I didn’t know that this would be the (probably) last trace of them. I was a huge fan of the Mario & Luigi series. This just seems like an underwhelming send-off. No offense to people that are into the Mario & Sonic Olympics series.

@TheBigK You may as well just buy it ASAP at its current price, or used if you have to, because 1st party Nintendo games hardly ever go on sale, at least in my experience. It may also become really rare in the future.

I still regularly play all 4 Mario & Luigi titles released for the system, mostly. But the updates have made the 3ds so stable that it could replace the infinity gauntlet.

The 3ds is incredible and I wouldn't even mind if they still made new games for it. (Though this seems unlikely now.) As for the Switch, I really want Mario & Luigi and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon to make it on that system. That would be a dream come true for me because those are my favorite series' ever.

@MrPokemon907 Are you saying that this remake has some sort of subliminal real world message in it? I find that really hard to believe! Although I would be interested to hear that theory you seem to have. This is the first time I've seen anyone try to link M&L to the real world.

Its been ages since this article was posted, but for anyone who finds this comment, this issue has since been fixed with another update to the game. I was browsing the eshop when I discovered the patch so I thought I would share it here.

@zool You could be entirely right, we'll just have to wait and see. For now, i'm happy with the idea of the hybrid, though I do prefer dedicated handhelds.

That's just the thing. The 3d WAS just a gimmick, and I believe this hybrid stuff with the Switch may end up like that as well. 3d was never meant to be the "future", just an enticement for people to buy the new DS system. You got your hopes up for nothing. The hybrid situation, however, is a more feasible "future" route.

Mario & Luigi would be successful on the switch without a doubt. Paper Mario, not as much considering the last two games, unless it’s like the first two. Those people can just use it as a portable device so there is no reason for them to be complaining. Hybrid consoles are the future, not 3D consoles.

Nobody I know actually cares about the 3D feature. Nintendo cannot win, because there is a crowd that complains about 3D being a gimmick, and an equally big other crowd who complains about the lack of said 3D in games.

I would not mind seeing M&L continue on the Switch. It still counts as a handheld console. I hope that Nintendo never releases a dedicated 3ds successor, as that would defeat the purpose of the Switch entirely. If Nintendo kills the 3ds, they need to dedicate themselves to one hybrid platform.

Factually, it's correct that this game (and many other game)'s failure to perform well is due to the 3ds' declining status. However, in the case of this game specifically, that attitude that its not worth the purchase because the original can be played on the 3ds knocked it down an EXTRA peg. If everyone who didn't buy it for that reason were to purchase it, the game's numbers would have looked much, much healthier. SSDX did not have this problem. Personally, I think its worth rebuying. Its got that awesome new Bowser Jr story content, and updated and improved graphics and sound plus a few other things. Do you not care about any of that?

I recommend that everyone report this issue to Nintendo until they fix it. Since this is so minor compared to the other one, it will be more likely to fly under the radar. We need the music player fixed!

How was this able to outsell Mario & Luigi: Bowser Jr's Journey + Bowser Jr's Journey!? Is it because the original was playable on the 3ds as well? That said, I have nothing against this game, in fact I may buy it someday.

Not to be THAT guy, but you guys seem ignorant of the good things this remake has to offer. By not supporting it, the whole series could be killed and we would never see a M&L game again.

What? Superstar Saga DX has the same graphical level and style and that game runs at 60 fps. Who cares if BiSDX doesn't? Dream Team and Paper Jam ran at 30 fps and they look great!

I certainly don't! I would not have bought any Paper Mario remakes. I think that Mario & Luigi is the far superior series. I am severely disappointed about how overlooked and underrated M&L is, so when people dismiss this remake it makes the series' future look rather bleak.

I got uneasy when I read "nothing has been planned". I hope that just means "we aren't allowed to say that we are so we're just being quiet." I don't want the 3ds to take this series with it when it finally dies. Other than that, this is a solid remake and a cool interview.

The game itself looks like a solid port. My only complaint is that it lacks multiplayer. My buddy is hardcore into Kirby and I was thinking about getting it just to play it with him. Looks like I won't be able to do that now.

That's a cool backstory for a clone character created for a co-op mode! I had a blast playing co-op mode in Luigi's Mansion 3ds with my friend and using gooigi.

@electrolite77 Fair enough, but you already have two Nintendo consoles plus that 2ds, so adding in some more 3ds games to that mix doesn't seem like it would change up the time you divide between them so much.

@oninowon I agree that it would have been cool for Alphadream to include the 3d feature, but they did not do it because that would have required them to restructure the game so that the inside bowser sections and overworld sections could both make use of it. I don't know how well that would have worked out for them or the fans' reception of the game.

I am a super-fan of this series and I am here to defend this game, because I genuinely believe it deserves some more love. I am absolutely glad that I purchased this remake. The comments on this article are troubling me. Fair warning, the rest of this comment is LONG:

I don't think it is fair to call the graphics of the 3ds remake "bad" just because it's not the original. Its true that the original has that certain charm that's been brewing for 10 years because many of us played it as young kids. It's a very cartoony and goofy looking experience. However, I think that those things make it the perfect recipe for some particularly powerful nostalgia that skews people's current perceptions, because the remake is the objectively better looking of the two versions and there is no other reason to say that the original "looks better". The remake gets rid of those black outlines around everything, makes the environments more realistic and colorful, and there is now shading that adds more depth. The environments themselves are now more detailed, (for example, Bumpsy Plains now actually having visible grass instead of a sea of yellowy green, and Bowser's insides now have floating cells and microorganisms). I concede that the frame rate and a few sound effects were made less enjoyable, though. But those aren't deal breakers by any means. What ISN'T to love about this new look? There is no need for such a mawkish attachment to the original.

Next, some people think this game should have been on the Switch instead. It would undoubtedly sell millions, but would you guys really be happy with how they would have to fundamentally redesign the game for that to happen? The game makes constant use of both screens, touch controls, and mic controls (in the original). It would hardly look or feel like the same BiS we all know and love. At least on the 3ds, it can retain the same classic feeling and look. If people aren't happy with the small changes made on the 3ds, why would you be any more satisfied with a flat out renovation? They might as well make a brand new M&L installment for the Switch instead. So what if the original is playable on the 3ds? That shouldn't be a deterrent to people who have genuine interest in this game. If you want it, get it! It's not the end of the world if you have to bust out your older hardware for another game.

I seriously doubt that the people who wanted Partners in Time to be remade would be any happier if that DID happen instead of BiS. The same complaints would be here: "The original is playable on the ds already!" "Why isn't this on the Switch?" "The original is way better!" The results would have been the exact same, possibly even worse since PiT wasn't well received compared to other M&L games to begin with. The recent mawkish attitude towards that game is due to nostalgia as well, not that I hate PiT, I love all M&L games.

The Bowser Jr's Journey portion is not terrible at all. Its story is amazing and it's full of memorable moments. What a shame that people are overlooking it. Dieter's quotes are the best. "It'll only alter 97% of your DNA." But really, it's got genuine character development for the Koopalings and junior and it actually has a moral.

Overall, I had a very fun time with this remake and it's such a shame about how it's got all these factors working against it. It looks and plays phenomenally, and I daresay the definitive version of BiS. It will be underrated forever and I SERIOUSLY hope that haters don't kill the series by not buying these games. On Nintendo's end, someone over there better understand that it's not "Mario & Luigi" that people aren't interested in anymore, it's the 3ds, and that the series should continue on the Switch to boost sales again. It felt good to get this off my chest, thanks if you read the whole thing!
