After the launch of Wave 1 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass, everyone and their nan turned their attention towards Wave 2; specifically, when on earth it would be coming out. Excitment reached fever pitch (just check out the comments section of any Mario Kart Tour related content if you don't believe us!), so naturally, expectations for the latest batch of courses are exceedingly high. Was it all worth it, though? Let's find out.
With the addition of Wave 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has now gained a total of sixteen new tracks so far in 2022. Just let that sink in for a moment: sixteen new tracks. It's a five-year-old game, for goodness sake. Eight, if you count the original Wii U release! We've tried to keep this figure in mind when playing through these new courses and really look at the bigger picture here, because the new tracks on offer in the Turnip Cup and the Propeller Cup are a mixed bag, to say the least.
Starting with the Turnip Cup, the game kicks off in New York Minute, a Mario Kart Tour track. It's a visually pleasing feast, with colours bursting from every corner of the track, but it's a pretty safe start to proceedings. The track forces you down alternate routes as you round each lap, but there's little in the way of obstacles or threats; it's a bit bland, all told.
We then move on to Mario Circuit 3 and Kalimari Desert, from the SNES and N64 respectively. The nostalgia in these tracks is strong; particularly with Mario Circuit 3, where the music practically transports us back to 1992. Again, however, much like in Wave 1, these two tracks have been painstakingly recreated for Mario Kart 8. If you're after a faithful nod to the originals, you'll be more than happy here, but for anyone looking for a new twist or some added surprises, Wave 2 plays it by the book and doesn't deviate from the original designs. We do love the train on Kalimari Desert though; that's cool.
Lastly, Waluigi Pinball is the star of the show for the Turnip Cup by a country mile. It's as fun as it ever was on the DS, with the track's verticality and the addition of multiple obstacles marking a stark contrast to the previous three courses. It also happens to look stunning, particularly on the Switch OLED. The vivid purples and pinks bring the course to life in a way that simply couldn't have been accomplished on the DS.
Moving onto the Propeller Cup, the tracks here are decidedly more appealing than the Turnip Cup. Starting off with Sydney Sprint, this is the second track from Mario Kart Tour, and it fairs a bit better than New York Minute with tight roads and potential water hazards that add a touch of danger to the mix. The routes change once again as you go around each lap, and honestly, the more we see this in practice, the more we'd love to see it as a mainstay feature in Mario Kart.
Snow Land and Mushroom Gorge are the Propeller Cup's "retro" offerings, from the GBA and Wii respectively. Snow Land looks positively gorgeous, with excellent ice effects utilised throughout. Plus, we can't help but love those adorable penguins sliding around. Mushroom Gorge is hands down probably the most welcome addition to the Propeller Cup; it's one of few new tracks that we're glad didn't stray far from the original track design. You can't fix what isn't broken, after all.
Last but not least is Sky-High Sundae, the first brand new track to feature in the Booster Course Pass, and it's... fine? It's fine. Visually, it kind of looks like it's been ripped straight out of a Fall Guys level, with ice cream and chocolate sauce adorning the landscape for miles. In terms of the actual layout, however, it's sort of similar to Baby Park, just without the chaotic confinement. In short, it's quite basic, with lots of style but little substance. It's a shame because the track is the only one of the bunch to make use of the anti-gravity feature, but it just doesn't feel like an anti-gravity track.
Presentation is, as expected, pretty great across the board. Audio remains absolutely stellar, with music that taps into our nostalgia along with new tracks that sound like they're straight out of a Pixar movie. Visually, the new courses mostly look excellent, but again lack some of the finer details you'd expect to see in a game like Mario Kart 8, with some flat, basic textures present in all of the courses.
Conclusion
Ultimately, Wave 2 Of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe doesn't quite knock it out of the park. We know we've been bashing these courses left, right, and centre, but when it comes to Mario Kart, we have pretty high standards, you know. However, none of the tracks on offer are straight-up bad; most of them just feel like "b-side" filler when compared to the main tracks created specifically for Mario Kart 8. There's still a great deal of fun to be had here, particularly when you crank up the difficulty to 200cc. We have to keep reminding ourselves of the bigger picture, too; we've now got sixteen new courses for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and we're not even halfway through yet. We've still got a ways to go.

Downloaded, played and thoroughly enjoyed, great set of tracks and IMO nice one Nintendo (I would say 8 out of 10). Today has been a great day as my physical copy of TMNT SR arrived finally aswell! Game on! Looking forward to the Cowabunga Collection now and maybe at some point in the future somebody making a Star Wars Collection with NES Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back as well as the SNES versions of SW, ESB AND ROTJ. Maybe one day hopefully??!!
Jeez a 6/10? They gave wave 1, which is arguably worse, a 7, I don’t understand this site sometimes LOL.
I completely disagree lol. At this point starts to feel more like nintendolife is just giving it an even worse score just due to graphics. Every track (besides maybe mario circuit) is an absolute thrill and some of my new favs in the entire game
Hahaha, this reviewer is so spoiled or really has a grudge against tour’s style. It’s a very welcome free addition. Never underestimate waluigi.
Haven't gotten around to playing it myself, but with MK8D's DLC as a whole, it's the definition of 'it could be better but I don't think I'm in the position to complain'. It's an entire new game's worth of tracks, they're coming from all over the series including Tour and I get it all for FREE with NSO EP. Could it be better? Yes absolutely, there's not question in that. But as long as it's still fun, that's all that matters to me.
