@DennisReynolds The new artstyle is worse. The new combat is worse. And the new dialogue has terrible writing to the point where you can tell what was from the original and what was added in Resynced.
@BrazillianCara Pretty sure that if this was the first game in the series or it wasn’t a Nintendo game people wouldn’t be talking about this game much at all
@OrtadragoonX The OoT remake definitely looks like a reimagining. If it was going to be a faithful remake they would have showed something like the iconic intro recreated with modern graphics, just like how the Link’s Awakening remake reveal showed the faithfully recreated intro and some 1 to 1 gameplay. Everything they showed in the OoT remake reveal looks completely different from the original.
And as you said, Nintendo has done reimaginings before. Zero Mission and Samus Returns for 3DS. One could also argue A Link Between Worlds is a reimagining of A Link to the Past. Super Mario 64 DS is also quite different from the original.
@Supadav03 It’s definitely worth playing the original. The remake will most likely not be as good as the original. And there’s a good chance it’ll basically be a completely different game like Final Fantasy 7 Remake or the Resident Evil remakes.
@Sepewrath Starting at the beginning of a dungeon makes sense. If you just respawned exactly where you left off when you died that would make it way too easy.
@Sepewrath “Definitive” means it is as close to objectively possible the best way to experience the game. Most of the changes made to Majora’s Mask 3D made the game worse, so it is definitely not definitive.
For example, the definitive way to experience Ocarina of Time is the Ship of Harkinian port.
@Awakened_Link Majora’s Mask 3D is definitely not the definitive edition. The only way an updated port of MM3D can be the definitive version is if they add an “N64 Mode” that reverts all the gameplay changes they made to the 3DS version.
@WiltonRoots What artificial length? If any Zelda game does not have artificial length, it is OoT. OoT is the shortest 3D Zelda game, and there is pretty much zero padding.
@Sepewrath Well you got to compare apples to apples here. So let’s compare OoT’s Hyrule Field to BotW’s Hyrule Field. Because comparing only Hyrule Field in OoT to BotW’s entire map makes no sense.
BotW’s Hyrule Field is much emptier than OoT’s and it’s not even close. The only thing interesting in BotW’s Hyrule Field is the ruins of Lon Lon ranch. Shrines are basically BotW’s equivalent of grottos but inferior because they feel so disconnected from the world. Stables? In OoT Lon Lon Ranch is technically a stable and in Hyrule Field, and it is far more fleshed out and interesting than any of BotW’s stables. If you’re counting enemy encampments then you might as well count the poes in OoT. And the “mini bosses” are the same hinoxes and stone taluses copy and pasted over and over.
What do you mean take a leaf out of BotW’s book? BotW is literally the epitome of needless bloat with no substance. BotW is even emptier than OoT’s Hyrule Field.
@DollyrotsFan1 Honestly with Mario there's basically two separate series. There's the 2D games which are linear platformers (Super Mario Bros. 1/2/3, World, New Super Mario Bros. series, and Wonder). And then there is the 3D collectathon Mario series (64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1/2, Odyssey). 3D Land/World are basically 3D entries of the linear platformer series.
Donkey Kong is not a series. Donkey Kong Country is a series. And yeah, Donkey Kong 64 and Bananza are not Donkey Kong Country games.
Open World games were not made popular with BotW, they were the craze at least as far back as 2011 with the release of Skyrim. And it has been a stain on modern game design. Now basically every major game release has to be open world because of this weird mindset that "open world = good and modern, linear = bad and outdated".
@Itsashame I really don't get how people consider BotW to be the greatest open world game of all time. They basically removed everything that made the Zelda series great, and replaced it with hours of walking across a giant empty world where most of the content is just shrines and korok seeds, which gets old and repetitive fast.
Honestly even other open world games like Skyrim have much more depth.
@PeteW How many games are there like traditional 3D Zelda with the semi-linear metroidvania style progression and the excellent dungeon design? Yeah, very few.
@PeteW It's crazy that people still haven't learned that not every game has to be open world. Most of the time "open world" just means dozens of hours walking across an empty map doing repetitive copy and pasted content. The open world craze is a cancer on modern gaming, it even infected Metroid. We need more linear or semi--linear games.
