@Jade37 Thanks, you’re right. I was checking the game voucher list and Metroid Prime 4 still doesn’t appear on there here in the UK, hopefully they’ll update that page soon. Going through the preorder process from the store page it did give me the option to use the voucher. Tried the same on Mario Galaxy just in case but sadly looks like they’re going to leave that out of the scheme.
Wouldn’t be as bad if they added the pack to NSO Game Vouchers. Not holding my breath though, they’re supposed to keep adding titles next year but Pokemon Legends Z-A is the last game added. No sign of Metroid Prime 4 on there either.
@KingMike It’s not piracy, Nintendo’s own website described how to do it. The primary intention is to make life easier for families with multiple consoles, just like it is on Playstation and Xbox. Those families can no longer play the same game together on Nintendo if it has an online component without buying extra copies. It’s not going to generate extra sales, instead of buying two copies they’ll just buy something else.
This is the final death knell for my Switch 2 preorders. I can’t bring myself to pay £160 per game for local multiplayer. Frustrated they’ve taken this away from the existing Switch too, so much for it being optional.
This feels like some fairly draconian DRM hidden behind a cute interface, taking advantage of the confusion around how it currently works. While optional now, I expect it will become mandatory on the Switch 2. The early launch on the Switch to get people used to it and limit any backlash.
It’s making me reconsider upgrading to the Switch 2, which would have been day one, and also whether to still buy games on Switch rather than Xbox, PS, or Steam.
The current system works well on the Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. It’s pretty much the same across all of them. I buy most of my games digitally and when I upgrade console I tend to keep my old one. Anyone can play on the primary console under their own account, while I can play on any other console as my account as long as I’m online. All games can be downloaded to each console, and cloud saves mean switching between them is pretty seamless. We can also play online together at the same time and everyone is happy.
We’ve ended up with three Switches in the house and hundreds of games on my account. It works well, I don’t need to think about which account to buy the games under. I buy them all under my account, the household has access on the primary console and I have access on any secondary consoles. This new system would introduce a lot of unnecessary friction and admin moving games between them. It removes one of the key benefits of downloads over physical copies.
There are a few potential benefits to the new system in lending games, making a game available offline on a secondary switch, and a household with three or more different users and switches. Unfortunately none of these are useful to me.
I’ll reserve judgement until more information comes out, but if this is just a convoluted way of closing the loophole and stopping two people sharing the same digital game it’s only going to make me buy less games not more copies or buy them on a different platform entirely.
@Red_Silurian Yep, my sub was due to expire in March 2022 and it wanted around £48 to upgrade. I redeemed the 12 month code to extend it, went back in and it had gone down to £19. Didn’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work. Only issue looks to be if you have more than two years left on your sub you’d lose what’s left.
Bought a cheap 12 month family code to extend my current subscription before upgrading, so saved about £5. If you’re not currently subscribing you could probably stack 2 and save £10. Still overpriced but makes it a little better.
Anyone else finding My Nintendo to be a disincentive to buy games? I pick most Nintendo games up digitally and tend to already have the ones on discount. I now find myself holding off buying games at full price in case there'll be a discount offer I can use some of the gold coins up on.
If it was actually personalised to give offers on games you don't have it would be great but right now, compared with Club Nintendo and the Wii U premium points, you get less reward for buying more games!

@AJWolfTill
That’s only for Switch 2 games that support it, given how little used Download Play was I don’t expect it’ll be many.
