This year marks the 35th anniversary of Street Fighter. Capcom kicked off the celebrations by sharing a new logo with fans at the start of this week and now, as a bonus, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has joined in on the celebrations.
Although the development of Nintendo's all-star brawler is officially over, it seems it's still got some surprises of its own. To pay respect to Capcom's legendary fighter it's releasing a brand new Evil Ryu spirit.
This event will get underway later this week on Friday and will run for five days. It follows on from Nintendo making the Metroid Dread spirits permanently available in the game.
It's probably best to treat this as nothing more than a special surprise, but who knows what else could happen in the future. Will you be heading back to Smash Bros. Ultimate to unlock this spirit? Comment down below.

I hope the Spirit Battles promoting games continues through all of 2022.
Interesting. Would be cool if they kept adding spirits every now and again, even though the game itself is now fully finished.
In the past it was cool to see some otherwise unrepresented non-Nintendo games get spirits, such as the Kunio-kun ones. Even some modern releases got spirits such as Sakuna.
There are plenty of historically significant games that don't really have spirits yet. It would have been nice if, for example, all of those Namco easter eggs in Pac-Man's taunt got spirits... (lol I just want to see Katamari in Smash)
...It would also have been nice to see anything FF other than FF7 get some representation, but it seems like Square Enix doesn't want to cooperate for whatever reason.
Sakurai deserves a rest, hope that all the post-Sora content is made without him.
But it's possible that the game will continue on Switch 2, getting a deluxe version of Ultimate.
@victordamazio
My only wish is that any 'deluxe' re-release includes the whole DK rap.
It's not legit unless it also has a matching Daigo spirit.
@nukatha still can't believe how bad they butchered that song
Keep 'em coming. I would LOVE to see some DOOM spirits as well, especially if the designs are based on the classic games (though it would make sense to include some from the last two games as well).
@nukatha : My hope for a Deluxe re-release is that the music isn't so heavily compressed and that they fill up that 32GB cart (as they will need to use one anyway if the collective size of the base game + software updates + DLC is anything to go by).
I also wish that the song Hitori Omou (Lost In Thoughts All Alone) from Fire Emblem If/Fates wasn't cut down so much. It's a tragedy that they completely skipped the beautiful crescendo of the song when that was precisely the moment that really could have elevated the epic mood of fights. Some more tracks would be welcome too. The lack of Jimmy T songs from the WarioWare series is such a wasted opportunity too as they would have complemented the Wii Fit stage quite nicely.
now if we could have another Street Fighter game on Switch...
All I want is a way to organize the characters by series on the fighter select screen. Kind of like how they do on the website and not a major thing to add like another Fighter’s Pass. Is this ever gonna happen?
silence and picture of a sunset
@Silly_G
Don't forget the lack of God Shattering Star.
@ItalianBaptist
Absolutely. I wish I could organize by franchise as was series tradition.
@ItalianBaptist I've said it in the past, but not being able to re-arrange the Character Select Screen (and sometimes the Stage Select Screen) is such a mess for such a large roster. I don't want to go look when a character debuted in Smash (an order which isn't even respected in the first place), I have an easier time finding a character based on its series.
On-topic: It's interesting they're adding one more Spirit. I hope they have some ready for Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.
Yeah sure I'll unlock it.
Knew it. I said at the time that just because they were saying they were going to start repeating events didn't mean they were saying that there would never be another new event / spirit, but everyone just merrily read into it something different.
Awesome, glad to have a new Spirit fight.
It'd be awesome if they also made new Spirit fights to promote other upcoming games, such as Splatoon 3, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario & Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Advance Wars: Re-Boot Camp, Sonic Frontiers, Triangle Strategy and/or Bayonetta 3.
Making Spirit fights doesn't take as much effort or resources as say a new character, presumably a skeleton crew could do them. May not happen, but it'd be nice.
Had to uninstall it to make room for Witcher.
I don't think I ever really used more than 3 spirits anyway, and collecting things just for the sake of collecting them is not my cup of tea.
@Silly_G I want every game regardless of platform to have a optional download for uncompressed game music.
@BrintaPap : For download exclusives, maybe, but it should be all on the cartridge if physical. I don’t want optional downloads for physical games. It even annoys me when language packs are optional downloads, even if I don’t intend to use any of the other language packs, as it sets a poor precedent for other releases (such as UK English being download only for Diablo 3).
Hopefully this leads to SMTV getting spirits, it's rather sad that Smash got spirits for every major Switch release in 2021 except SMTV.
Neat! Shame they didn't also add Violent Ken.
Still no Shin Megami Tensei V spirits.
I honestly think that these wouldn’t be hard to make as long as they’re from a series that has a character in the game. The only hard part would be the coding. They could totally keep going for 2022
This is not a bad promotional idea, and it would be pretty easy to keep adding spirits. So, they can keep doing it if they want to.
@nukatha
"My only wish is that any 'deluxe' re-release includes the whole DK rap."
"whole"?
Neat. I'd love to see them add in new spirits a few times a year to tie in with new/upcoming releases (I can't imagine it'd require any notable development time, or the assistance of high ups like Sakurai), but given SMTV hasn't gotten any yet, this is likely a one off.
@Silly_G that would be very nice indeed but for some games like Smash you would need to have a 128 GB cartridge or larger for all the music. But on the other hand smaller games with around 30-60 could fit it on a cartridge depending on length and quality.
@BrintaPap : You wouldn't need anywhere near that much space, and this is concerning perhaps the Switch game containing the most music (unless somebody can enlighten me with other examples).
Even if the entirety of Smash Ultimate's 29(ish) hour soundtrack were stored in LPCM format (which is a lossless format), identical to audio CDs, they would need about 18GB to store it all (800MB per 100 minutes).
But nowadays, there are more efficient ways to store and/or decode lossless audio without occupying such large amounts of raw data, similar to how commercial Blu-ray discs support formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, both of which are also lossless, but are far more efficient at keeping file sizes down (similar to how ZIP/RAR files are able to compress data without affecting the integrity of the data upon decompression), and hence why Blu-ray discs are capable of storing so many audio streams without compromising on quality.
@Mario500
The Ultimate version doesn't include all the verses that are in Melee.
I would love to have a mii fighter bundle. Maybe not even discounted but it’s annoying that you only can add 10 items to the e shop cart and there are so many mii outfits