@the_beaver Just think about it for a few moments. Games like Okami are clearly labeled Zelda-likes because of their similarities to Zelda. If you took BotW or TotK and removed all the Zelda branding from it (names, places, etc.) nobody would ever compare it to Zelda. It would likely be compared to other open world games instead like Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, etc.
@LastFootnote Yep, there hasn't been a real Final Fantasy game since 2001 as well. Though with Zelda it is far worse as there are tons of classic style turn based JRPGs out there that scratch the classic Final Fantasy itch, including a game that won game of the year last year. There is very little out there that scratches the classic 3D Zelda itch.
Actually we haven't gotten a real Zelda game in over a decade. Sorry but BotW and TotK are not real Zelda games, they are generic open world games with a Zelda skin.
That's why both should be an option. What if I want to own classics like Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, etc. instead of just renting them?
This seems to be a thing with Square Enix remasters/remakes, not including the extra content from previous rereleases, for some reason. (Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Dragon Quest 1/2/3 Switch ports, and DQ3 HD-2D)
@Daniel36 You don't need to have nostalgia. I played the game for the first time a few years ago and thought it was a masterpiece. If you enjoy turn based JRPGs, you'll enjoy Final Fantasy 9.
@Andee Resident Evil 4 isn't a straight remake though. It is much more faithful than the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, but it is still not even close to a straight remake. It is still basically a completely different game.
Stuff like Link's Awakening, Super Mario RPG, and Thousand Year Door are straight remakes.
@JohnnyMind Unless it is basically a straight remaster it won't be better than the original. The original FF9 is art. As another comment said, remaking FF9 is like saying we're gonna remake the Mona Lisa. There's literally no reason not to play the Switch port of OG FF9. Most video game remakes of great classic games in general usually don't live up to the original.
@JohnnyMind I'd recommend playing the original first regardless. It's a masterpiece and held up extremely well. Knowing modern Square Enix the remake, if it exists, likely won't be as good as the original.
@Daniel36 The original game is available on Switch. I recommend playing it. It holds up extremely well. No need waiting for a remake that likely won't be as good as the original.
@Not_Soos You're thinking of remasters that are usually a straight improvement and the "definitive version". Remakes are bigger overhauls, and most of the time there is something lost in translation. Like I definitely would not call Link's Awakening remake or Super Mario RPG remakes the definitive versions. Super Mario RPG remake especially butchers the gameplay and balancing. And then you have games like Majora's Mask 3D which is almost a straight up downgrade from the original.
The problem with video game remakes is that the mindset seems to be that of replacement, where it is supposed to replace the original, even when most of the times aspects of the original are undermined in the remake. The originals should always be available on modern consoles, which I think is a huge problem for something like Super Mario RPG where there is no way to play the original on modern consoles, so the remake effectively becomes the "replaced" version of the game.
Personally I think instead of making remakes that fundamentally alter the core of what a game was they should instead focus on making the vast majority of old games available on modern consoles, perhaps through a Virtual Console or even NSO service (but far more comprehensive, these services are extremely limited and likely don't even contain 1% of all games ever released).
What's the deal with people's obsession with Video Game remakes? With movies everybody is sick and tired of remakes, but with video games people are weirdly obsessed. Like Nintendo patents a new artstyle and the first thing people think of is remakes, not new games? What the hell?
@NeonPizza They messed up Majora's Mask 3D. MM3D is far worse than the original. Meanwhile I disagree about Skyward Sword HD and think it's a straight upgrade from the Wii version.
@valcoholic Majora's Mask 3D is inferior to the original though. Sure, the graphics are better, but there are so many bad gameplay changes in it that are completely pointless or just dumb down the game
To the people that say it doesn't feel like Zelda, it's probably the closest thing there is to a game like a 3D Zelda. Seriously, what other games are there that are like 3D Zelda games?
@Caryslan Majora's Mask is NOT better played on 3DS. Majora's Mask 3D made so many unnecessary changes just to dumb down the game and lower the difficulty for a more casual audience. Majora's Mask is best played on the Wii U Virtual Console
