Star Wars: Republic Commando Is Getting A Limited Run Switch Release

Its always, always limited run, God CAN"T We ever just get a physical copy without the BS. With that out of the way what do you guys think? Is this game worth my time?

I played this game when it came out on PC like ... 140 years ago I think.

I was good. Real good in fact, like really shocked at how good it was given the IP, low hype, and unheard of team.

But like ... no where NEAR "worth a release today" good. I'm a baffled at why this is happening. Didn't have the hype or players base to count on nostalgia sales, Star Wars oversaturation is still in full effect, and by todays standards this game is going to suck.

Now let's get Shadows of the Empire.

I don't understand why a property as big as Star Wars is being published by LRG. Disney should be issuing wide retail releases themselves. Hell, I'm sure that smaller publishers would kill to be able to publish Star Wars games for retail.

@RupeeClock @Bizzyb : I am confident that DOOM Eternal will get a physical release, but considering the size of the base game (being over 17GB, which will require a 32GB cartridge), it would be silly to waste the most expensive cartridge on the mere base game when the DLC will more than likely fit on the same cartridge. I'd rather be patient and hold out for a complete physical release than a half-baked one requiring a separate DLC purchase (and download).

@RupeeClock Because it's a one-time only, you gotta buy it now or else risk spending 2X the amount later on eBay type of setup. A mere 5000 copies is the average print run. A normal release would mean I could wait 6 months and buy it on sale, and it'll be readily available. With this one-time printing BS, all that goes out the window.
At least for me, that's why I've come to really detest this sort of release.
It's even worse when larger publishers with deeper pockets are doing this, whereas the original spirit of this was to help indies get their games in Physical format. Star Wars isn't indie in any way, shape or form.

If anyone has other reasons why they don't like limited releases, feel free to add more points.

@Silly_G I hope you both are right. The worst part of it all is that the game was originally SUPPOSED to have a physical release. Then they just yanked it off all sites and cancelled all preorders. Never seen anything like that before

@Silly_G Excellent point about Disney and Star Wars. It goes back to my previous comment. Disney should be paying for this.

@Silly_G Disney distanced themselves from all the expanded universe stuff and rendered it all non canon. No chance they would release this stuff. I am, however, glad that these games are still around.

@RiasGremory @Bizzyb : Perhaps Bethesda was trying to keep the base game below 16GB, but because it exceeded it, even just by a little, they opted to pull the plug on the physical release.

I for one am GLAD this has happened, because it means that we are more than likely to receive a proper physical release with EVERYTHING on the cartridge later on. I don't buy physical releases to serve as glorified boot discs for DLC (which is effectively console-locked). I want it all on the cartridge, and I'll double dip if the option is extended to us (such as the Pokémon Sword/Shield Expansion Pass retail releases).

The game will require a 32GB cartridge, DLC or no DLC. It would make more sense to include the DLC on the cartridge and charge a premium for the additional content (and perhaps to factor the higher cost of the cartridge) rather than waste such a cartridge on a barebones release.

@RupeeClock : 16GB cartridges aren't that expensive to produce. There are enough "rumours" that have gone around regarding their cost that have been blindly accepted as fact, but I haven't seen any real evidence to prove that the cost of producing cartridges is prohibitively expensive. The fact that Switch versions of some games are priced LOWER than versions on other consoles should be proof enough that this isn't the case.

I am also curious as to what the costs are of UHD Blu-rays when compared to standard Blu-ray discs, but it seems that both new gen and last gen versions of many games typically cost the same (though I suspect that 100GB discs are a wee bit pricier as many film studios try to squeeze their UHD releases down to 66GB discs). While the costs of blank discs shouldn't be accepted as a blanket indication of how much it would cost studios to press discs, a blank 50GB Blu-ray costs three times more than a 25GB one (but I will always use a 50GB disc for a single project rather than split it between two 25GB discs).

Incidentally, Capcom has routinely issued BUDGET releases with games on 16GB cartridges (including Okami and the standalone release of Resident Evil: Revelations). Would those cartridges cost more than 50GB Blu-ray discs? Maybe so (costs have dropped dramatically since the Switch's launch four years ago). But I don't think that the difference in cost would be prohibitive considering that publishers have been using them since day 1 and the dramatic decrease in costs of compact memory devices since.

