Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has announced the long-requested split-screen co-op feature is finally being added to Stardew Valley. This includes the Switch version of the game and will of course be part of the 1.5 update.
According to Barone, the number of simultaneous players may vary. In other words, some platforms will support up to four players, while others might be limited to just two players.
Yup! splitscreen will be coming to console and PC, though the number of simultaneous players might vary (on PC, you will be able to have up to 4, but on some platforms it might be limited to 2)
The co-op screenshots (above) appear to feature many new things - including new monsters, dungeon designs, items, and even a slime wearing sunglasses. Are you excited split-screen co-op is finally on its way to Stardew Valley? Tell us down below.

I love that this is happening, just like how I loved it when online play was added. That’ll be fun for a ton of people. But personally, I’ll never play anything but single player outside of maybe just casually poking around with a friend for a night while we catch up or something. I had a very personal experience/connection with this game. I prefer to keep it that way. Maybe that’s weird, but oh well.
Oh yes thats what i was waiting for. He does not stop to generate new awesome updates for this awesome game.
So is this game worth playing, this is coming from some won who does not play a'lot of animal crossing I want to know is this game still fun for ppl who aren't really into sims, I hear a'lot about this game and a'lot of you guys say its a really good game.
@Snatcher I had never played a game from the genre before Stardew. It’s a top 3 Switch game for me, and my most-played Switch game. I have since gone on to try others (Rune Factory 4 and Animal Crossing bring the ones I tried hardest with), and they didn’t really do anything for me. But Stardew is special.
There’s your couch co-op @Tasuki. Happy?
People love to complain about modern gaming compared to the days of old, and when it comes to things like microtransactions, on-disc DLC, paywalls, it's understandable.
But look at examples like this, a game roughly a quarter of the price of a 'full' RRP release that not only offers a wealth of content that's beautifully refined, but it consistently getting updated with new features and content for free.
Stardew Valley is a paragon of pro-consumer attitudes, it's no wonder it's such a commercial and critical success.
Barone is a legend. He's the sole developer. He does everything himself. I understand that Stardew has made him a wealthy man, but he has an unquestionable work ethic and he unquestionably deserves it.
I just hope that running split-screen doesn't affect the frame rate or speeds of the game.
@Snatcher It's the pinnacle of the genre as far as I'm concerned, I would unironically consider it one of only a few games that everyone should have on their Switch. It's definitely worth a go, as it's the sort of game that gets better and better the more you play it and understand it. Also, it's excellent for newcomers to the genre. I still wouldn't consider myself much of a fan of the farm sim genre, but this game has thoroughly hooked me with how well designed it is.
10/10 for this move. This will enable hours and hours of play time at home. Great value this product and so much is given!
Great game & fantastic support and development by the devs
Yes! Awesome move! I have considered buying a second Switch just to play this game with my Wife together, as Cross play is not a thing...
Can someone just hop in or do you have to both start in the town from scratch? Also is it possible yet to visit one another's towns and help one another out via local play?
@Entrr_username About time.
Very exiting. Played the game about a year and a half ago and now I might play again it with my sister.
!!! I’ve wanted this for about 2 years! This is my most played game on the Switch, will be great to play with my partner.
ConcernedApe is an amazing developer, how he’s done so many substantial content updates for free is really nice.
@Snatcher It’s like if Animal Crossing had proper characters and actual quality of life features. For example, crafting multiples of an item is super quick. For me the game is more goal-orientated but you can get decorative like Animal Crossing if you want. It might not be for everyone but if you like the genre this is the cream of the crop.
One of the most beautiful and engrossing games ever made. I remember catching an online glimpse of it on PC and the wishing began! Two wishes 1) having a stall for better economy 2) options to cultivate or modify the wild areas.
I'd love to dive into SV, but all those news about updates and enriched content make me worry a bit, am I not going to be a bit swamped at the beginning, in comparison to early players?
@Snatcher Me personally, I do not like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon that much, but Stardew Valley is fantastic. It is accesible with many different things to do. You can play how you like; you only like fishing, that's a viable method of playing. You prefer spelunking in caves for adventure, that is fine too. The towns people are fun to interact with, and it is satisfying creating and growing your farm.
@echoplex What do you mean
@echoplex You won't be swamped, it will start out slow and simple and you will make your way no problem. But, keep at it. I stopped playing after a few hours, months later I picked it up again and took off. Over 100 hours and I "finished" the game. It is truly a great game.
@Snatcher if you decide to pick up the game don't give up in the first few hours. I remember putting the game down because it wasn't clear what my goal was but a year later I picked it back up and once I got things rolling, the game was fantastic. Definitely recommend.
Okay, I love Stardew Valley. I played over 100 hours and finished the Community Center. It is probably in my top 10 games.
That said, I guess I am the kind of gamer that never goes back to a game after finishing. Sure, I did BotW DLC, but after that, I never played BotW.
While I think it is very good that Concerned Ape continue with DLC, I also wonder what kind of game he would make next?
This is one of the better games of the last 10 years
@DAHstroy I don't think it will affect framerate or speed. It's not a graphically intense game. I think it'll be limited to two players on Switch only because of the small screen.
I know it's mainly for 2 players but this could be helpful for single player as well like how party play in New Horizons is helpful for single player to get extra of limited time items and Redd's art
@Krambo42 That’s not weird at all, but very cool. I felt the same way about Dark Souls, and I ignored the multiplayer for that reason.
Nice. Now lets 🤞🏼 For crossplay 🙏🏼😀
I'm thinking of buying the game now with Couch Coop Play but can anyone tell me if there's Online Coop?
@Bankaj I love it myself assuming I can get through my game backlogs to get to each and every game. This is the trouble for those playing to many games at any single time. Or we could be called a GameFreak as well. lol
Finally picked up a copy of this, with the physical release this week. Looking forward to digging in (not an intentional farming related pun). Especially since Story of Seasons isn’t really cutting it for me.
