Re: Reaction: Age Ratings and Video Games

FOREST_RANGER

I specifically like the rating systems (ESRB) because it warns parents of what kinds of content is portrayed, but that's not what concerns me.

My worry is about the future parents and current young parents: I wonder if they have a solid foundation that they can teach in their kids. In other words, have the parents influenced moral and cultural practices in a consistent manner in their children? This seems to be very hard to grasp in families of lower socio-economic status in the United States, especially when there are a considerable amount of them going to the same school in a given neighborhood.

The question of whether there are enough parents being good parents leads to another issue: globalization of culture in due part to telecommunications and mass media. I don't think it's a good idea for a child to be raised solely on mass media (i.e. television, Internet, ads, video games, etc.) because the messages a child receives from an ad or TV show (for example) may contradict a parent and local community's belief (this applies to more than merely religious beliefs) and ideologies, not to mention how reliant they may be on the medias to have 'fun.'

Now one of the latest forms of entertainment in the mass media is video games, where you can spend anywhere from 5 hours to over 100+ to have fun. If a parent hasn't grasped consistent core foundations from their own parents, I'd think they rely on video games to let children have fun. However, since video games is relatively still young compared to other forms of entertainment, I fear that parents use video games as a virtual babysitter, rather than family fun.

Essentially, if a family dives into the world of gaming, they should do so responsibly, but that's hard to do if they aren't open to new stuff and aren't raised with consistent ideologies :3

Re: Crytek: Crysis 3 on Wii U 'Is a Possibility'

FOREST_RANGER

From what I have heard, PC gamers weren't fond of Crysis 2 after the 1st game. I'm currently playing the 1st game on my laptop, and it's pretty sweet so far. The forests are fairly beautiful and the enemies seemed pretty smart but, the story on the other hand.... I certainly hope they make Crysis 3 similar to Crysis in scale (I've heard the 2nd game was constricted in corridor-like environments).

Re: Mass Effect 3 Extended Ending on Disc for Wii U

FOREST_RANGER

@edhe Didn't they severely cut the slack on DRM recently, or is it more than that?

I'm gonna play the 1st two games, so I can't really comment other than wondering what made them bring the 3rd game. Did Nintendo desperately beg EA to publish some Wii U games?

Re: Iwata Expects Wii U to Last a Generation

FOREST_RANGER

@Wheels2050 Let's not forget about the next generation console pricing, for all of the console manufacturers seem to be in a sticky situattion. I honestly believe that the Xbox and PS4 will be very expensive if they really push the graphical and processing power. As a matter of fact, it'd be hard to compete with their own consoles. I'm also worried about the costs of game development from this point on.

Re: Talking Point: Another Look at the News - 22nd June

FOREST_RANGER

So it's clear now:

  • This model is not the officially revised version and is for an alternate demographic (meaning they're both sold in retail)
  • The lack of a 2nd circle pad implies that Nintendo will never use a 2nd circle pad (releasing a revised model with another pad would supposedly warrant for a larger version with the same thing and would be too many models to keep track of overall)
  • The resolution is likely the same, as upscaling would require more powerful components. Don't know about the processor, but Nintendo would have to use another model of the PICA-200 GPUs and thereby increase the cost of the system. Emulation would also be prominent and put more stress on developers, even if Nintendo magically raised the clock speeds in this unit instead of using powerful components so as to make higher resolutions possible.
  • There is mixed reviews on its appearance, shame on you Nintendo for not designing it that pleases both crowds (excluding uninterested owners of current model)
  • The broadly spaced buttons implies that this model is for people with big hands. It may look ergonomically horrible for some, but others have complained of hand cramps from the smaller version.

Conclusion, Nintendo had not made some consistent strategies :/

Re: CryEngine 3 "Runs Beautifully" on Wii U

FOREST_RANGER

I'm honestly not too fond of the PC version of CryEngine 3. The way the frames are anti-aliased along with the way motion-blur is rendered...is just ugly. Not sure about the console versions though.

Anyway, that's nice to know.

Re: Miyamoto: Nintendo Focused on Fun, Not Competition

FOREST_RANGER

There have been a bit of developers getting this kind of opinion as well, and I feel the same way. I advocate for more child-friendly games in the market and more variance in types of games.

When I mean child friendly, I mean any games that a child can play with little or no harmful effects of cognitive dissonance. Preferrably, make games that both a adult and child can play so that any irresponsible parent doesn't get Halo for their child (children under 7 years would be better off doing other stuff).

Re: First Impressions: ZombiU

FOREST_RANGER

If this is supposed to be a survival horror game, they're walking on a fine line with the brutal-sounding game-over-like death, killing the immersion.