@EVIL-C Limited Run makes it very clear that they only do a single printing and any other runs can be done at developer/publisher request with another manufacture. Limited Run has just never been in a scenario where there is a high demand for a second printing.

That and there are other companies that do very short print runs like Atlus. They were notorious on the 3DS for doing shortprint runs.

I already downloaded it, had $5 in gold points so I only paid $10 for it. It's a relatively small download so it totally isn't worth paying an extra $30 to have it physical.

Was hoping to see this one from LRG soon, sadly unlike the premium version of Star wars Racing, I don't see enough to warrent the special edition, so standard it is!

@Wexter There's no issue with lack of clarity or not regarding print runs. That isn't the point.

I'm sure that in the past, for games that sold out very quickly which were not open pre-orders, there would be demand for more than just a few thousand. Judging by the resale values of many titles online, the demand is there. 5000 is an extremely tiny amount of something (in this case a piece of software) to be produced.

It's true that other publishers can do their own version of a game. For example, there were two hard copies of Streets of Rage 4 released, first from LRG, the other from Signature Edition Games.

Yes, but did Atlus ever do a print as low as 5000? I'm guessing not, if we cross reference that with sales data.

The shipping costs are another factor I really hate. $20 just on shipping, when I could get free shipping from Walmart or Best Buy, or grab it from the store when I'm nearby. It sucks.

My point remains, there's no advantage for the end gamer to have these silly limited prints of games. Either spend your money right now, without a months in advance warning like a normal release and risk FOMO, or spend even more later buying it from someone on eBay. It's an incredibly annoying practice.

Definitely gonna order. I will buy any Star Wars game that comes to Switch, and I will buy it physically if that is an option. I don’t really even care about physical games, I just like owning Star Wars things.

Anyway, as far as this game goes, I have it on my XB1, but I’ve barely played it. Really enjoyed what I did play though! Looking forward to really getting into it on Switch.

Hoping for more SW game announcements soon! I would absolutely love Shadows of the Empire.

I’ve seen a lot of Limited Run games at Best Buy. Will this be sold there to, or only through their website?

@HeadPirate I only played this game last year, went in totally blind and I loved it. No nostalgia rose colored glasses or anything, though I do love Star Wars. I think it still holds up, I mean, it is a shooter and the format hasn’t changed much.

I don’t mind Limited Run that much - it’s cool to see what they are offering now and then. However the issue is the delivery and potential import fees for those outside the US. If they had a UK subsidiary; I would be all over that.

@Wexter Well said! This iften gets overlooked that there is nothing stopping a company doing a full blown release. Limited Run isn't the people they need to be badgering.

@RupeeClock Witcher 3 is on 32gb cart. Also Asian version of Final Fantasy X/X2. Probably some other games too.

@EVIL-C It's not limited to a specific amount of units. That's usually reserved for indie games. These are open pre-orders for about a month to 6 weeks. I love LRG honestly. I've gotten a lot of games from them. They also have physical releases that can be bought at Best Buy as well.

@CTmatic Most are only sold on LRG. They don't announce what games are sold at Best Buy ever, you just have to search for "limited run games" on Best Buy's site a couple times a month and see what pops up. The other difference is these games don't come with the collector trading cards and have different covers from LRG's site.

Nice! Just pre-ordered Bloodstained 2 and the dual pack of No More Heroes, plus the Doom collector's edition and now this! Lots of good stuff. Still waiting on the Doom 64 collector's edition from October though.

@RupeeClock LRG have time after time messed about customers. They believe they have “fans” and not customers and they try and milk that to the max. They have constantly changed their processes and made it worse for their customers. They will break tiny games into single releases instead of collections. (The recent doom is a step forward in that regard) some of us have waited over a year for games after ordering. They are arrogant in their replies and generally horrible people to deal with.

I bought they first 2+ years of their releases before I got fed up with the way they acted.

