That's why both should be an option. What if I want to own classics like Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, etc. instead of just renting them?
This seems to be a thing with Square Enix remasters/remakes, not including the extra content from previous rereleases, for some reason. (Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Dragon Quest 1/2/3 Switch ports, and DQ3 HD-2D)
@Daniel36 You don't need to have nostalgia. I played the game for the first time a few years ago and thought it was a masterpiece. If you enjoy turn based JRPGs, you'll enjoy Final Fantasy 9.
@Andee Resident Evil 4 isn't a straight remake though. It is much more faithful than the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, but it is still not even close to a straight remake. It is still basically a completely different game.
Stuff like Link's Awakening, Super Mario RPG, and Thousand Year Door are straight remakes.
@JohnnyMind Unless it is basically a straight remaster it won't be better than the original. The original FF9 is art. As another comment said, remaking FF9 is like saying we're gonna remake the Mona Lisa. There's literally no reason not to play the Switch port of OG FF9. Most video game remakes of great classic games in general usually don't live up to the original.
@JohnnyMind I'd recommend playing the original first regardless. It's a masterpiece and held up extremely well. Knowing modern Square Enix the remake, if it exists, likely won't be as good as the original.
@Daniel36 The original game is available on Switch. I recommend playing it. It holds up extremely well. No need waiting for a remake that likely won't be as good as the original.
@Not_Soos You're thinking of remasters that are usually a straight improvement and the "definitive version". Remakes are bigger overhauls, and most of the time there is something lost in translation. Like I definitely would not call Link's Awakening remake or Super Mario RPG remakes the definitive versions. Super Mario RPG remake especially butchers the gameplay and balancing. And then you have games like Majora's Mask 3D which is almost a straight up downgrade from the original.
The problem with video game remakes is that the mindset seems to be that of replacement, where it is supposed to replace the original, even when most of the times aspects of the original are undermined in the remake. The originals should always be available on modern consoles, which I think is a huge problem for something like Super Mario RPG where there is no way to play the original on modern consoles, so the remake effectively becomes the "replaced" version of the game.
Personally I think instead of making remakes that fundamentally alter the core of what a game was they should instead focus on making the vast majority of old games available on modern consoles, perhaps through a Virtual Console or even NSO service (but far more comprehensive, these services are extremely limited and likely don't even contain 1% of all games ever released).
What's the deal with people's obsession with Video Game remakes? With movies everybody is sick and tired of remakes, but with video games people are weirdly obsessed. Like Nintendo patents a new artstyle and the first thing people think of is remakes, not new games? What the hell?
@NeonPizza They messed up Majora's Mask 3D. MM3D is far worse than the original. Meanwhile I disagree about Skyward Sword HD and think it's a straight upgrade from the Wii version.
@valcoholic Majora's Mask 3D is inferior to the original though. Sure, the graphics are better, but there are so many bad gameplay changes in it that are completely pointless or just dumb down the game
To the people that say it doesn't feel like Zelda, it's probably the closest thing there is to a game like a 3D Zelda. Seriously, what other games are there that are like 3D Zelda games?
@Caryslan Majora's Mask is NOT better played on 3DS. Majora's Mask 3D made so many unnecessary changes just to dumb down the game and lower the difficulty for a more casual audience. Majora's Mask is best played on the Wii U Virtual Console

Re: Final Fantasy 9 Remake Hopes Rise As Square Enix Teases Anniversary Projects
@ZeldaFan83 HD-2D? Are you kidding me? Why replace the great and unique artstyle of FF9 with an artstyle that has already been used to death?
Re: Final Fantasy 9 Remake Hopes Rise As Square Enix Teases Anniversary Projects
@Serpenterror Trials of Mana Remake artstyle is just so generic and ugly in my opinion
Re: Final Fantasy 9 Remake Hopes Rise As Square Enix Teases Anniversary Projects
@nocdaes Uh, doesn't more time in development make it more likely to be a larger overhaul like FF7 Remake and less likely to be a faithful remake?

Honestly I hope they don't make an FF9 Remake. Modern Square Enix would absolutely butcher it.

@abbyhitter Before any remakes we need the original Chrono Trigger available on modern consoles.

@imgrowinglegs No, the 3DS version of Majora's Mask sucks. There's a video by Nerrel that explains all the bad changes.

Majora's Mask is most certainly not best played on the 3DS. Majora's Mask 3D has so many terrible changes.

Amazing game, but the original, not the 3DS remake. Majora's Mask 3D dumbs down and lowers the difficulty too much