Can't wait to play on Mushroom Gorge and the Tour tracks though.
Deserves at least an 8/10, lol. it is a drastic upgrade to wave 1. (plus they fixed the cars in coconut mall!)
@Zeldawakening it um... isn't free
6/10?!? Did someone take a grumpy pill? 😉 Personally I’d say it’s definitely a stronger selection of tracks than wave 1. I’d probably score it 8/10 (7/10 for wave 1).
@PARK1755 They gave a lot of infamous games like paper mario; sticker star and metroid: other M good review scores
It seems weird to hang older courses for not being better than the newer mario kart 8 courses even though the point is just to play these older courses (and whatever is from Tour)...I know reviews are subjective and that's why I rarely comment on them but many of these courses are fan favorites...so the score seems out of place. Especially as it seems like the reviewer has some expectation that the courses would be altered to match MK8 rather than being retro revisits with new paint as they have been in previous entries.
@NikHogan It is if you have the Switch Online expansion.
6/10?!
Gettouta here!
This an 8/10. You guys are ridiculous
Just pick a number out of a hat and make a review based on that rather than the actual game.
I'm sorry, but in what world is this a 6? I've not seen a single major complaint about this wave from anyone and plenty of people who are saying they are very well designed and a lot of fun. What more could you want?
Personally, I really enjoyed playing on all the courses and thought Sky-High Sundae was a really fun and unique course that felt fast-paced. I'm also really happy with the updates to Kalimari Desert, which I didn't like too much in MK7, but is much better now with the routes from MK Tour.
Overall, my ranking is:
1. Mushroom Gorge
2. Waluigi Pinball
3. Sky-High Sundae
4. Sydney Sprint
5. New York Minute
6. Snow Land
7. Kalimari Desert
8. Mario Circuit 3
The top 4 are all very close together, so even with Sydney Sprint 4th, I really enjoyed it. It feels like a really bright and colourful track with a lot of variation in the different laps that make it a very interesting track to play on.
@Pk-glitch what do you expect, they’re game journalists.
@NikHogan Did not know about this fix, thanks!
@NikHogan just checked it after reading this, the cars are still static
In a way it's like the Smash fighters passes, some stuff I'm not going to like, but it's more stuff to mess around with so whatever. It was like that with Smash, tons of characters I just didn't like or care for, but whatever.
I do wish they would update these tracks for the Switch instead of just flat-out porting them from Tour, though.
EVERY TRACK IS HERE!! (almost)
6/10? Baloney. Easy 8, maybe even a 9. While yes, I did feel that Sky-High Sundae was disappointing, There were some GREAT tracks in this wave. Kalimari Desert! Waluigi Pinball! New York Minute! Sydney Sprint! Mario Circuit 3! Mushroom Gorge! While yes, Snow Land and Sky-High Sundae weren't the best, that's only 25% of the tracks. Overall, a much better wave than Wave One.
6 is a little low, wave 2 is a major improvement over the last. Waluigi pinball is, of course, the highlight (I personally think Mushroom Gorge is a highly overrated track) and graphically it's a slight improvement, the new course is a bit basic but it's far from terrible. I'd give this wave a 7.5 personally
Love the DLC. They even went and fixed the cars on Coconut Mall.
My only real disagreement is that Kalimari Desert doesn't deviate from the original design. Maybe that's the case for people who didn't play Tour, but compared to its last iteration in Mario Kart 7, this is a significantly different track due to the lap-by-lap adjustments to the circuit.
The most important question is can you drive all the way through the tunnel in kalimari desert?
@HaroGenkide has to be grand prix, not time trials
Oof. What's with the score?
This rated lower than Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2?
I'd bet my bottom dollar (and my bottom) that this would be a lot more fun and satisfying than Nick Kart any day of the week.
It's a marginal improvement over Wave 1, and generally fun because Mario Kart 8 is fun, but for me it's things like the static cars and trucks in New York Minute and lack of anti-grav (except for one course) and just the simplistic art style that make these tracks feel kinda lifeless.
My hope is that Nintendo are in full development of a true sequel and these are just stop-gaps to fill the time.
I'm glad other folks are enjoying them though, and the surprise in Kalimari Desert put a smile on my face. Also, the music for these DLC courses has been awesome!
@Silly_G Oh my friend, folks have to stop assuming we compare every racing game when writing a review. Not once did Nickelodeon Racers 2 enter my mind!
this should be an easy 8, the tracks are fantastic and varied enough to keep things interesting from track to track
A low score to drum up controversy and clicks! I demand immediate retribution for my shattered world view!
Not sure why it's getting a review score at all. It's DLC. Not even all the DLC. Just one sixth! Maybe a score can be justified after all six waves have arrived? Meantime, all you can really say is - is it better than wave 1? Is it better than the existing MK8 tracks? Yes or no.
@Olliemar28 No, but ya'll need the clicks I suppose.
Seems like an oddly low score.
People are way too hard on these courses. They look and play great.
How has Kalimari Desert been “painstakingly recreated” when the third lap is brand new and completely different?
Did you even play what you are reviewing?
I am glad to see more MK8 content and that courses from Tour which I wouldn't play otherwise are made available, however it's disappointing that the anti-gravity feature which is the main feature of MK8 is not supported on most of these tracks.
@norwichred
That was the part that stood out to me that kinda just shows they are talking nonsense. They are factually wrong that Kalimari Desert has been painstakingly recreated.
