Update 2: Oddventure's Kickstarter is now over, raising 213% of its funding goal to secure a release on Switch and PC in 2022. If you missed it, make sure to check out all the details in our original article below.
Update: With 24 days still to go, Oddventure's Kickstarter campaign has already reached its €20,000 goal. In an update to backers, the team has shared the following message, confirming that stretch goals are on the way:
"We want to thank you from the depths of our hearts. You help us to make our dreams come true. We will do our best so you can enjoy more of the odd story and charming pixel art in the full game! Now it's time to reach the stretch goals. Stay tuned for another update....and Stay Odd!"
Original Article (Fri 23rd Apr, 2021 11:30 BST): Polish indie publisher Pineapple Works has announced that Oddventure, an RPG inspired by the likes of EarthBound and Undertale, will be making its way to Switch next year.
Developed by Infamous Rabbit, the game's described as a "lore-rich turn-based crazy JRPG set in a cursed fairytale world." While a Q3 2022 release window has already been pencilled in for both Switch and PC, a Kickstarter will go live next month in an attempt to support the game's development.
Oddventure is a JRPG where you play as Charlie - a nihilistic and rebellious teenage girl with anger issues and social awkwardness. Your search for troublesome younger brother Bonzo is also looking for a way back home. The setting for Charlie’s misadventures is the Kingdom of Luxia, a land taken straight out of original Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales with a dark, Nietzschean twist.
Here's a list of Oddventure's key features:
● Meaningful choices – EVERY decision matters, sometimes in the most unpredictable ways.
● The friendly JRPG where nobody has to die... but can. In a horrible way.
● Countless hidden secrets reference to pop culture and fairy tales.
● Bitter-sweet comedy mixed with some coziness and dark humor.
● A life-changing gaming experience.
You can actually go ahead and check out a free demo of the game on Steam if you'd like to give it a spin. Otherwise, make sure to stay tuned for the Kickstarter going live on 6th May if you're keen on learning more and backing the project.

This looks pretty good. and there is no rabid fanbase attached to it! Will check it out.
this is the probably the most "mother 4" looking earthbound-inspired game - a really clean look
I love the Mother 3 aesthetic and joke references, but that's because I played the translated rom when what I wanted to do was pay for an official release. Thanks, Nintendo
I love me some Earthbound and Undertale, but I have to say this looks a little too inspired. What I enjoyed about Undertale was that while it did clearly take some inspiration from games like Earthbound and Moon, it also forged its own visual identity and did some interesting and unique things with the gameplay. This looks like an Earthbound fangame with Undertale’s morality system tacked on.
Love the setting, will keep an eye out.
@Otherboard Yeah that was my initial reaction — still willing to check it out though, but I know what you mean - I don't want loads of derivative copycats being churned out of games I like, I think it dilutes the uniqueness of them.
Looks cool. Oddventure sure has my attention.
Looks cool- but I feel like every character is just a little bit too tall
I find it odd that the Mother 4 fan game project opted to change it's name to Oddity, and now we have another Mother 3 inspired game calling itself Oddventure.
Cool I love me some Earthbound inspired titles since Nintendo ain't giving us some.
Looks cool.I know this is a bit random but does anyone know if Deltarune has a release date.
@RupeeClock Hiya. We used the name Oddventure long before Mother 4 changed its name. As far as I know this is purely coincidential. We wanted to make Oddventure as a webcomic back in 2016, so I came up with the name without being inspired by them for sure.
@InfamousRabbit
What an odd coincidence.
Oddventure's an excellent play on words though.
Wow this looks to be a true gem. I love the design and quirkiness of it all. Very reminiscent of earthbound I’d say, and that’s a good thing.
An Original game mixing elements from Earthbound and Undertale? sign me up.
Its funny they say undertale and earthbound bc undertale was inspired by earthbound.
Really love the look of those battle graphics. Definitely has my attention.
@Otherboard say it with me now "copied"
Pretty poor choice of title considering the fan made Mother 4 game recently got rebranded as Oddity. This is definitely going to cause some confusion...
The graphics are straight up ripped from Mother 3 and were barely changed, so it make sense that it would look so good
Looks interesting. Wishlisted it on Steam
@kickerofelves Hey. Actually we are using the name Oddventure for few years. And I came up with the name in 2016 when I planned to make the story in a form of webcomic. So back then Oddity was still known as Mother 4. Welp. I don't mind this tho.
@InfamousRabbit To be honest any confusion shouldn't really impact Oddventure.
Since Oddity's release is no where in sight. The worst that could happen is people think Oddventure is the Mother 4 project, which is probably more of an advantage than anything.
@Dr_Lugae To be honest it just happened like 2-4 times maybe. So it seems it's not that confusing. ^^
Sure are a lot of earthbound inspired games ill never be interested in every 1-2 years.
@Eddyson I totally get where you're coming from, but I feel that it's unfair on the games themselves when you use their fanbase to decide how you feel about them and whether you'll play them or not.
This looks great! Sprites may be a little large, meaning it may be easy to get lost, but this is shaping up to scratch the itch YIIK left unsatisfied.
Legit looks like Earthbound. I love it!
I REALLY enjoy those battle scenes! Love the animations and seeing the backside of your party like that. That's spectacular and fresh.
It definitely looks good and the animations are smooth, but perhaps with the mention of Undertale and recently finishing OMORI that I feel skeptical. As long as it can deliver in the writing, I'm sure it will be great, but I'll wait to see its reception, but without knowing a price I don't know what to expect
A third party company should license Mother 3 from Nintendo and officially release it in the West if Nintendo isn’t going to do it.
I wonder if Oddity (former Mother 4) is vaporware at this point...
I honestly didn't care for Undertale,so I'll pass.
