The ambitious port of Apex Legends landed on the Nintendo Switch earlier this month, so how does it hold up? Digital Foundry has now put Panic Button's conversion to the test, trying out the latest version of the game based on patch 1.07.
In terms of resolution, the game runs at 720p in docked play, with "dynamic resolution scaling dropping to 1066x600 minimum" and 576p dynamic in portable, with a "960x540 minimum".
DF highlights a number of cuts - textures lack an immense amount of detail, shadows are affected, the draw distance is pulled back and obscured by fog, effects are scaled back, and trees, bushes and ground object detail is also massively reduced. Then there's the removal of the "vast majority" of grass and foliage, which is considered to be a "cut too far". It results in a passable experience:
"What users effectively get is a good enough, albeit lower poly rendition of the game world. Everything is as it should be and renders properly at range. Think of it as a less complex but decent enough rendition of the world. Reflections are also retained, lens flares are kept, while cloth physics are present and correct. Enemies also render in at the same range, crucial to a fair experience for all players. Switch exclusive benefits are thin on the ground, but gyro aiming is included."
The performance is obviously the biggest talking point of Apex Legends on the Switch - with framerates tumbling to "the low 20fps" during firefights. Outside of this, the target of 30FPS is maintained, but that's still only half the framerate players on other console platforms, who are running the game at 60FPS.
"The main problem is that frame-rate problems intrude during confrontations with other players - exactly where performance should be at its best. On top of that, there's the sense the frame-rate may start to buckle simply by being in proximity to other players - an unlikely early warning system of sorts?"
Digital Foundry says the cutbacks are "so severe" that its final recommendation is to turn off the crossplay functionality (which is auto-enabled) to play exclusively with other Switch users and even the playing field.

I'm having fun with it despite the cutbacks. Since the Switch is all I have, it's the best BR game on the system.
Just because you can port a game to Switch doesnt mean you should. EA should of just ported ME trilogy, or even full Sims 4 game.
You know some people only have a switch, not every one can have two consoles.
Nothing like winning in Apex while taking a dump.
As someone who plays this on PC, I'm personally happy with the Switch port. It's nice being able to play Apex away from my PC.
@JR150 Glad to see you're having fun with Apex.
The game's pretty alright as long as you turn off crossplay, otherwise it's almost nigh unplayable. I found that out the hard way.
“On top of that, there's the sense the frame-rate may start to buckle simply by being in proximity to other players - an unlikely early warning system of sorts?" Is the most diplomatic way of saying the system can’t really handle this game I think I’ve ever seen.
@illmatic20xx technically EA doesn’t need to port those games either too.
As long as EA gets their investors satisfied with their “switch support”, they can port whatever they want
I thonk EA could go with porting their earlier and lighter Frostbite titles. Take thr least contentious but still pretty Battlefield (3, probably?) and put THAT on the Switch. Theh've already demonstrated they're unafraid to cut out crossplay with Plants vs Zombies, but picking a game where they have less to remove to get it to run okay would let them leverage it more, I think.
Im having lots of fun with the game, although the limitations of the switch are quite annoying at times. Also, I cant figure out how to turn off crossplay. Can anybody tell me?
@pilot
Hit the plus button and go to settings. In the "gameplay" tab, scroll down until you see 'cross platform play' and hit disabled. It's right below usage sharing and above club invites.
@illmatic20xx I disagree. Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean others don't either. I'm loving it, and I know others are as well. Just because we're more silent doesn't mean everybody dislikes this port.
I think it's very playable and I even have several wins in crossplay by now. You just have to adapt your strategy.
I wish they’d ported Titanfall 2 instead, that game has probably the best single player campaign ever
@HamatoYoshi
Sadly it's simply irrelevant nowadays. Apex Legends is the current, popular game that Respawn has under their belt. Maybe if we get lucky, we'll see Titanfall 3 release on Switch. But 2 was doomed to fail sales-wise since it released alongside Battlefield 1 and COD Infinite Warfare.
Think of it this way, the fact that a massive game like Apex runs on Switch means that a theoretical Titanfall 3 is pretty much guaranteed to run on Switch as well.