They can have whatever opinions they like, even if we think they are being harsh, but when they are getting facts wrong, something is clearly wrong with the review.
@Olliemar28 : I know, I know.
But you know how we love to nitpick (and pick nits).
"The poor tracks outweight the great for Wave 2"
Which poor tracks? I think every single track in that DLC is better than Tokyo Blur and Toad Circuit
It's an easy 8 for me, loved the new tracks
For me Mario Circuit 3 and Snow Land were the most fun to actully race trough (at least after playing both cups once). But yeah I get it's unnecessary filler with little killer.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@mariomaster96 That's great! Our opinions differ, I'm really glad you're enjoying it so much.
Hard disagree with you on this one, NintendoLife. I actually had a blast with the Tour courses, Sky-High Sundae was a delight, and the new take on Kalimari Desert was most welcome for what was really a standard course with great aesthetic. The only course that was a letdown in any degree was Mario Circuit 3, but it still succeeds in being a faithful recreation, which many players would want. I'm firmly in the 8/10 camp for this set.
This wave really is fine overall. Of course Waluigi Pinball is the best, but I actually think Snow Land and Kalimari Desert are my other highlights. Snow Land’s cheerful music perfectly translates to today’s remake. I guess Kalimari Desert’s twist on the second lap comes from Tour, but I thought that was really neat. Sky-High Sundae gives me roller coaster vibes. These tracks would look and feel so much better if the graphics were as good as the base game, especially the ones from Tour, but that’s just not going to happen. Ironically, the bland visuals actually reinforce SNES Mario Circuit 3’s nostalgia.
I'm just happy to have new Mario Kart content again. It's been rough going for those of us waiting for a new game since the Wii U.
@NikHogan thanks! I went into time trials first thing haha
@NikHogan They're "free" to those that haven't purchased the pack through the rotation of online play.
In fairness, it's difficult to assess a piece of content when it's part of a larger whole. Perhaps this crop of tracks is underwhelming, but their value will be bolstered by additional waves that have yet to release. So to my mind, the review reflects the state of the booster pack as it currently is.
Is it me or do Nintendolife seem to be down on a lot of Nintendo games lately? Sports, MK8 dlc, Splatoon 3 etc....
I really like Sky-High Sundae.
I totally disagree. These tracks are much better than phase 1. I really like to new track too. I don't know why you compare it to Baby Park. This one is longer and had different ways to go.
The only complaint I have,though miniscule, is waluigi's pinball course. The issue being that the little sound bite doesn't play as you're nearing the line. I don't know how to describe it other than that little sound you'd get as if you lost a ball playing actual pinball. It was slightly jarring to me not hearing that as I entered the tunnel,but again,just a miniscule issue.
@presenttense
It seems if it isn't exactly what they are looking for, they arent happy with it.
It is what I said about Nintendo Switch Sports. They weren't reviewing Nintendo Switch Sports, but rather comparing it with a game that doesn't exist.
Nintendo Switch Sports is meant to be a simple sports game that the entire family can play, yet Nintendo Like kept going on about it being too simple despite that being the point. It's as if they wanted Fifa level of complexity for all the sports. They didn't care about actually reviewing how the game is, but rather essentially demanding a completely different game they wished existed.
@lighteningbolt79
I totally agree with you!
@DiggleDog Boom! Nailed it.
@Ryu_Niiyama Nah, that's absolutely a fair criticism. Usually Retro courses ARE updated to match the new game. They're recreated in the new game's graphic engine, and the layout is tweaked to update it with the new game's mechanics (i.e. you'll see trick ramps, gliding sections, underwater, antigrav, etc. added to the remakes). This is just lazily copy/pasting from Tour, no attempt to match MK8's graphical style or add in antigrav which does not exist in Tour, so it just feels out of place. You can really tell that the Booster Course pack is just lazy filler because they don't feel like giving us a legit console sequel to 8.
@Bolt_Strike
Just because something isn't in the same style as in the base game doesn't make it lazy. Changes have been made between Tour and DLC. If they were lazy, they wouldn't have made those changes.
@Fizza Nothing you pay for is free. It is included with your subscription.
It's more Mario Kart and free with the full membership. What's not to like 😊 I welcome this and the update to Coconut Mall was a nice touch.
@lighteningbolt79 They're incredibly minor and do little to really bring the courses up to MK8's standards. I would still call that lazy.
@Res462 It's all down to the reason you get NSO EP I suppose. The main reason I got it was just so I could play N64 and Mega Drive games for the very first time and MK DLC being added onto it was icing on the cake. To me it's free, even if it objectively isn't.
@Bolt_Strike
And I would say this kind of demanding behaviour is entitled, but each to their own.
Not every game or every part of a game will be how you like it. That doesn't make something lazy. If it were in the same style as the rest of the game, the developers would need to put in even more time which would put pressure on them to release it by the end of 2023 so either they are overworked or the DLC is delayed. More work likely means the DLC becomes more expensive which many people probably wouldn't want to pay for, even if they are "better quality".
To cut a long story short, these decisions are a lot more complex than just "it is in a different style so it must be lazy".
