Re: Mini Review: Rush Rally Origins - An Easygoing, Accessible Rallying Remake

Brownmonster

Thanks for the review, on the whole pretty solid and the screenshots look nice, It sounds like you really enjoyed the game!

Just to clarify:

`Even at its highest graphical setting, however, Rush Rally Origins still makes some pretty severe compromises.`

  • This review refers to the particles in a race with 5 other cars on track. This is fixed in a patch currently in LotCheck, (soon to be released). This essentially balances the particles across all racers to ensure that it delivers a smooth 60fps @ 1080p during the race, and looks more balanced, I'm not sure i'd call it a severe compromise though, but it was what was necessary to keep the gameplay at 60fps.
  • We believe that a good racing game has to run at a smooth 60fps.
  • Small details too - have you noticed how you can smash the cars up and that they take visual damage?!

`Once you've mastered the controls, the rest of the experience can feel a bit repetitive`

  • Each car should feel and handle differently, especially when you upgrade them to different classes, When you upgrade the cars to A class they are extremely hard to tame on these narrow roads!

`easygoing arcade driving experience.`

  • This is the first time anyone has called Rush Rally easygoing! We tried to make it pick up and play whilst keeping that real physical feel to the cars, a balance between sim and arcade feel.

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for taking the time to play it!

Re: Art Of Rally Power Slides Onto Switch Very Soon

Brownmonster

@twztid13 Thanks! So I'm all about making "proper" games regardless of what device they are on, I can't stand the classic "mobile like" experiences that you speak of either! With Rush Rally I tried to prove that full racing games can work on mobiles and tablet, and succeeded, Both Rush Rally 3 and Rush Rally Origins are also suited to the Switch, I've just chosen to keep them priced the same as I don't believe in hiking the price just because it is on a console! Anyway give Origins a blast when it comes out and I'd be keen to hear what you think!

Hopefully Nintendo Life will have a preview/review of Rush Rally Origins some time soon

Best leave this thread to Art of Rally stuff now, I don't want to steal their promotion time from them here

Re: Art Of Rally Power Slides Onto Switch Very Soon

Brownmonster

@olut Thanks, Of course I don't mind! I'm not sure what is next to be honest, there are lots of ideas being thrown about!

If you like RR3, certainly pick up Rush Rally Origins, it is slightly more arcade like, but still has that Rush Rally 3 feel!

Re: Art Of Rally Power Slides Onto Switch Very Soon

Brownmonster

@twztid13 I'm releasing Rush Rally Origins on Switch on the 19th August at $6.99. Are you saying the cheap price tag puts you off buying it, even though all the RR series have such good praise? I've basically priced it exactly the same as the mobile version because I believe it is unfair to hike the price on switch because it is a "proper console" when it is exactly the same game!!! I want people to have a great priced premium product whatever their device!!

Re: Rush Rally Origins Brings More Top Down Racing Action To Switch eShop This Year

Brownmonster

@SpringDivorce `Sonic Transformed is one of the best Kart racers of all time`

  • Other than the Rush Rally series, Sonic Transformed is one of the only games I've played a lot of after spending hours making it, in fact my kids love playing it, and I worked on it before they were born! One of my favourites games to work on too, having the chance to basically create 3 completely different physics models form scratch in one game was great fun.
  • I keep toying with the idea of making a Rush game on water too...

Re: Rush Rally Origins Brings More Top Down Racing Action To Switch eShop This Year

Brownmonster

@Ghost_of_Hasashi - 'These are the kind of games that are good to watch, just not good to play but that's just me.'

  • This has been my exact thought for the last 15 years, This one shouldn't disappoint, the handling will be like nothing you have experienced before from this camera view, this has basically been my dream from day 1 of the Rush Rally series, to create a top down racer that is as good as those from the 8/16 bit days.

Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

Brownmonster

@Emceehamster thanks! This is my point, it has all the effects you'd expect at 1080p at 60fps, saying it is gamecube level is pretty much the only thing I disagree with on the review (for starters this looks better than any WiiU game too which was the last gen, and some developers don't even attempt 1080p with AA! ) , the game is jam packed with content! Anyway glad you all are enjoying it, I'll be updating it more in the new year!! Thanks!

Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

Brownmonster

Thanks again all, it seems most of you realise the quality of this game!

@sixrings, not at all, I'm saying you need to realise that the graphics are not everything in a game and that having a 60fps racer with blur/vegetation/trees/shadows/great physics/deformation/weather/etc all at real-time is a rarity, and here you have one. Most other developers go for graphics and end up with a mess of game it seems, the switch is a low end device and devs get themselves in a pickle trying to push it with stuff it cannot do!! The reason grid looks so good is because it is pretty simple when you look at it, doesn't need 100s of trees next to the track all casting shadows etc etc!!!

I guess I'm saying they are not really comparable, and the ones that are (wrc8 and vrally4) I'll let you be the judge!

Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

Brownmonster

@SuperWeird it's not really as bad as gamecube level, I think they are exaggerating which is a bit unfair! It looks pretty neat, but I think they elude to the fact it may be missing the AAA effects! (it has real time reflections at 60hz!!)

(Remember that modern mobile is also much more powerful than a switch which is 6 year old mobile technology underneath too!)

Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

Brownmonster

@ToneDeath thanks, I actually wanted it out about a month ago but it slipped as it failed a few things at Nintendo that I needed to fix!

My next plan is more tracks and more cars coming in the first quarter of 2020 I've just started the update pack!

I have to say I agree with you on v rally (I also find the same with wrc). I'd rather have a consistent looking and performing game, than something that just mutates as you play it!!

Once you get to the R class in this game, I think it is just 100 percent fun!!

Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

Brownmonster

@ChromaticDracula thanks! Goto the options - game and then set difficultly to extreme! You'll hopefully find it a challenge! On the default "dynamic" difficulty it balances based on your skill! I think as you play it, you'll realise it is frantic when you play with R class cars and the graphics will zoom past!! The main issue rally games have is 100's of trees and shadowing with them, which other games don't have to render! (grid has lots of run off etc etc so can spend render time on nice crowds instead!)

Re: Review: Rush Rally 3 - A Cheap And Cheerful Rally Racer

Brownmonster

Great review, yes the graphics are missing the "smoke and mirrors" but what other games have real-time reflections and mirrors whilst playing at 60fps @ 1080p with rain/lightning, headlights, deformation all going at once! I tried to make the feeling of speed and overall feel/experience the best it can be, which I haven't had from any other racer yet! Wrc 8 may have more pretty stuff but the look to me is terrible, it still ends up dropping frames and resolution and doesn't even attempt mirror/reflections!

Completely agree about menu navigation, I'll be working on this in the new year!

Re: Looks Like We'll Be Getting A Switch Version Of Rush Rally 3 By Christmas

Brownmonster

I would agree that the others racing games seem half-baked (with the exception of Grid, which is good , however for me I've never enjoyed the feel of the cars in Grid, it looks nicer than it plays!).

I spent a lot of time making Rush Rally feel and play how I would expect a racer to play, 99% of people seem to love it on the other platforms, but there are a few who just don't get it and constantly say "Colin McRae is better etc etc", I used to love Colin McRae but since playing it again recently, it really has not aged well, and the handling is awful!

I have also spent a lot of time trying to replicate the feel of speed, this game draws ALOT of trees, and with trees come nice shadows on the road. Rallying is all about having lots of close stuff fly past, because of this, I'd say my environments are not as "polished" as the likes of Grid, but then they don't have to draw 1000's trees at a time! One thing with VRally that winds me up is the look of the shadow on the road, you can see where it is drawing all time!

Re: Looks Like We'll Be Getting A Switch Version Of Rush Rally 3 By Christmas

Brownmonster

@sixrings Well that is a question, the Switch is quite old tech compared to the iPad Pro so I'm not sure you can compare them! However FYI I've set it up so you can configure tv mode and handheld mode with different graphics options. tv mode supports 1080p @ 60hz with pretty much everything maxed out just like the iPad pro (including anti-aliasing), handheld is 720p @ 60hz with a few options lowered. Of course if you want handheld to be less graphics to save battery that is an option too!

Re: Looks Like We'll Be Getting A Switch Version Of Rush Rally 3 By Christmas

Brownmonster

@sixrings OK so the reply is that Switch to Switch LAN comunication is actually OK without internet, but I would have to do some trickery to support this method! Basically supporting other platforms is a security risk so I have to verify the users over the internet to pass their requirements. I'll put it on my todo list anyway if it is important to you!

Re: Looks Like We'll Be Getting A Switch Version Of Rush Rally 3 By Christmas

Brownmonster

@sixrings All I know is that I needed to get official Nintendo approval for wireless LAN play. It is probably because I allow communication with other devices other than Switch, which is why I had to conform to this requirement. I can probably patch it at a later date to allow LAN play with Switch to Switch without the internet, I'll send them an email anyway and ask!

Re: Looks Like We'll Be Getting A Switch Version Of Rush Rally 3 By Christmas

Brownmonster

Hey all,

I'll try and clear a few things up for you to help you all out.

I've written tech for other companies and worked on games such as F1/Dirt/MotoGP and event F1 motions simulators for an F1 team. My aim has always been to make this one of the best rally sims available for handheld devices. If you do a little research you'll already find that this game has been praised for its controls across the globe, as have some of my other games for other companies!

Controls are FULLY remappable, so you can setup an analogue stick accelerator if you like.

This game is not easy, it is a full sim, you will need to brake for corners, this is not an arcade thrash racer. Every track has a leaderboard and your best ghost is uploaded to the leaderboards, you can race against against any other persons ghost to try and beat them.

I've spent 9 years to date on this title, it has always been about how the game plays, so if it doesn't play well for you, I will want to know why!!

[Oh and it already has put some AAA devs to shame on other platforms ]
