I like both covers, but had to go with the NA one for an important reason. With Megaman 3 for the NES finally opting for more accurate Japanese anime style box art, Megaman X continued that trend. This was notable at a time when anime, manga etc wasn't as common. 😎
Despite the Westernized cover with the first game, it at least retained the anime style art in the graphics, as well as the map & instruction manual at a time when the anime aesthetic was so often changed or removed. (Back then we learned to take what we could get!)
While the box art on the first two Megaman games were completely Westernized, the "third time's the charm" as they say, as Megaman 3, (along with Final Fantasy III for that matter,) featured a more Japanese anime aesthetic back when it wasn't as common as today. 😎
As someone who was there when the SNES version came out, the U.S. box art was actually a huge win for us, as it retained a distinctive Japanese anime art style at a time when it was common to Westernize everything. (The instruction manual is also notable for including a plethora of Amano's art, including the original cover.)