@Wexter no they aren’t or at least they weren’t. Their whole Philosophy was - we and we alone will do one run and no one else. Then they changed the contracts they’d sign and games would be released after but not announced. Which is why they allowed streets of rage to be cancelled and gave a freebie to those that kept the order - they have them said - any game could get a release elsewhere. It’s the opposite of what they stood for

As for the doom eternal physical. Apart from skyrim every other bethesda game has half the game on a cart with you having to download the rest or even the dreaded code in a box so I'm not expecting everything on the cart if we even get a physical.

I bought the 360 version to play uprez on XB1 a while back. If this was seeing a general release then I'd happily pay £20 for a physical, but I imagine a LRG release will cost me c.£45 to get UK delivery.

My X360 version has an instruction booklet. That's as good as any tat LRG could throw in, so maybe I'll just pick this up in a digital sale some day and be content with it as an Xbox physical.

@ivory_soul Indies were the original spirit. Again, they've moved away from that. High shipping costs, a tiny window of time to buy it, unlike a standard release. It's like you skipped every point I tried making as to why this doesn't benefit the end gamer. In summary, higher prices, less availability.

You're also unaware that many of those Best Buy releases don't apply to Canada.

@EVIL-C they stopped that years ago and shifted to an open pre-order system when demand started to exceed a predetermined sale lot. That and they had to negotiate open pre-order system as initially they would have negotiated that they only print X amounts of copies. Hence my point as currently Limited Run is no different from someone like Atlus who have been known to only print a short supply of games. Except Limited Run makes it very clear they do so based solely on Pre-orders which are open for about 2-3 months more than enough time to snag a copy.

Have you ever asked why Walmart and Bestbuy do free shipping? Because it's to undercut smaller stores as they write off shipping fees because they can afford to. Small mom and pop businesses can't so people will go to the big box stores because it is technically cheaper not because it is moral. And Limited Run are not large enough to afford to do free shipping as while they make enough to stay in business to absorb such a loss is just not financially feasible for most small to medium businesses. Like come on man!

@GrailUK exactly! Limited Run started as a way for indi devs to release their games physically for a niche market. And even today it is a niche market as most people don't care if they get a copy physically or digitally! If you have an issue with Limited Run doing what it says on the tin you should be angry with publishers for going that route in the first place and direct your ire at them. Plus collecting games is I hate to break it to people a niche market and LRG sells to that niche market and producing physical copies of games are not cheap which is why ordering from them is more expensive than just buying the game digitally.

No one ever said LRG should do free shipping, at least I didn't. Very convenient you skip my point about also being able to walk in to a normal store and avoid said shipping fees, which is possible for normal releases.

Perhaps I should've originally stated that it's not LRGs fault, they're just capitalizing on a market. It's the fault of these large publishers being cheap and skimping on a retail release, like Ubisoft, Disney, Konami, etc... That's the real BS.

I currently have 2 pending orders from LRG, and just got Brothers: ATOTS from SRG. It's not like I never use them, but I don't have to enjoy it, and there's plenty to criticize. I've always been a physical collector and it sucks that in the digital age, I have a much harder time buying hard copies. There's too much uncertainty with digital releases. Look at the Wii shop. Look at the PS3 and Vita shops. 😔

@EVIL-C Glad, we cleared the confusion. And LRG does have a deal with Bestbuy where they can order games from them for stores... so that is a Bestbuy stocking issue if it is not in all stores. But, you did make the comparison to Bestbuy and Walmarts free shipping and put it as a knock against LRG when that also happens on Play Asia and even jersey stores like CoolHockey... if you think game collecting is annoying try being a jersey collector... so I just wanted to clarify why and how they do free shipping.

