Valkyrie no Densetsu is the latest game coming to the Switch via Arcade Archives. This cult classic action RPG launched in Japan in 1989 but didn't see a western release until Namco Museum Vol. 5, where it was titled The Legend of Valkyrie.
Developed by Namco, Valkyrie no Densetsu was greatly inspired by the Vikings and middle ages of Europe. As Valkyrie, you explore the world of Marvel from a top-down perspective as you hack and slash at enemies. You have a time limit to beat each of the eight levels, so it's very different from many other action RPGs from the time.
You can play on your own, or bring a friend along to control Valkyrie's lizard-esque companion Kurino Xandra. There's a currency system in-game, and you can pick up and exchange items for powerful magic spells. Praised at the time for its plot, design, characters, and gameplay, this is yet another welcome line-up in the Arcade Archives collection.
Valkyrie no Densetsu launches on 14th April (that's tomorrow!) for the usual Arcade Archives price of $7.99 / €6.99 / £6.29. See what you can get yourself into below, and let us know if you'll be picking this up!

Man, Japan really doesn't like to have Densetsus in their games...
Another franchise whose world and characters I got sold on primarily through Namco x Capcom.😄
@Daniel36 the word means "legend" and they totally didn't pick up the trend from western fantasy works using it on every corner for decades.😉
That's one classic I never got around to playing. Might just change that.
The coop kind of reminds me of Goof Troop but more fighting oriented than puzzle solving. Maybe Pocky & Rocky would be a more apt comparison, but I never got to play that one either
Oh my, my, my, my!!, Yay, yay yay, This is Great!!!!
This game franchise deserve more support, however, for now, have this game here in the west is a nice start, well, really there are oficial game compilations that include this game, but recently and more, in portable, until today/soon
I played this on the Turbo Grafx Mini but it’s in Japanese and I didn’t really get into like that.
@Daniel36 It means legend
I’ve played the namcot pce conversion. I liked it.. I think
Awesome to see it there, although there may be a small problem or two playing without a translation.
Xandra is a lizard? I thought it was a cactus.
Why do I seem to think Xandra got his own game? I want to say on the SNES. I certainly remember a green blob wielding a pitch fork from somewhere...hmm...
Edit - Yes he did. It wasn't that great but at least I'm not going bonkers!
This is an arcade game? From the late 80s?? This looks like a $5 indie game made today!
I can't believe this one slipped under my radar for so long, but I look forward to giving it a try.
@nhSnork I just started playing Project X Zone this weekend, and that was my first thought too. I had JUST heard of this character (and series) for the first time.
Oh awesome! It's not often that Legend of Valkyrie gets rereleased, especially in America! Always good to see Hamster still has some worthwhile games up their sleeve for ACA!
@XBontendo I know I know. I was just joking. "No" Densetsu...
YES!! Somebody mentioned Legend of Valkyrie in the Wonder Momo comments, and I loved the looks of it! Absolutely will be getting this.
Hamster, banzai!!!
This is what a Zelda arcade game would had feel like if Nintendo did not move on to the Famicom so soon.
@Daniel36 In Japan they used the word "no" to label any title with the separate usage of "the" and "of" in title for example The Legend of Zelda in Japan is translated as Zelda no Densetsu. Any title that use "of" and "the" together with no separate usage (meaning both words are use right after another) won't had the word "no" in their title for example Seiken Densetsu (translated as Legend of the Holy Sword) and Garou Densetsu (translated as Legend of the Hungry Wolf).
It goes like this:
The Legend of Zelda (Zelda no Densetsu)
The Legend of Dragoon (Dragoon no Densetsu)
Legend of the Holy Sword (Seiken Densetsu)
Legend of the Hungry Wolf (Garou Densetsu)
Basically if they use no in the title then the English translation of the title will have "The" at the beginning.
This excites me so much. I loved this game when I had it on Namco Museum Vol 5 (why did I sell that). I have a feeling I know the answer to this, but I hope that it's in English...but considering that Genpei Toma Den wasn't I don't have much hope for it being in English.
@Daniel36 あ、ごめんごめん。分かります。
I’m frustrated that other companies make their classic games available to download but Nintendo keeps most of them only available as a subscriber to access on the Switch.
Yes! Always love me some Valkyrie goodness.👍😊
I’ve never played this game, but I instantly recognized the music, and was singing along. Has that main stage song been used elsewhere by Namco?
This looks really cool. Its insane how many neat games Namco made for arcades in the 80s
Project X Zone alumna! Time for a 3rd one methinks
@BloodNinja As a matter of fact, yes, it has!
Project X Zone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7THzqEp0Avw
Namco X Capcom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLkZXwYowTU
@farrgazer lol thank you! But I haven’t played those games either! Why do I know this song?! Maybe someone used it in a meme video or something, hahaha...
@Jeff2sayshi too bad that Valkyrie is reportedly the only one from the series to have returned in PXZ games. Kurino and Sabine were memorable characters and boasted a bunch of quality attacks in NxC.
@Andyv01 I've been wanting a third Project X Zone at least since finishing NxC, despite having yet to properly play the 3DS games (I'm currently busy with the interposed Endless Frontier dilogy). I call all this stuff "the Smash Bros of tactical RPGs" for a reason, and it thrills me to think what Monolith Soft (with some assistance if they have their hands too full with xenoblades etc - imagine Intelligent Systems, Bamco and/or WayForward chiming in) could possibly do with the series nowadays.
@BloodNinja
Maybe in the mix of Classic arcade Namco 80's v2 in Smash bros?

@SakuraHaruka THAT ONE LOL
Thanks
That was driving me nuts!
