Update: It didn't seem obvious in the broadcast, but this will be a Cloud version of the game, which explains why we were shocked it was 'running' on Switch! Check out the trailer above.
Original Article: In a surprise announcement, considering the sizeable scope of the game, today's E3 Nintendo Direct confirmed that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is coming to the Switch; it lands on 26th October.
It was showcased by Square Enix recently; developed by Eidos Montreal, it features an all-new story, is a single-player adventure and has interesting combat that incorporates real-time action with special moves and team management.
That's a pretty significant reveal for Switch, are you excited about this one?

Really didn’t expect this. Kinda let out a curse word, lol
As a cloud version? I'm assuming.
No.
WE are Groot.
Great that this is coming to Switch, very unexpected.
It's a cloud version then, okay, move along, nothing to see here.
It said cloud version in the small text at the top on one of the screens
Nice surprise! After Square Enix presentation and omission I didn't expect it to be released on the Switch.
It's either a cloud version or "PRO ENHANCED". Let's wait and see.
Surprised and excited at first, then read being a Cloud Version at the top and then excitement hurled out the window.
If I do play it, will be on the PS4.
yeah its a cloud version
@Scollurio its cloud version
very nice!
I'll gladly RENT a cloud game, I won't PURCHASE a cloud game.
Nice that Switch owners have the option.
This is nice actually
Yep. It's cloud alright. (JP Nintendo Direct)

Oh, it’s single player? I assumed it would be like their terrible Avengers game and wasn’t interested, but I’ll be watching this one now (but not the Switch version, I don’t want cloud based games).
It's a cloud version btw. Feels important to mention
Cloud version? Hard pass.
I was excited - this was the only game that salvaged SE's showcase for me - until I realized it was probably a Cloud variant. Fine for those who want it, but I'd rather get it on a different platform.
@moodycat I think this game looks pretty cool. I'm not interested in the Cloud version, but I could see myself enjoying it on other platforms.
I'll probably be getting this on PS5 or PC since I have that option over a cloud game. Nice for people who only have Switch as an option though
Ah, that kinda deflates my own curiosity, too. Seriously, though - this, the Plague Tale sequel the other day... all cloud? Hey, western countries, did you get full 5G coverage while I wasn't looking?🤔😄
@nhSnork Probably because they wanted to support the Switch with such games but the Switch being the Switch meant they couldn't be natively ported without issues
@moodycat Honestly I get way less MCU vibes from this than the Avengers game. Gamora and Groot actually look more accurate to their comics counterparts. I think the only real stand out was Star-Lord but they're also offering the 2008 comic costumes as pre-order bonuses so I ain't fussed about it
Subpar Direct, I'd say. BOTW 2 and LIS collection is the only saving grace.
Wow, what a mess. This is a hard pass for sure
I can't believe it, I thought it was running on real-time since the Direct didn't specify it was a cloud version...
Oh well, maybe this means they can bring Avengers too.
This is the first cloud game I've considered getting. Assuming I have no problems maintaining a good Internet connection, is there anything I should know?
Day One purchase. This game wasn't on my radar since I didn't think it would be on a platform I have. Great news, I can get excited for it now.
@Pak-Man nope, if you've got decent Internet you'll be fine.
Eh, doesn't really matter, I'll get it on playstation.
The game looked like it had frame rate issues during Square Enix's E3 press conference despite it running on a PS5 (or PC), so I'm not too surprised they decided to make the Switch version a cloud game.
Square needs to take a hard look at the Spider-Man game where the devs and writers very clearly didn’t care about making it feel like the MCU like they seem obsessed with doing.
Cloud version? Hard pass! I'm not paying $60 to borrow a game that I can't play without an internet connection. How about $5 dollars? Just like when I used to rent games from Hollywood Video in 2004. Okay, inflation, $8 and I'd consider it.
Did they even mention this in the Direct? I don't remember them saying that, but I wasn't watching that closely at this point.
This was such an amazing surprise, not only am I a huge fan of Guardians of the Galaxy, a game that I thought had no chance of getting ported to the Switch when it was announced is actually coming.
Also even bigger news, think about this, what this means is Squares other games that I never thought would come to the Switch could most likely come now, FF7 Remake would be one of those!
No thanks Ubisoft you can keep it.
I really wanted this to be a thing and was super stoked to see it on Switch, but now it's confirmed to be a cloud version. Gross.
I have a stadia and know I can stream fine but really don't trust Nintendo online to be able to handle it well yet
@anoyonmus I kinda knew that. Just was coming down hard from the pre-E3 NS-Pro hypetrain. Hope it's at least real and will come SOME TIME. I don't mind 4K, but I'd love to get a few more frames and a bit more shinyness here and there.
@Jayvir It's funny how the world is pushing for evermore bandwith, like that 5G rollout over here in Europe, and then when there's finally enough bandwith we cream it with streaming not only 4K video content all over the place but now games too. In a not too distant future the Internet will be LIGHTNING fast but FEEL like it's 1999 all over again.
At least I could start a new EverQuest toon then...
Eh this game isn’t even that good. Don’t care if it is a cloud version
First cloud game ever I will give a serious try. Shame it's just a cloud game
Squeenix seems really confused as to what kind of audience Switch has and what their customers want. We get things like a low budget Crystal Chronicles port with no Local Story Coop, no Legend of Mana Physical in the west and FFX/X-2 Remaster requiring download for X-2 in the west. Now we get a cloud version of this that no one asked for?
"cloud version"
booooooo!
@GHROTIC yeah Square is weird.
But hey
We are getting life is strange on switch
Cloud game= nope. Even with my 100mbps connection it’s a big no for me. Control demo was good but I play my Switch all over the house and land where WiFi isn’t available. So it’s a no here
Does this makes possible a cloud version of Hogwarts Legacy?
Cloud Version? I sleep.
Oh the joys of having crap internet. This is a rare exception that I would have gotten (mm...rented?).
I understand some games like this we wouldn't get on Switch otherwise, but just sucks. Ah well. ;3
I'm sure a PS5 game will run GREAT on Switch......
Get excited for 10fps!
Cloud gaming. The death knell for video game preservation.
Wow lost all excitement when I saw its cloud only. Might as well play on PC if I have to be close to an internet connection.
@TheAwesomeBowser I'm not putting my money on Cloud Version games or even digital games too
@TheFrenchiestFry an understandable sentiment, but outside adequate mobile internet (or adequate stream settings, but I don't hold my breath for any of these cloud versions allowing a sub-720p resolution with a straight face), this support can effectively reduce the flexibility and accessibility - usually THE selling points of a Switch version - to those of a Wii U one at best. I wasn't surprised when Japan got offerings like these, but the west? Heck, Control even decided to take a least pleasant page out of Sony's Remote Play and police the end user's signal strength before and throughout the stream. Besides, we're more than halfway into the generation now - if one can't get their game to run on Switch, why not just wait a couple more years for the inevitable successor [and port something else in the meantime]?
They just announced the original Plague Tale on top, too, so I'm still wondering without a trace of sarcasm at this point - is someone living in the same alternate universe as Google seemed to with Stadia, or is it my own knowledge of western mobile internet growing embarrassingly outdated? 🤔