Man, this review is downright terrible. It isn't even particularly negative, but then turns around and slaps a 6/10 on the wave? Talks about tracks being especially faithful in the paragraph about KALIMARI DESERT, the single most overhauled course so far? Neglects to mention the genuine visual improvements over wave 1 with more textures being replaced? Doesn't even get into the details on all the cool changes they've made, like overhauling the cave in Mushroom Gorge to combine the Wii and 7 layouts and bringing back the shortcut at the beginning from Wii? It's not a perfect wave, don't get me wrong (some questionable changes in the city tracks, SNES Mario Circuit 3 being here when it's really similar to Snow Land's layout, weaker lineup of remixes compared to wave 1), but it's a step-up, and the general consensus I've been seeing is that it's much better too
I LOVE wave 2 tracks. me and my wife played 4(four) 8-tracks tournaments together. Only the new tracks. Wave 2 > wave 1.
There are more "events" along these tracks. These tracks are not monotonous.
10/10 here. All of them = super competitive tracks.
Congrats Nintendo!
@PARK1755 that is NL reviews in a nutshell. Don’t take them at face value especially their arbitrary scoring standards that might as well be pulling a random number out of a hat.
@PARK1755 Sometimes I don't either yet I still love it.
A 6/10 is far too low. Seeing Waluigi Pinball in HD, and this wave having the best versions of Mushroom Gorge and Kalimari Desert should be enough to propel it higher. Plus, Snow Land is finally fun. An easy 8/10, maybe 9/10.
@Bolt_Strike people throw lazy around way too easily. No other MK game has been extended like this and yes I am sure they source Tour for most of these tracks but that makes sense to use existing assets rather than starting over especially this late in the game’s lifecycle. And yes the retro courses have things from the current version such as ramps and coin placement. Expecting older courses to be antigrav without having been part of the original dev cycle (as that does take some design work) is a bit of an ask imo. So it isn’t a fair criticism because it doesn’t take into account development cycles or business logistics. Or rather how the real world works.
Have to agree. Downloaded the DLC earlier and as I was playing it I was like meh. I mean it's extra content but I've played these tracks before, I still have the original games they come from and like you say everything is by the book here. I'll forget all about this game again once Splatoon 3 comes out so at least it'll tie me over until then.
Wildly different from my preferences
@PikaPhantom Your opinion vs the Writer's opinion they're different who would have thought. That's the beauty of websites like this we can share our views without tearing each other to pieces or criticising others for having different opinions.
@lighteningbolt79 Well if I really had my way, the Booster Course pack would not have been the direction they went in for a filler title. More old courses is the last thing we need right now when we haven't had new content since 2014, better alternatives would've been a spinoff/side series of some kind (I'd like to see a Mario Kart take on Diddy Kong Racing or Forza Horizons) or a DLC pack that's actual new content (maybe something that's what Bowser's Fury is to Mario Kart, a minor expansion that gives us a glimpse into what a true next gen Mario Kart is like).
And I can't really excuse the Mario Kart team because their last game was 8D, which was 5 years ago. Usually we have a new entry every 3 years, so we should've had MK9 by 2020 (or in this case 2021 because of the pandemic). WTF have they been doing for the last 5 years? It can't have just been Tour and Home Circuit, Tour is mainly old content and a lot of it itself is ripped from 7 and Home Circuit was just lending assets to a TTL gimmick (and Velan Studios probably handled the bulk of the TTL side, and therefore the bulk of the development). It feels like they've just been twiddling their thumbs for the most part (I know that's not the reality, but it's what it feels like from the consumer side of things with their lack of output). I don't think it's entitled in the slightest to expect something more than just mobile ports when a content drought like this is very abnormal for the series and we'd have the next entry by now. Adapting the graphics and mechanics is the least they could've done if they insisted on recycling more old content.
@Bolt_Strike
And everything you just said boils down to "this isn't what I want". You can try to twist it into some sort of attack on the developers, but that isn't what you really saying. You aren't happy with this DLC, which is fine, but that doesn't mean the developers are lazy, no matter how much you want them to be.
@Ryu_Niiyama To be fair, who asked for it to be extended? Everyone wanted a new entry, not DLC. DLC is something we expect within a year or two of release, not after 5 years. And again, they seem to have done very little since the original release. Tour is a small project and a lot of MK7 rips itself. And Home Circuit was probably mainly handled by Velan. So I don't think it's a large ask to expect a more modern update of the Tour tracks if they've spent 3+ years on them.
@Bolt_Strike
Are you speaking for everyone now? Plenty of people wanted DLC. I am happy with DLC.
The world doesn't revolve around you, no matter how much you want it to. Not everyone agrees with you. You don't have a full and complete understanding of what is going on at Nintendo, so please, please, stop acting as if you are the expert and that you are speaking on behalf of everyone.
@lighteningbolt79 No, it boils down to "we've had little of substance from Mario Kart recently". We have not had a full entry in 5 years, and nothing we have received in that time looks like a full game's worth of work. Not Tour which is a mobile game with a lot of simplistic track designs and ports from MK7. Not Home Circuit which is a TTL gimmick that was probably mostly done by Velan. And not this DLC which mainly just looks like they copy/pasted Tour and did a few tweaks. We should have a full boxed retail game by now or at least an add on that doesn't just look like a copy/paste job from an older game.
@lighteningbolt79 Who did you see that, prior to the announcement of the Booster Course pack, said they wanted DLC? Because almost all of the people I saw that wanted more MK content said "I want MK9". And even now the vibe is more "meh... I'm okay with this" more than "this is what I wanted". That much I'll admit I'm in the minority, I'm less accepting of this than other fans, but as far as this being what people actually wanted and dreamed of us getting, I don't think that's an accurate assessment. The dream would be MK9.