Looks cool, take my money
I really like the art style and how the characters look
This game and Oddity are both games I'm all in for. I'm hopeful this becomes an Undertale level of success.
mother if she real
Undertale was not my cup of tea. This is a hard pass.
@Andee I don't think there's cause for concern yet. It's not exactly like we're drowning in Mother clones.
This looks amazing.
This is surely one to keep an eye on
@Otherboard yeah I agree. Indies are becoming a little uninspired lately. I say this but even Omori catches the Mother vibe while being its own thing
The graphics are gorgeous, but too many things about the game rub me the wrong way: It tries too much to be wEirD and the meme humor is a bit in your face and it makes me cringe. The music in the trailer is also terrible.
tried out the demo i really liked it! Sparing has a diff take by either ruining or improving an enemys mood to win, your characters go through it too. makes me wonder how that'll affect diff playthroughs and endings
tho the battles did tend to linger if you try to win without fighting, and my HP and MOOD never always felt safe or at a good point. which helped keep tension but also felt weird for a beginning area
but yeah, the demo does enough diff things for me for it to not JUST feel like earthbound, or undertale. best of luck to this games success
I think the kickstarter link goes to the wrong page? If you notice that one is cancelled but this one works: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/oddventure/oddventure-rpg-0
I think the kickstarter link goes to the wrong page, that is a cancelled page. They have another one that is live.
20k is not enough to make a game. It's concerning they set the bar that low.
I hope that, unlike in Undertail the game doesn't punishes you for being evil and gives such an disappointing end. I don't want to feel sad, I want to feel like the true villain I just played. And please, no gender neutral character. That was really dull in my eyes.
I think the thing that makes me excited is actually seeing characters do their attacks instead of just black boxes. Idk I'm more visual and that change really makes me want to play this game!
And it looks interesting, so definitely will be checking this game out!
@doctorhino Unless you live in Poland and this ammount is much more than for anyone in USA or Westen Europe + you have a decent piece of game made and you are willing to take a risk that you may eventually work some time for free (we know each other for a very long time which also helps)
@Ttimer5 I always wanted to see more games doing that and that's why we had decided to go with it ^^
@Ulanda I want to make only the good route trully satysfying. Also, the main character is a girl, it's mentioned once in every few minutes.
@InfamousRabbit In my eyes, this is disappointing, because if you go for good and evil possibilities, both ends should be rewarding instead of only rewarding the good ending. But that is my opinion, if you like to write your story the way you want it to see, good for you
About the mc, I admid that I overread this because I had not much time, but for me, this was a big disappointment when I played Undertails, because for me, it is not so easy to get into a character when the gender is not given.
I wish you the best and hope that your game will be a success. I will keep an eye on it and give it a try.
I'm satisfied with Earthbound, honestly, but I hope this reaches the success it deserves.
NINJA APPROVED
@InfamousRabbit Looks like avg software engineer makes about 22k in euros a year. And they have a demo so I guess that checks out. Good luck to them.
This actually looks very interesting. I like how it is obviously inspired by the series, but seems not afraid to try out so many new things. I'm looking forward!
@tankymctankus But still not as close or as cool looking as this imo: https://youtu.be/-CBwIXnbUuY
Which used to be this fan project: https://youtu.be/j_5ljnUCeDU
Welp if Nintendon't, someone else will I guess lol
Played Undertale, never played any of the MOTHER titles (but still want to)... thus, I will likely support this Oddventure venture.
I've never played the Mother series yet I've wanted to (with ease and legally) for soooo long now. Just release the damn games, the whole Mother series, on the Eshop like you did with that old Fire Emblem throwback Nintendo. Not even asking for it to be on Switch online. We will pay a cheap price. C'mon smh.
... Wun can only hope.
@BloodNinja o/
@doctorhino Nope, not in Poland. Especially if you start here as a game developer.
@wuntyme8 I think we are safe lol.
Thanks!
@impurekind I know Oddity since it was Mother 4. Hope it will be released one day.
@Ulanda You will feel like a villain. I mean "satysfying" in terms of how people see being good in general. There will be a sad ending, an evil ending, with some dark or even chaotic vibe. All kind of endings.
@InfamousRabbit I’m unfamiliar with that emoticon.
Everything from the art style to the graphics to the battle scenes look exactly like the type of game I would enjoy. I hope this really releases.
@impurekind oh damn! i stopped following this project somewhere around the 'Winter 2014' release date period so pretty incredible to see that they're still working away! wonder how different the final product will be now.
@Chamver We're working on it!
@BloodNinja I was waving my hand as a greeting!
@InfamousRabbit Hi!!!
@wuntyme8 they will never release mother 3 just play the fan translation bro
"Dwarf flashes... everyone blushes" in the first seconds of the trailer?
Bold move... very bold!
So excited! Backed this since i found out about it and played the demo and loved it! Can't wait to get the full game next year!
Always cool to see a game I backed here
I swear every indie RPG is Earthbound inspired.
@Eddyson Would....would you like to start a rabid fan base?
@Chamver It will, we were working on Oddventure after the demo, we made ~1h of game and now thanks to 213% from Kickstarter we can easily work full time and finish it
@SigmaNoire Thanks for supporting us!
@The__Goomba I mean Earthbound was a really good game so why not? But only as long as you're having your own twist.
@MysteryCupofJoe Actually I'm amazed how good our community is. 0% toxic over 2 years. ^^
@Benjinat Yeah it may be a little confusing after Mother 4 changed its name to something similar to ours haha
@Ttim3r We'll be working hard to on it! ^^
@Friendly It's pretty early in the game so why not! We should let people know what to expect haha
I'm honestly very interested, especially since mother 4 is not going to be a thing. It closely resembles the sprite work from mother 3, and I can really appreciate it.
I want this game to actually release before I allow myself to get excited over it.
