Back in February this year, EA announced it had acquired the British racing specialist, Codemasters. The deal was valued at $1.2 billion and adds IP such as Formula 1, DIRT, Project CARS and GRID to the EA family.
Naturally, some fans are concerned about the future of the company under the FIFA and Battlefield giant, but according to EA's CEO, Andrew Wilson, the third-party video game juggernaut has made it clear its intention isn't to "come in and take over Codemasters", but help give it the edge.
The approach will be similar to the one EA has taken with the Apex Legends developer, Respawn Entertainment. Here's exactly what Wilson had to say, in a recent interview with MVC:
"Similar to Respawn, our orientation isn’t to come in and take over Codemasters; our orientation isn’t to come in and turn Codemasters into another Electronic Arts studio; our orientation is around the provision of opportunity. This industry is all about amazing, creative talent. And we see little upside in the indoctrination of that amazing creative talent. But we do want to provide them access to the things that we get by virtue of our position in the industry."
Codemasters will be granted access to an "amazing cupboard" of IP and technology, as Wilson puts it:
“At Electronic Arts we have this amazing cupboard of IP …and of technology, an amazing cupboard of marketing breadth, depth and reach on a global basis, and an amazing network of players. And so the way we’re thinking about this, and it’s how we worked with Respawn, it’s more about handing Codemasters a set of keys to the cupboard, and they can come and take what they need from that cupboard, but they get to continue to be who they are, because that’s what made them special in the first place.”
Codemasters CEO, Frank Sagnier, reiterates how "fantastic" it is to have EA's support:
“EA brings scale with its sales and marketing muscles, live services expertise, state of the art analytics platform, EA access, EA Play, Origin – just so much wealth that EA brings in terms of their services... EA is offering all the services, but not forcing us if it doesn’t fit. So it really is the perfect world at this point. And this is why I’m so confident about how much EA can bring to Codemasters and hopefully vice versa, because they listen and we listen too.”
The first game EA and Codemasters will launch together will be the upcoming F1 2021 title. What are your own thoughts about this acquisition? Do you think EA will give the racing specialists at Codemasters the same treatment as Respawn Entertainment? Share your thoughts down below.

Lol they are lying 😭. If sales slump they will integrate that studio so fast. I hate ea so much. We’ve seen what they can do to studios.
EA Asking us to trust them? Lol.
Ya ok LOL, see if that still holds in the next three years.

Sorry EA, but I don't believe in you...
Codemasters is only about 4 years younger than EA and had been doing alright despite all this nonsense EA PR is peddling, they bought that studio to churn out more soulless need for speed games.
Please don’t touch the F1 games, they’re brilliant. Just let them do what they do.
That is what they said about Bioware back in the day.
And look at Bioware today to see where this is headed in the next 5-10 years.
Or PopCap.
Or MAXIS.
Or... well you get the point.
EA BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
reply button pop up window also BAD!!!!
What about Metalhead?
EA: "Oh they're absolutely f***ed"
"our orientation isn’t to come in and turn Codemasters into another Electronic Arts studio"
This is more of a self-own than I think he meant it to be. "Yeah, we won't turn them into another EA studio, those ones just get ruined and die. Don't want that!"
Interesting that Wilson is implicitly conceding that being an Electronic Arts studio is a bad thing.
Ofcoz I would believe in infamous EA....
Okay I believe you
I already consider Codemasters as dead, anyways. I don't see the developer standing a chance at survival under their new ownership, but will happily welcome being proven wrong if the impossible actually happens.
But I'm quite confident that my first impressions will be proven correct.
EA: Nope, we're not going to ruin code...
Sale Exc: Sir, our profits are down by a penny from last year.
EA: SHUT THEM DOWN! LOCK THEIR IPS IN OUR CUPBOARD!
EA: “Hey gamers. We realize our brand is toxic af. Trust us it won’t happen here.
