. This leads to the lack of software-based multi-tasking support (no custom music during games!, a la iPhone/iPod Touch), no possible patches or updates to a game, unless it's contained in flash memory or EEPROM (no WPA(2) support for already-released games, which could've been added with an OS-based structure)(the Wi-Fi stacks/drivers/whatever you want to call them are contained on each cartridge that uses Wi-Fi for anything. The only thing loaded out of the DS itself is your network preferences, as well as your system's Nintendo WFC info and MAC address.) The OS-based approach would also improve the general performance of the system. Eer noticed the load times when "opening" the system settings or an app on the DSi? That's because it has to quit out of the menu and then start the app (yes, even the settings are a separate app, as far as I know). An OS would minimize these times significantly, as long as the system has enough RAM and CPU power to handle it.
Jeez, what a post. Just trying to state my ideas here for the successor to the DS lineup!
*starts to fantasize about technical specs of the successor...
So...the Kirby game that was rumoured, and sort-of announced more than two years ago finally gets a confirmation? Cool, but I'm really hoping to get my grubby little hands on Super Mario galaxy 2 ASAP! Must find something to do in the meantime... replays Super Mario Galaxy AGAIN pre-orders New Super Mario Bros. Argh! The wait! The agonizing wait! heads to Virtual Console
Too much Virtual Console stuff for me to even consider this, but looks awesome nonetheless! Especially that we've got Wii Sports Resort AND a MotionPlus in there!
My launch Wii still works as well as ever, and that's after surviving several 80cm drops, being knocked sideways while on its stand numerous times, and surviving my cat's abuse before I finally laid it on its side and put it behind a glass door. Besides, I like Photo Channel 1.0.
'K! I'll use this, but how about a full-on Facebook app like the iPhone/iPod touch one?
Better yet, they could start a brand-new category of DSi apps called "Online Services" or something, which could include apps for Youtube, Facebook's competitors (MySpace, etc.), e-mail, and so on
Not to mention that I'm hoping for video recording support for the cameras. I'd like to think that a simple update to the camera/photos app could add this in. I'm fine with SD-only support for these videos.
And how about using downloaded stuff that's on SD cards, a la Wii Menu 4.0?
And a DSi VC would be awesome, too.
Now, if only they could overhaul their software architecture to allow the DSi to multi-task (e.g.: play a game while running an app, say, the music player at the same time.).
Hi, I'm new to NintendoLife and this is my first comment here, but on with my list!
N64:
Donkey Kong 64 (what the **** happened to the DK franchise after this game?!)
Super Smash Bros. (got Brawl, but a look back is always nice.)
SNES:
Super Mario All-Stars(+World possibly?) (I like the enhanced graphics and sound quality of the 4 originals, and the 4 save files for each game) Yoshi's Island: Super Mario World 2 (need I say more?)
Arcade: Hydro Thunder (played it a few times at some arcades; challenging, but definetely fun.)
For a future DSi Virtual Handheld(/Console?)
It would be cool if, when they release the DSi VC, a DSi could be linked with a Wii, so that VC games you buy on the Wii can be "synced" to your DSi (here's hoping for SD card support, a la Wii Menu 4.0), complete with save game data, without having to buy the same game twice. (You're at home, in the middle of a dungeon in Zelda: Link to the Past, but you've gotta leave. Sync it to a DSi and keep it going on the go!)
Now, a list for the actual service:
All the previous Pokemon games (along with a free app or added feature to transfer/migrate your Pokemon to Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver)
The Super Mario Land games
(already announced, but worthy of a list nonetheless) The entire Game & Watch series
Super Mario World & Yoshi's Island (they're already on GBA, so why not DSi, too?)
Donkey Kong Country series
The 2D Zelda games (original, Link to the Past, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Link's Awakening, etc.)
Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask (might actually be better suited for retail release, considering the larger filesize of N64 games.) (They've already done this before with SM64 DS, which is much better than the original! Let's see it with Zelda!)
The original Genesis Sonic games (1, 2, & 3) (great fun to be had!)
Don't forget the Kirby originals!
Quite honestly, I don't have that much experience with retro games, as the Wii was my first console (I'm one of the lucky launch buyers, though!) and I had access to PC games for the first time around 1999-2000. That's why my list isn't as big on the third-party side.
Some games I would've put on my list had they not been released recently:
