Niantic, the powerhouse behind the ever-popular Pokémon GO, has announced its newest mobile game Peridot, which seems to take a few cues from the Pocket Monster-collecting franchise.
Peridot is a real-world AR mobile game where you take a virtual pet out with you. You care for it, you raise it, and you can breed it to create unique creatures that you'll love. It's Tamagotchi for the 21st century. Our next question is, what happens if you forget about them for a year?
Okay, that's definitely dug up some horrific memories, and we wouldn't want to let harm come to these weird but adorable creatures. Niantic has only shared a few details about the game, so we hope these will alleviate any fears:
After thousands of years of slumber, Peridots (or Dots for short) are waking to a world vastly different from the one in which they used to roam, and they’ll need our help to protect them from extinction.
You’ll foster your own Peridots as you embark on this experience. These are creatures who feel so real, you’ll love every moment raising them from birth to adulthood. While you explore the world together, you’ll get to learn more about your cute new friends, develop a bond as you nurture and play with them, and work with other players to diversify their species.
That's a lot of responsibility! But again, think of how cute these are. And at least there's no battling like in the Pokémon games — that would probably disrupt the "protect them from extinction" part.
The game is soft-launching in selected markets this April on the App Store and Google Play. You can sign up here to pre-register for the game and get updates on when it releases.
What do you think of Peridot? Would you like to see the game collaborate with Pokémon GO? Let us know in the comments.

Hope this works out better for them then that Harry Potter game.
Harry potter, Pikmin, at least this time they won't taint another franchises portfolio.
@Marioman2022 how did you get ‘furry’ from this?
I’m disappointed (and surprised) that we don’t have anything Tamagotchi or Gudetama related on Switch so far, even if they’re Japanese exclusives.
I’m not expecting Nintendo to make a new Nintendogs game this generation though, not without a microphone and camera anyway (and the possibilities are exciting).
Is it me, or do the creatures have an Eevee like quality to them? Since I don't play any games on my mobile any more, this is a pass for me. Whenever I'm outside, I prefer to be in the moment and not be distracted by tech.
I'm not sure of this is the sort of app I want to take up storage space on my phone with. But I'd be lying if I said its a dumb idea.
I think this is actually a good step for Niantic to take. There's clearly a market for a Tamagachi style 'virtual pet' game, especially if they apply what they learned over the last 7 years of Pokemon Go (my god... has it really been 7 years?) and create a fresh IP that they won't owe residuals and licensing fees on.
Pokemon Go has grown so far beyond that buggy little crash-prone app that launched in 2016, but I really think that they've hit their full potential at this point. There's plenty more pokemon to add in, sure, but there's no real 'new' features that will considerably change how the game is played like when they added in trading and PvP.
Its a Longshot, but the timing is right, and I can see this potentially becoming the next "big thing" that might even outpace Pokemon Go. I can also see it being a huge flop that will have the servers shut down within the next year.
Hope this isn’t like pikmin bloom, I loved that when it came out but got bored of it pretty quickly once I did everything
I'm surprised that they didn't continue to work with The Pokemon Company to make this a Pokemon Tamagotchi type of game. Surely this same idea but with Pokemon would be a huge hit. And while you could start off small with like 15 different Pokemon choices to raise as a virtual pet (I'm thinking they'd start with many of the starters, as well as Pikachu and Eevee for available pet choices from the start), the ability to expand the available pets would be vast without having to create any new designs from scratch, allowing to easily keep the game alive for years to come much like Go.
The idea of a virtual pet won't be fully realised until we have wireless AR glasses, that are as slim as a pear of sunglasses, which can detect hand gestures, letting you stroke the pet, etc.
If anyone has seen the Anime, "Dennou Coil", you'll get the gist of what I'm talking about.
@yuwarite hell, even beyond that would be AR contact lenses, and at some point beyond that, some sort of surgery that builds AR vision directly into our brains, so pretty much once we're cyborgs lol. Of course all of that is far more in the future than a nice pair of thin AR glasses, those should be here fairly soon.
Alas, all our effort to prevent their extinction will be for naught. For the all servers must eventually end.
I dunno who wrote this description but they must be new to game development.
Would be nice if Niantic got Pokémon Go to function consistently and properly before they made another game considering the absurd amount of profit it has brought them.
Yeah, I'm sure this new game, Pokemon Don't Go Anywhere, is gonna be a huge breakout! It's not like Niantic has been coasting on the success of already established franchises to push AR tech demo games.
The idea is lovely and "wholesome" but I can smell the microtransactions. Pet food, toys, beds, costumes. There's probably certain things to breed with. Stuff to speed up the resultant eggs. I may be cynical, but this will be a huge cash sink for some.
Only 5 days late to tge party, NL. Welcome to the hype train.
No more Niantic!!!