I am only having a switch and i had waited a year or more for apex legends to drop on the switch, i knew there would be cut backs but this was way too much and hence i dont play it anymore. But i m glad for people who can enjoy it.
It is absolutely dreadful. The graphics are appallingly bad but the perforce is shocking. We expect concessions but this is up there as one of the worst ports on Nintendo Switch. This is the game that screams out for a Switch Pro. I wish they had just left this alone. It runs and looks better on an iPad. Sorry but it’s awful in every way. Patches might save it. Might.
@Sculptor LOL! I have done that a many of times going from TV mode to bathroom setup and vice versa. Hey sometimes nature calls in the middle of online games and that's when the Switch reminds me how awesome it is!
@GrandScribe Yes because it can't handle more graphically demanding games, clearly /s The art style is also garbage.
I played this for a few hours, and it was fine. But after that, I tried Fortnite after not having played it for two years or so. And wow, that game looks way more attractive and feels so much better to play. I feel like I would enjoy Apex more than Fortnite on some other platform, but the Switch version just isn't the way to play for me. Still very impressive conversion, of course.
@HamatoYoshi Why not both? As someone who likes Apex, playing Apex got me interested and made me buy Titanfall 2 on PC. They take place in the same universe, so I'd like both. Titanfall 2 is really underrated.
If they got Apex to run, I don't see why they can't with Titanfall, it's the same engine, a modified Source engine, which is pretty tweakable (once used a tweak guide to run Portal on a non-gaming laptop years ago).
@JR150 Hence why I consider Titanfall 2 so underrated. Really a very overlooked game at the time.
Just have to add that I finished Titanfall 2 yesterday on Series X, and yeah that game is super underrated - the campaign is incredible. Not sure how well it would actually translate to Switch though..
I think this game is awesome I'm having a lot of fun playing it. I'm 35 so I'm from the generation where it was about gameplay not graphics all you millennials are spoiled with graphics or your internet sucks. Panic button did a great job! Thanks guys never thought I would be playing apex on switch
it is so sad seeing people rally for the Switch even when it's clearly time to buy a new console or PC
@grandscribe I think he's saying that if your frame rate drops then you might be close to another player about to diel
@jcboyer515 I think he just sad people had to turn a blind eye on the discrepancy of performance.
@jarvismp With respect mate, you clearly havnt played ARK or Skyforge. The performance Apex on switch is definitely something to criticize and it WILL be a turn off for some. But it is league's more competant than the "worst ports" on switch. I have got the Victory Royale 20 times in my 30 hours so far and dont know how that would have changed if I was playing on my xbox but at the very worst I would say that switch players are at a not insignificant disadvantage in firefights with large numbers of players in a concentrated area. That's when the framerate really does tank
@JR150 I doubt Titanfall 3 would run on Switch (or even the pro). Its not even in development yet, so it would likely be a PS5 and XsX/S game.
@Mr-Fuggles777
It depends. If they developed TF3 with the Switch in mind as a base, it could work. Look at games like Monster Hunter Rise that were developed for the Switch first.
Hey it works. And works good enough. As much as awesome 60fps, 4k UHD mumbo jumbo is, you don't really NEED those to have a fun experience.
Digital foundry guys are pc master race weirdos that cannot play anything that is not ultra high tech.
Fun and functionality comes first.
@JR150 it would hobble the other versions if they were held back 2 generations just for the switch unless it followed some more current releases and was stream only.
The switch can't even run PS4 era games without massive compromises being made, what chance does it have as the generation gap widens.
I play it with friends who are using other platforms and then it's not too bad, but I can never get a game when I turn cross play off ...
@Felixfromdownunder 20 “victory royal”? Lol liar.
@Mr-Fuggles777
Consider a game like DQ11S which was made for Switch and ported to other systems later which people still enjoyed. If a developer puts enough effort in, any game can function on all hardware.
@JR150 it was an upscaled 3DS game that got ported to the switch. Compare with more modern RPG'S, Outer Worlds barely ran on Switch and even after multiple patches is still miles behind the other versions.
I love the switch for what it is, but don't count on big cross platform games - especially as the generation gap widens and more developers start looking at the current gen systems.