Other than that, this sounds like a neat twist to zombie shooters

Re: Resident Evil Revelations Producer Says Series Needs Action for Success

FOREST_RANGER

What I've always wanted Capcom to do is combine Resident Evil 4's shooting aspect with the atmosphere and horror aspect of the previous Resident Evils. However, I now think Capcom should do something to bring something new to the action/adventure genre. What me like Resident Evil 4 was that its shooting mechanics were unique and made me think this could provide new ways to interact with enemies and the environment. As a matter of fact, I would probably like Resident Evil even more if the company did something new in the seires rather than ONLY to return to survival horror roots.

Re: Talking Point: Why Wii U's Image Must Grab Attention

FOREST_RANGER

I think the console should have some choices of color...just not the "colorful" or "saturated" looking ones. Otherwise, I don't mind the Wii's color scheme to transfer to the WiiU. The red 3DS, on the other hand, looks so awesome that I want it, and that makes me think Nintendo should release the Wii U in B&W (and throw in some limited addition colors) while they release more colors for the 3DS*!

The 3DS is a handheld console that shouts out "personal" in my head: it's your own personal console and and can carry it with you, so why not get one that reflects...I don't know... what you like? For example, no one will be constantly looking at your 3DS screen, for it's just too tiny. Therefore, I'd feel a sense of privacy and self-centeredness.

Consoles, on the other hand, are following the "sleek-and-sexy" design philosophy that is institutionalized throughout the tech world (accounting for the culture, geeks, science, and other techy stuff) and the family homes. And since the console is more suitable to be a family/social entertainment than the 3DS, just attract the family to consoles with the design that both adults and children like or tolerate. That's not a bad thing. I just miss THE purple console's design

Overall, I'm okay with the current the current color schemes of the Wii and Wii U. Reverting back to a colorful, toyish console will seem backwards to me since I'm all grown up. Plus, the minimalist color schemes are popular today.

*I didn't realize that the sentence was incomplete and that I didn't mention the 3DS in comparison. Now it's corrected.

Re: Rollercoaster Tycoon 3DS Springs Back Into Life

FOREST_RANGER

I have another question that isn't meant to be answered right away: how will the game play out that makes it successful?

If the game is rendered in 3D (not stereoscopic 3D), they better put a lot of thought in the series's core gameplay mechanics and bring something new to the table because it's virtually impossible to give players the freedom and flexibility like its PC counterparts (wouldn't be surprised if there were limits of how many rides and Rollercoasters there are) due to the system's limited hardware. My opinion: it'd be lovely if they do go with this approach, for I'd like to see Rollercoaster Tycoon at its simplest and have it remind me of why I liked the game in the 1st place. Sadly, this would put off any players who liked the game as a sandbox.

If they try to replicate the 3rd game and sell it as the portable version, I hope they resorted back to the 2D isometric view and hired Chris Sawyer (original creator) to really optimize the game for the 3DS's hardware. The 3DS seems to have the performance capacity similar to the late 90s PC hardware (except for the CPU), so there'd be some hope of incorperating all of the elements. Despite what I mentioned for this approach, it's safe to assume that the game will likely use 3D graphics and not the 2D version. But hey, why not play Rollercoaster Tycoon on the go :3

I can't think of any other approach that'd make this game successful, whether it's merit or sales.
EDIT: at least, not at the moment

Re: Battlefield 3 and NES Sounds Are Finally Together

FOREST_RANGER

@Pichuka97 I would love for the Wii to have first person shooters, but it wouldn't be possible to port it to the Wii without compromising the experience and using more time. The game not only relies on the GPU to look pretty, but it also relies on a powerful CPU for processing big explosions (physics) and some post-processing image effects. The memory is also too small to support the massive multiplayer maps (maybe for the story mode since some people say it's almost as linear as COD). It's just too big of a risk for the company.

Re: Nintendo Leaves BAFTA Empty-Handed

FOREST_RANGER

Oh, what a pitty to see Nintendo leave with no awards. I've only briefly played Peggle, but what does it have that Super Mario 3D Land doesn't (besides the cheap price tag)?

Well, let's hope that this will inspire Nintendo to work harder and create more compelling games.

Re: Michael Pachter Suggests That Wii U Could Struggle

FOREST_RANGER

Well, while it's too early to tell estimate Wii U's success, I'm a wee bit concerned. I haven't heard of a single Wii U game to be released as a launch title; the Wii U didn't make as big as an impression as the Wii did (in my humble opinion); that controller looks like it drives up the manufacturing and development costs; if Nintendo sells at a lost, a bad lineup of launch games may not impress a lot of gamers and could hurt profits.