@Bolt_Strike
So again, this boils down to "this isn't what I want" but you want to try to verify your opinion and make it more important.
Anyway, no point going around in circles. You aren't going to listen and I've had enough of listening to you making your opinion seem greater than it really is.
And there is no way to really gather how many people wanted DLC vs MK9. Some people wanted DLC and a lot of people are happy with the DLC we have. You might not be, but that doesn't matter.
Personally, if I don't like a game or TV show, rather than complain constantly, I just do something else because these companies aren't going to change/cancel the DLC just because I am not happy with it. Also, complaining constantly is never good for the people around you and tends to make them feel bad for liking it.
Lol I'm out of here the salt in this comment thread is quite ridiculous. One of the reasons I left this website before and I certainly don't want to leave again so instead my time here will be reduced. I miss the old days when people here were friendly and didn't tear each other to pieces.
@lighteningbolt79 It's not just about my opinion. It's about the quantity of content we've been getting and how it compares to past gaps between MK titles. That's objective, not subjective.
Wow a 6? Thats feels really harsh I like the tracks both wave 1 and 2 at least can say game and the additional tracks gives the game enhanced and its completed in comparison to say mario golf, mario battle league and mario party superstars now just have to wait for updates which feels like game is unfinished.
There is something special about that SNES track on the Switch, the mobile game has been hoarding it for too long.
@RubyCarbuncle,
I do kind of agree with you, but this wave does seem better to me, although I have been having a blast with the first wave.
I guess for people that have owned the original Wii U version, then bought it again for the Switch could feel a little jaded, but that's not the DLC's fault, just too familiar with the product, that's all.
I even got a little jaded when the second wave of DLC hit the original Wii U version, no issue just the way these things go, still my favorite Mario Kart racer of all time.
@Gamergirl94
I thought Mario Party Super Stars is fine, just needed one more board from Mario Party 3 and a Bowser board
@Bolt_Strike,
Everyone???, who do you mean.
The original game sold around 8 million copies on the Wii U, so for the majority of deluxe owners this was a brand new game for the Switch, so why would Nintendo not extend it, they did it for the Wii U's userbase, so why not the Switch, surely the latter is a far more compelling argument.
I totally get it from your point of view, like me you owned the Wii U version etc etc..... but we can't expect every one else to look at it the same way, or indeed feel the same.
@Ryu_Niiyama this is indeed very lazy. It’s like throwing a starving dog table scraps. The scraps might not be bad, but for f’s sake, the game is approaching ten years. These should have been released yeas ago and we should be eying a proper unique MK for the Switch.
That said, I still think the pricing and value for the new tracks was pretty decent. I think I have about 55 hours so far on my Switch version. I bet by the time we get all the tracks, I will have about 75-80 hours.
Wow, tell us how you really feel?
I appreciate the honest opinion on this wave. I haven't had a chance to try these out myself, but I imagine we're all so starved for new content in this game that anything new is going to be OMG THE BEST EVAR! The ultimate measuring sticks for these tracks will be their lasting power - how much are you going to want to race on these tracks after you've been through them a few times and they're not "new" any more? How do they stack up against the content that's already in MK8? This review tells me that they're okay, not great. And that's okay. I'll see for myself when I get home and try them out.
@PARK1755 it’s just nice to hear the new Nintendo news and what the reviews say about the content of the games they review but they’re not good critics. I don’t think anyone expects them to be.
How did Nintendo manage to tear apart the music in Mario Circuit 3? It was much better on SNES... and Wii.
I feel the need to point out that Sky-High Sundae is named Straciatella Street in the Dutch version, and I kinda like that.
@Daniel36,
Much prefer the Dutch name, sounds awesome.
Dang, while 6/10 isn't a bad score, this review is extra harsh. This DLC is an easy 8-9/10 for me. Different strokes though.
@johnvboy Actually no, I do not have the original or even a Wii U. The gap since the 8D port is bad enough, it's already tied for the longest gap between entries and is going to end up the longest when all's said and done. God help the people that actually did play the Wii U original because it's an even longer gap. Again, extensions are generally better for the first year or two after the release. After 5 years, you typically don't get DLC, you get a new game.
Hey folks, just a reminder that you are of course welcome to disagree with the scores here and tell us why you feel otherwise, but please remain constructive & respectful when doing so. There are humans behind these articles, please be kind ❤️
Did this guy play a different Wave 2 then what Nintendo released for everyone else?
"...for anyone looking for a new twist or some added surprises, Wave 2 plays it by the book and doesn't deviate from the original designs."
Yeah unless you count the fact that Kalamari Desert literally has you go for one lap along the train tracks, racing in the opposite direction as the train! How do you not acknowledge how cool of a twist this was? My butt clenches every time I have to turn inside the tunnel because the train could be right around the corner!
@Daniel36 That track made me want to eat sugary junk food.
@KayFiOS I really like this Kalimari Desert tribute and the arranged music is fine, too. The new version of Choco Mountain (Wave 1), on the other hand, disappointed me.
@Bolt_Strike,
Agree with you.
But as I mentioned before this is not your usual situation, the Wii U's rather lackluster sales performance has given birth to this particular limbo we find ourselves in.
I doubt a new game will appear until the new machine, hey perhaps Nintendo will release it very close to launch, like they did with the Switch... well if they have any sense they will.
For now I will take whatever I can get, and with the sales of deluxe the way they are, we could be getting nothing at all.
@KayFiOS I'm guessing it's because they've played Tour. The last two laps of this version of Kalimari Desert are pulled straight from a variant of the course in Tour called Kalimari Desert 2 (Tour only has 2 laps instead of 3, so they added 1 lap of Kalimari Desert 1 to the beginning to pad it out). If you've never played Tour, then yeah, it's fresh and original, but if you have played Tour, it's mainly a copy/paste job. The reviewer could've probably done a better job of acknowledging that, how much you'll enjoy the Booster Course pack in general depends on how much you've played Tour.
@DreamlandGem there's humans behind the posts, fair. He tried his best, fair.
Giving this wave a 6/10 while the first wave got a 7/10 and some of the criticisms he made is still on the level of IGNs "Too much water" review logic.
Don't understand how these are considered b-side filler. There are some absolute classics here. Mario Circuit 3 a stone cold favourite of mine on Wii. Don't understand the constant bashing of "textures" I see on the internet too. The courses look fine, and to my eyes no worse than the original tracks. If not for people keep bringing it up, I wouldn't even know there was a difference. Besides, as Nintendo gamers are we really that obsessed with graphics? We can't be, surely.
@Bolt_Strike who is everyone (you are speaking for yourself)? Please don’t use such disingenuous wording. I’ve loved the DLC from the first pack to the fact that battle mode was altered on switch(I have been playing since day 1 on wiiu). I realize that adding a new number has the psychological effect of “it’s better” than the previous entry, but beyond the gimmick of each entry (most of which show up in some form in the next game) if any game could (and obviously does based on sales…which also show that a large number of people are fine with the current entry) work with the DLC/pseudo live service model it’s Mario Kart. Nintendo isn’t licensing cars or music so honestly adding tracks via DLC works. And sales back that up. If the market rejected this model they way you try to suggest in hyperbole (which undermines your entire argument) then sales would have fallen off a cliff. Instead we get good sales and panic posts wondering when the next set of tracks comes out. I realize that we live in a instant gratification gluttony age, but the tracks are fan favorites and it’s pretty cool that we have gotten them. Obviously you disagree and that’s fine. However you haven’t proved your stance beyond emotion. So I shall part ways here. Have a nice day.
@rockodoodle I am gonna ignore all the “scraps and lazy” talk because that isn’t an argument. But why are you expecting a “proper MK” entry for switch? Based on what criteria? MK8 is a solid game that sells well and is getting rather consistent updates. What makes these courses “scraps”as you call them? Objectively speaking. Are they less fun because they are retro tracks? No, people spin up the old games and retro tracks are a staple of the franchise. By all intents and purposes MK8 if it followed previous entries wouldn’t have gotten any of the dlc or a port or an overhaul to the battle mode. Yet it did; I see nothing “lazy” or “scraps” about that. However obviously you feel the way you feel about it so it is what it is. I’m going to go have fun with the new tracks. Have a nice day.
This is definitely one of those instances where there is a big discrepancy between critic reviews and player opinion.
Critics are like - "Ackchyually these tracks are not as good as proper MK8 tracks".
Players are like - "Yay more Mario Kart!"
I have to agree with thos review and I still wished that they put the same level of quality into these tracks as they did the original 48.
But im also a sucker for mario kart so I'm gonna have a blast racing these courses with my friends after work regardless
“ however, much like in Wave 1, these two tracks have been painstakingly recreated for Mario Kart 8. If you're after a faithful nod to the originals, you'll be more than happy here, but for anyone looking for a new twist or some added surprises, Wave 2 plays it by the book and doesn't deviate from the original designs.
I don’t understand? Did we play the same game? Because there is indeed a stage that’s different. I understand the graphics aren’t the best and I would like them to be better too, but there not everything.
I just can’t agree with this score.
Yeah... I'm somewhat enjoying them myself.
Do you ever think people are expecting too much from DLC ?
Mario Kart 9 is what they are really working on behind closed doors anyways.
Just played through Kalamari Desert and the second lap you go off a ramp and racing alongside the train, so don't quite get your comment about them not having deviated from the original 🤷🏻♂️
@Ryu_Niiyama I will enjoy too, but it’s just time for a new entry in the series. They should at least add more new tracks, like 4 out of the eight rather than recycle so much content.
Yup ...Told ya.
Sad. Very sad.
Hope and pray Nintendo's working on an absolute banger big budget epic Mario Kart 9 for the Switch 2.
Sky High Sundae only disappoint cause it's a very bland out theme track. It's not based on any Mario theme at all and it's boring to race on. Instead of a bland junk food track, Nintendo could had just give us a Splatoon or a Cruis'n theme track, it would had been much interesting especially a Cruis'n track where the track constantly changes as you race, that would had been very exciting to race on.
Next "Mario Kart" will be "Super Nintendo Kart", like Smash Bros...too many franshises inside!
My only question is shouldn’t New York Minute be New Donk Minute? Are all the real world city courses in Mario Kart Tour these real world cities transporting to Mushroom Kingdom? Or does this establish that all Mushroom Kingdom locations exist in ours?
So many unanswered questions.. ok I’m gonna stop thinking about this.
… Wun can only hope.
Who puts a five-paragraph "Second Opinion" smack in the middle of an op-ed piece? It's like pulling the mask off a Scooby Doo villain in the first two minutes of a show, cutting to commercials for ten minutes and then spending fifteen minutes introducing the mystery that was already solved.