Gamers:
And China promised Hong Kong that they would be left alone for fifty years.
@Slowdive I am in your debt for this.
Ok, good to hear. I trust EA........ wait a second, I don't TRUST EA!!!
My prediction: they'll become support developers to FIFA and Madden.
I mean, they need to compete with Activision so might as well follow their plans of action.
All it would take is one single game to fail at sales, likely because of an EA management decision they force on every studio(hello frostbyte engine) that screws up a game and they'll be working as a support dev to push out Battlefield games until they shrivel up and die.
Like how respawn went from a balanced single player campaign with fun multiplayer (Titanfall) to a microtransaction filled F2P "chase the money" battle royale game?
And before you even tell me that Apex is fun, it's because Titanfall was fun and Apex is living off those assets. Then again this is what the average gamer wants nowadays, so I'm just a bitter old dude that finds comfort in playing fun indie experiences instead.
BS. Respawn and Codemasters will end up like Dice and BioWare, another “Electronic Arts studio”. Or if they slip up, they’ll be another Westwood, Visceral or Pandemic studio, as in shutdown completely, it’s not if, it’s when. All just a matter of time.
Notice how he accidentally gave away their true intentions by saying EA has an amazing cupboard of IP's Codemasters now have access to.
Very revealing that he said that instead of mentioning EA being excited to have access to Codemasters wide range of IP. Implies they'll have them working on EA titles.
EA has the reverse Midas touch, where everything they touch turns to... 💩
@Braneman
This is spot on, I think, as a similar thing appears to have happened with Toys For Bob over at Activision.
"that's why they are working on Anthem Next Grid"
"we'll just run them into the ground by demanding they make titles nobody wanted, riddled with predatory monetisation systems and broken online requirements, and then shut them down when they inevitably stop being profitable"
EA saying they won't be EA? Millions of eyes rolled at that claim.
More EA acquisitions mean more games on Xbox GamePass. Although Codemasters would have been better as a Microsoft company than EA.
"And the Congress will push me to raise taxes and I'll say no...'Read My Lips: No New Taxes'."
-George W. H. Bush, 1988 Republican National Convention
Yeah nonsense like that come to mind whenever EA speaks of such topics
My only hope is they may open the door for the back catalogue to exist on modern hardware. I would be well up to playing the Dizzy games on Switch ^_^
Hard to believe since they already tripled F1 2021's launch price here in Brazil compared to F1 2020's launch price. (Not an exaggeration)
Uhgg....why do I have such a bad feeling about this. EA track record when it comes to acquiring studios to help make them more successful is rotten. Too many examples to name and most of you already did anyways. Many of you mentioned F1 but my favorite series of theirs' is by far Dirt....Dirt 2, Dirt 3, Dirt 4, Dirt Rally and Dirt Rally 2 all excellent games and have given my Logitech wheel a real workout on PS3 and PC over the years. I was hoping we would get some Dirt game on Switch but with EA now in the mix and their tepid support for Switch, I expect it will never happen.
@Strictlystyles EA get too much flack, they are one of the few 3rd parties with a varied catalogue. Look at the incredible funding given for Mass effect Trilogy, an incredible remaster, literally 1000s of assets remade, compared to Nintendo who can't be arsed remastering 3 Mario games, and charge full whack for the privilege of emulation.
@locky-mavo what's wrong with Dice or Bioware? DICE are at their best. Bioware only have themselves to blame for Anthem and Andromeda, but that was mismanagement within the studio as EA where hands off. EA still plough money into their projects - look at Mass Effect Trilogy remaster - incredible.
Look at Mario Anniversary in comparison, lazy full price emulation jobs.
@liveswired the flack they get is well deserved. EA is one of the worst third party companies and in general they have more cons than pros.
SURE EA. We all know that you're going to kill them the SECOND things get hairy.
@liveswired if this is DICE at their best, I’d hate to see them at their worst.
Wow. They really take us for fools don't they?