I used the Atlus comparison as it is the same idea. As some Atlus games on 3DS were near impossible to get even with a pre-order. I remember my Radiant Historia pre-order got cancelled on me and it was not carried in-store when I got there. Now it is $100+ dollars and while I'm annoyed luckily I can still enjoy it on my 3DS digitally (great game and if the 3DS store ever goes down... I know what I'm doing with a spare 3DS if you know what I mean ). And I just tried to get into the Mario and Luigi games and they are each about $100+ now... so yeah even store releases can be very annoying to get after the fact. A lot of this is always down to a speculator market. A lot of the lesser popular Limited Run releases you can get on ebay for relatively decent prices. Bloodstained jumped a few hundred because of speculators and interest due to Bloodstained 2. There was no way to predict as I remember the collector version on Switch going for $120 and the singular game for $70. It jumped that high in price due to speculators not due to natural interest and the price will come down in a year or two when interest normalizes like it always does. It is not exclusively an issue with LRG and their business model as even big publishers like Atlus and Nintendo do similar practices and just don't communicate it to the customer. Remember Devil's Third?

Though I still cannot fathom what came over Naughty Dog to release one of their flagship franchises through Limited Run... or Bethesda releasing a physical version of classic Doom through them... It really comes down to unfortunately LRG is a product of the times we are in where publishers would rather exploit their consumers and make a profit through LRG buying the rights to do the run and put the cost on the consumer rather than release a Jak bundle or Doom Classic bundle themselves. :/ So I don't get annoyed with LRGs I get annoyed with the Publishers who abuse the service... I did not buy the Classic Doom and the Jak games out of principle for that reason.

@Silly_G Because, it's pretty clear to me that Disney is snubbing Nintendo for the time being. No new Star Wars games ported or optimized for Switch. Only side games and rereleases are allowed, like Melody of Memory and generations-old ports.

I'm pretty sure Disney is not happy that Nintendo is expanding its brand to film and theme park attractions, but you can never be sure with these things.

Disney snubbed Nintendo years ago, while Universal was friendly and supportive of Nintendo. That's why Nintendo has leaned heavily into partnerships with Universal.
You'd think Nintendo and Disney would be a match made in heaven but they may actually see themselves as rivals in terms of popular character IP owned (regarding potential for merchandising, theme parks, film/tv adaptations, etc). This is similar to how Nintendo actually competes with Apple and Google more than with Microsoft or Sony when it comes to the gaming market.

@marandahir I agree. Nintendo during the last bit of the Iwata-era wanted to become more than just a video game developer/publisher. We saw this with them partnering with Universal and starting video shorts (Star Fox Zero ONA and the Pikmin ONA) films like Detective Pikachu and theme parks like Nintendo World. I think Nintendo is eying Disney as more of a rival than Sony and Microsoft.

I think Disney wants Nintendo's IPs to pump as a cash cow once Marvel settles and Star Wars has been hurting. But, they also see Nintendo as a potential threat if they start producing films and media beyond games and the odd manga. Detective Pikachu was a massive hit and The Sonic Movie showed Nintendo people might be ready for a Mario movie. Will be very interesting to see what happens in the next 5 years and I think Universal would rather have Nintendo as a partner against Disney dominance than another adversary for box office and streaming space.

@Snatcher so I loved it back in the day, but if I remember rightly I was working for Game at the time, and it sold poorly ... I did read somewhere that it only shifted something like 60,000 here in the UK. If you are a SW fan it's definitely worth a go, the original trailer had the Indie band 'Ash' as it's soundtrack ... good times!

A game sucking is very different from no one having any reason to like it. For this game, I think the people willing to forgive a full priced title where you're done all there is to do including the extras in 10 hours are going to be few and fair between, so the reception is going to be very negative. That was fine in 2004, but today ... well I saw a guy give "My Time At Porta" a negative review because it got dull after 90 hours.

@GrailUK really random but the Commando squad is Disney canon. They added them into the Clone Wars which is considered canon. Very short cameo 🤓

@EVIL-C Nothing wrong with one-time printings. It's great for collector's. There are pros and cons for sure.

Honestly, as an avid collector, LRG's model doesn't bother me. Most collector's editions even for regular games from other stores has a limited run or sell out pretty fast if it's popular enough, but no one complains about that. LRG has a smaller pre-order window, sure, but this goes for things like figure pre-orders and other items. You have to be in the loop and pre-order if you can. This isn't limited to video games.

@ivory_soul Collectors aren't representative of even 0.1% of the total gamer base. I have a decent personal collection ammased over almost 30 years, but I recognize that collectors are irrelevant and don't deserve special treatment.
