Pokémon GO and Pikmin Bloom developer Niantic has issued a notice about "in-game currency prices" increasing in select regions around the globe, starting on October 5th.
In a post on its official website, Niantic mentioned how it wanted to be "proactive" with the pricing notice and explained how it was "due to changes in App Store price tiers". Similar changes will also apparently be made on other mobile platforms.
Here's the full list of countries and regions affected (via Niantic's website):
- Territories that use the Euro currency
- Chile
- Egypt
- Japan
- Malaysia
- Pakistan
- Poland
- South Korea
- Sweden
- Vietnam
Niantic won't be taking "immediate action" in response to these changes, but will instead monitor the impact and then navigate these "changing conditions" globally.

I'd ask who pays for stuff in Pokemon Go, but I know they exist. Like those who pay for JPEGs in FE Heroes.

😮💨I used to pay 79p for 100 Poké-Balls but since one of the earlier updates, you get so much Items from a Poké-Stop plus the Free Daily Items, there's no need to as you'll never run out.
@Saban Agreed, I’ve never paid for anything in GO (unless you count the GO Plus accessory), but Poké Balls are actually a huge pain for me. I use Great & Ultra Balls almost exclusively, I’m having to constantly discard Poké Balls.
Can we go back to where everything was like less than $50? The cost of food is ridiculous nowadays both in groceries and fast food. What happened to the 2010 prices of everything
I've been playing since 2018, and I've not spent more than about $12 total in the years I've played.
Since 2020, Pokémon Go has definitely been easier to play for free, so this move is probably to offset the cost of that. And I'm mostly fine with that.
Eh. I've stopped playing the game anyway.
This is happening with pretty much most big mobile games with in-app purchases. At least on Apple for the time being due to the currencies fluctuating.
@Markiemania95 I hate discarding Poké-Balls as its a waste buy I don't wanna constantly pay to upgrade my Bag.
It ridiculous when I have over 1000 Poké-Balls...
Paying for a permanent upgrade for storage and the like is fair enough, but paying for one-time use items is absurd.
I paid to max out my storage shortly after the game was released, but I don't think I've played Pokémon GO since trying to transfer Meltan and Melmetal to the Let's Go games close to four years ago (sheesh! it's been that long already!).
@Browny I spent $5. If I enjoy a game enough, I'll drop money on it, at the very least to show my support.
Ah yes because those digital goods are having a shortage...oh wait..they're infinite and don't take up any real world space/time to create.
@Saban It’s not a waste if they’re like oxygen to me haha, I literally cannot be rid of them. I’m Level 40 and still only have 350 item slots - imo, it’s a waste of bag space to have them take up an entire third of 1650 slots.
Niantic's phrasing was a little unclear, but it sounds like they're only increasing the cost of money to buy in-game currency.
They also sell tickets that can't be bought with in-game currency, like Go Fest tickets or community day special research.
Additionally, they've never increased the price of individual in-game items bought with the in-game currency, but they have increased the price of some bundles, and more recently the boxes they sell have drastically reduced in value, offering virtually no saving to the player whilst bundling in items people deliberately avoid buying because they are readily available through standard gameplay.

I often have opportunities to farm items using my Go Plus accessory, so when I run low on space I have to discard Poké Balls, as it makes way for higher grade items.
That said, did you know that Meltan that spawn from the mystery box have a 0% flee rate? That makes them a great way to burn off excess Poké Balls whilst you spend an hour watching video or something.
Never understood hiking up prices for EXISTING (in capital letters for people that try to ignore what I mean) digital items.
Sure a newly created item or a game I do understand, but they do this here because they can and not because they have too. (because they want to keep their sky high profits)
Guys I don’t think you get how serious this is. They will only make 5 billion a year instead of 10 billion. How else are these guys going to buy their 17th private jet.
Basically they increase the pricing because Apple increases the App Store prices in these regions (because of taxes and a weak € to $ conversion rate)
Me who has played since 2019, is level 30 and has never bought a single poke coin.