I simply disagree with this review.
Sky-High Sundae: Just as anxiety inducing as the preview suggests. The roads are narrow, curve, and bounce all over the place with this guardrail-less place. That's without accounting the antigravity or the other racers.
Mario Circuit: Getting over the track choice, The asthetic is the only lame part. Why is it set in the middle of nowhere?
Snow Land: Simply Love this course. The favorite of the bunch. Don't fall to the water and get good tires.
New York minute: The cars do look awkward standing in a two way street but a course doesn't always need obstacles to have fun. Wish it was a bit longer...
Sydney Sprint: Love this course.
Mushroom gourge: Tricky mushrooms is tricky. Course looks nice.
Kalahari Desert: More horns and different lap paths. Please Nintendo-Sempai?
Waluigu pinball: The colors, Duke! The Colors!
Overall 7 out of 10 at least.
Minuses
The crowd is still doing that waving thing back from the default game. Dress em up at least. I guess that can't be helped....
Waluigi pinball sound effects haven't been given as prominent as the DS original.
Mario Circuit 3 is set in the middle of nowhere with the NES SMB set they're going for on the outside the course underutilized. Put a castle in here.
Untextured thing here and the but not bad graphics overall.
I thoroughly enjoyed wave 2 and it has made the overall Mario Kart 8 experience even better. 6 out of 10 is harsh. I get it, reviews are subjective, and for me, this track pack is amazing.
@Blooper987 agreed!
Removed - unconstructive
@Rykdrew Mario Kart DS, the game Waluigi Pinball debuted in, predates Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing.
Kalimari Desert is very different than the N64 version though.
Decent selection of tracks but a lot left to be desired in the presentation department, just as Wave 1 was. 7/10 for me.
Really though the blandness in presentation really makes me pine for the next Mario Kart where they’re hopefully going all out. Hope they fully embrace other Nintendo IPs like they dabbled with in MK8 and have a good mix of original Mario Kart tracks, retro tracks and tracks based on other IPs. Stretch it out to third party properties too, why not
Literally everyone has a track they ADORE in this Wave of Tracks... no complaints.
Meanwhile gaming outlets are the only ones crying and bemoaning absolutely nothing....
Full clown mode
Will Nintendo ever develop tracks again as good as my 4 favourites? CHEESE LAND RIBBON RACEWAY MUTE CITY BIG BLUE?!! 😋
@JasmineDragon Wow that was oddly specific, yet, so right.
I totally agree. Personally I think it's a 5. By the end we'll have quite a few new tracks worth doing, but way more filler worth skipping, and that's a shame considering the main game has so very little filler at all. It's fine to expect the same quality in the DLC, people seem like they want it to be good so bad that they'll attack the truth.
How did you cover kalamari desert, and forget laps 2 and three are, oh, I don’t know, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the original?
Painstakingly recreated to a fault? How did you forget to mention that?
Glad to see people calling out the ridiculous score.
The tracks in this pack look great! Looking forward to playing on Mushroom Gorge.
A Mario Kart track based on the city of Sydney!! I am in!
Great to see my country included in this one. I have never played Mario Kart Tour but am looking forward to playing this track. I grew up in Sydney (well, actually a coastal town located about an hour and a half away) but have spent a great deal of my life in Sydney. Very excited for this one!
My kids and I are loving the new tracks, the game has always been fun, and getting these new tracks just makes it all the more enjoyable.
As for me, my favorite tracks from each cup are...
Turnip Cup: Kalimari Desert
Propeller Cup: Sky-High Sundae
Although I got all nostalgic for Mario Circuit 3, let's be honest, I'll be playing this track a lot.
Wave 2 is much better than the Wave 1, with the likes of Kalihari Desert being surprisingly good (I hated it on N64) and Snow Land feeling quite new as I don't remember much from the GBA at all. The "Tour" courses are all good (esp Sydney Sprint), with Sundae Surprise the weakest, particularly for being brand new.
Overall, it's a good mix, with the only criticism that more should come from the DS because it had the best tracks ever. Looking forward to Air Fortress, Mushroom Bridge and Banshee Boardwalk in particular. Delfino Square, Peach Circuit and DK Pass would be choices.
This is a very odd thing to write a review about. I can't really remember, but were there also reviews for every additional Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character?
@PARK1755 To be fair, he does kind of explain it when he says: "when it comes to Mario Kart, we have pretty high standards, you know." In other words, he's going to be harsher on these tracks in Mario Kart than he would if they were in another game because he expects more.
Now, obviously, that's a pretty stupid reason and a nonsensical way to review something, but at least it does kind of explain what's happened.
I really like these new levels. I felt the first GP/Cup wasn't as fun in the layout but the second with the new track was really good. I really liked the new Sundae level and the Sydney one is awesome. Why though are the characters in the background towering over the drivers, just seems like an oversight.
Oh my, not a great score! Better not buy this wav-oh wait, I got the booster pass already so why bother? Why bother reviewing this anyways? Can't you lot wait until the end of 2023?
I have the exact opposite opinion of this pack: I like these courses a lot more than the first pack.
Wave 2 is definitely better than Wave 1, but I agree with the score given. It's more that Wave 1 should have been a 4 or a 5 than Wave 2 getting more than a 6.
This is Nintendo porting mobile courses to the Switch... How anyone can suggest a 6 isn't a great score for such a practice is beyond me.
