Strictly Limited Games are back with another Wonder Boy physical release! This time, it's the turn of Wonder Boy Returns Remix, the 2019 arcade platformer that goes back to the roots of the series.
Pre-orders go live soon — on 20th March — but Wonder Boy fans can take a look at what to expect on the store page.
There are two different versions you can get your hands on, plus a lovely little aluminium art card to put on display! The plate is 14cm x 17cm (5.5 x 6.7 inches), and it weighs a rather dainty 230g kg.
But those physical editions look pretty darn nice, too, if we don't say so ourselves. Here's a look at the Collector's Edition, which comes with a wealth of goodies:
Costing €54.99, and limited to 2000 copies, you get a lot of bang for your buck here, including:
- Collector’s Edition Box
- Tom-Tom Keychain
- Stylish Tote Bag
- Postcard Set of 2
- Reversible Artwork Poster
- Character Sticker Sheet
- Original Soundtrack CD
- A colourful manual
A Sega Master System manual has some of our hearts aflutter. But if the Collector's Edition is a bit out of your budget, and you still want that manual, don't fret! The Standard Edition is only €29.99 and comes with the manual too! There are 3000 copies of this one, so regardless of which version you get, you'll need to be quick.
In our review, we had this to say about Wonder Boy Returns Remix back when it first released:
"If you pick up Wonder Boy Returns Remix for five minutes, you might think we’re mad; to the uninitiated, its mechanics are obtuse and infuriating – and accompanied by mercilessly repeated, taunting muzak. However, if you can manage some patience, you will find a well-designed action game that makes absolute sense of its world and its control scheme."
Will you be picking up one of these physical releases? Let us know!

This is a hard sell with Strictly Limited's nearly-complete Wonder Boy collection up for pre-order right now.
Wooooonder boy, what is the secret of your powers?
Everytime I read this games name that Tenacious D song starts playing in my head..
Are these games really that good? Never heard of Wonder Boy until the first remake that came to Switch. Now we've had a million more since then, and people seem to really like them. I love 2D platformers, but not so much metroidvanias, which these seem a bit closer to. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
My favorite 2D platformer is Rayman Legends, which is second to only Cuphead in terms of an amazing, hand-drawn art direction. The art style of the Wonder Boy games just doesn't hit for me, though. Most games that try to do the hand-drawn thing don't make it work, and the graphics tend to look more Adobe Flash mobile gamey, in my opinion.
All that in mind, are these games still a strong recommendation? Which one is the best? I have no idea where I would even start. I'm guessing the one that came out during the Switch's launch year is the one to play first, but I can't even remember the name of it. They all kind of run together for me, and it's gotten confusing.
Am I going mad? I'm having deja vu. I thought this already had a physical release.
@Not_Soos Wonderboy IV The Dragon's Trap is the one that came out in the Switch's first year. It's a remake of the Master System classic. It's also a Metroidvania but nothing too complex. Think Shantae Pirates Curse.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a brand new game, that I think is officially part of the series, despite not carrying the Wonder Boy name. I haven't played it yet but it's supposed to be very good. It's also a Metroidvania.
The older Wonderboy games like this one is a remaster of though are straight up arcade platformers. Pretty basic stuff, run left to right, boshing enemies and jumping over gaps.
Ordered the 21 games edition 2 weeks ago from Strickly Limited. Master Sysrem versions, cant wait!
My first Wonder Boy I played on Master System...never finished.
I can't stop smiling at the boss' position on that CD!
This remake kinda sucks. It scrolls really jittery. Stick to the original versions in that upcoming collection.
I ordered the collection when it was announced a few weeks ago. The next day strictly limited increased the dollar price by quite a bit. It seems like they’re making US buyers pay the European VAT tax and on top of that pay our local tax rate too. Their games were already pretty pricey, but this just makes them outrageous. I won’t be buying from them any more until they figure out how to make it more reasonable.
The game had an update same day as this announcement. Anybody know what was in the update??