Yes it's fun. Yes it's "free" but I'm sorry it's a resounding NO as to whether these tracks are even close to the quality of the original MK8 and first DLC tracks.
6 is as good as it gets for these.
I like these tracks better as well. As mentioned in the review and above, the textures could be better….I think the new track is pretty cool too. Another thing…. I can’t decide if I would rather have them all at once or spread out. I also wish they would some of the cool stufff in Tour with different cars and variations of characters. One last thing, is it me or is the music on Kalamari Desert remastered as well?
I agree with a few points, Sky-High Sundae to me was also a bit naff after being excited, the blind jump just isn't really that fun and its a bit too short and basic for my liking, the tracks as a whole do look better and I like that they updated the cars to move in Coconut Mall - some good tracks here, very minor visual issues aside from the 2D crowd on Sydney Sprint - still another 8 tracks to cause chaos on - love more MK content!
They admittedly put a bit more efforts into the visuals this time but overall the tracks still scream "Mario Kart Tour" to me and that style just clashes too much with the gorgeous artstyle of MK8. Also, there are still no anti-grivity features in any of the tracks which is just lazy. It's been so long since we got a new MK game and seeing these half-hearted tracks just isn't going to cut it for me.
I went to play these tracks last night only to find out that my youngest son took our family's copy on vacation with him. I guess I'll be waiting until Sunday to give them a try.
It's mario kart, and we got mushroom gorge and waluigi pinball. What's not to love? Maybe the fact that some of these courses are copy-pasted straight from tour, but whatever, at least i can play them on my switch instead of the mobile game. Wish they would update the graphics for switch though.
Overall, so far I give the dlc 8.5/10
I agree with the Second Opinion more than the actual review. My family all played the new tracks last night and the consensus was that this wave is better than the first one. Most of the wave one tracks we felt were kind of "meh" except for Ninja Hideaway. Sky High Sundae is broken but an interesting experiment. Waluigi Pinball and Mushroom Gorge are awesome and we liked the changes to Kalimari Desert. Sydney Sprint is a good Tour track. Keep 'em coming, Nintendo! Wave 3 as a Christmas "present"!
Poor Review. Nothing for real driver.
These tracks were better than Wave 1 easily. Had more fun with them too. NL, are you sure you guys even like Mario Kart anymore?
@MajinSoul there were antigravity features in these new tracks.
What? A six? Did we play the same expansion? First one deserved some critic and even this one has some Tour roots showing through but I don't get how this could get less than eight.
@eaglebob345
But that service isn’t free….
@Markiemania95 You are correct! I´ve never played Mario Kart DS. But it´s true. Wonderful track lay out!
@MajinSoul Sky-High Sundae is ALL anti gravity - still I think they should have added more anti grav sections in other tracks
Nintendo has a absolute smash on their hands. Mario Kart 8 continues to exceed sales expectations, and Nintendo gave us a love letter to an already great game. I think Mario Kart 9 needs to be different. It would be cool to have a formula 1 style of racing. Long races through the countryside, pit stops, drifting through the countryside, Le Mans endurance style. Mario Kart 8 deluxe perfected the style, so I am not sure making the same game again with a "9" on it would be necessary.
Le Mans endurance Mario Kart would he fantastic!
I could be making this up, but I swear since the update red shells have started swerving past players that have just been knocked out by something else and instead moving onto the next target. Anyone else noticed?
@Bolt_Strike Even then, the Tour tracks have been made more impressive in MK8DX by changing the route the player takes on each lap, and Kalimari Desert 1&2 being fused in this way is equally as impressive.
@KayFiOS Might not be enough for some people because you're retreading old ground either way, just with one combined course instead of multiple variants. So there is still a feeling of "been there, done that".
Also, MK8D is also lacking the R, T, and R/T variants which is a large part of what makes the Tour variants even more fun. So arguably it's actually worse than Tour.
@Bolt_Strike any track remake is retreading old ground so half the original game is trash as well.
Still not as trash as this review though.
Even your own YouTube channel really liked this wave. Gave it an 8/10. Very confusing that your website is giving two different scores.
@ViewtifulGerry No but it's "free" with the expansion. I've no interest in the online expansion so I just bought the DLC.
6 outta ten? Lol who hurt you?
What's the point of rating DLC? People who want more courses will get it, those that don't won't. It's still the same game.
Terrible review, this is a 9 for me, everytrack is super fun.
@Blooper987 yep 100% agree this was an L of a review
We are definitely spoiled with all the content this game has. It's almost overwhelming!
Accurate review! Don't get me wrong, I love more mario kart regardless. But people are lying to themselves if you don't see that ALL of these booster courses so far have less quality in them than the OG courses that released almost TEN YEARS AGO. Just give us MK9 already.....
Not the first to say it, but Kalimari Desert hasn't been recreated without any changes from the original, in fact it is HUGELY different from the N64 version from Lap 2! Your video chaps got this right, I think a correction is in order on this particular point @Olliemar28 (not that you have to like it or anything, but it just isn't a straight recreation without any twists in the way Mario Circuit 3 is)
Weird how the new nintendo yourube vid now contradicts this...
If you're reviewing just the tracks it might be good to note if it
s a good single player track (like the city tracks are), or more a online one (like mario circuit 3 is, which is really crazy racing at times)...
i like kalamari, sydney and waluigi most, sky high sundae and ny least.
