A small wave of new trailers have appeared for Nexomon: Extinction today, the Pokémon-like monster-catching game that's headed for Switch. Oh, and speaking of heading for Switch, we now have a confirmed release date, too.
The game will be launching on 28th August, so we won't have long to wait to check it out and see how it performs. The team behind the game say that monster-catching fans "can look forward to a return to the roots of the genre", which should sound good to anyone who's fallen out of love with Pokémon's direction over recent years.
Anyway, let's get on to those new trailers. The first one talks about the different ways that you can catch a Nexomon for yourself.
Catching Nexomon
With a minigame, various types of food, traps and more, there are many ways to improve your chances of capturing a monster in Nexomon: Extinction! Study which treats the Nexomon you are hunting likes to eat, which trap is most effective against their elemental type and practice the minigame to become a master tamer!
Exploring the World
In Nexomon: Extinction, you'll become a member of Tamer's Guild and join the fight against the mighty Tyrant Nexomon who are devastating the world. But the world of Nexomon is also home to plenty of funny, mysterious and thrilling side-quests, gathering opportunities, stories to tell and much more!
Eccentric Characters
Nexomon: Extinction is a game that doesn't take itself too seriously - at least not all the time! You'll encounter some genuinely hilarious situations and a refreshingly honest sense of humour throughout your journey. If you enjoy sarcasm and characters breaking the fourth wall, this is the perfect monster catching game for you!

Looks like fun, I'm all about it.
I am genuinely interested in this. Hope it ends up being as good as it looks.
I'm cautiously optimistic
TemTem didn't pull me in yet and the only Pokémon like game on my radar now is Cassette Beasts. This looks good, I'll wait for reviews though.
Looks fun for Pokemon fans tired of the same easy formula!
I enjoy TemTem a lot. I don't know what it is about recent Pokemon games I dislike; maybe expectations of the evolution of the genre is too high. However, these new copycat games seem to be doing a good job at what they are doing. I'm sure I'll end up buying this down the road.
This looks good.
I can't help but notice how similar to Pokémon this is, but I'm going to take it for what it is, and enjoy it as long as it's fun.
Definitely looks better than Temtem, but the uninspired monster designs and self-aware writing don't really do it for me.
I don't want a Pokemon knock-off. I want a Pokemon game that's actually fun and adventurous again.
Not to be that guy, but Pokemon has set a new, albeit not groundbreaking, standard for these types of games in terms of graphics and scope. This and Temtem feel like they're trying to compete with Pokemon from 10+ years ago rather than now. Again, not that pokemon is setting any records, but these games don't even look as good as the Let's Go games.
Also, why isn't there a name for games like Pokemon? I know it's not anyone's fault that news outlets and game sites refer to these games as Pokemon-like or Pokemon-esque. I just think we need a new term like Creature Capture or Monster Collecting.
Edit: Same thing for Monster Hunter and games like it. I think they deserve a new term as well, like... Monster Hunting. 🤷🏾♂️
Also, I didn't even notice monster-catching right in the first line. In which case, I think we should just use that instead of Pokemon-like.
Not willing to spend more than €25,- on it. If the price is within range then I am well open for a Pokemon-substitute. Pokemon SW/SH was my last hope for Pokemon and they missed it imo.
Well this got me interested enough to check out pre order prices and i managed to find it for £23. Seems like it could be worth a shot at almost half the price of Pokemon.
Has anyone tried the mobile version of it? It's free on the Play Store. I'm just curious. I'm guessing this game is bigger, but you can probably get a good idea of what it's like.
I'm not looking for a Pokemon-like game right now, so I'll pass. Looks fine for what it is though.
@Allspice I have it, not completed it though. It is fun enough but very generic and with a bit of grinding is too easy. It definitely doesn't have the depth or scale of Pokemon but it's a good, inoffensive time-waster.
@Kalmaro I'm also somewhat looking forward to Kindred Fates. It's super early in development but it looks like it's taking an actually different approach for the Creature Catching genre.
Worried that it's a bit too ambitious for its own good however
@eaglebob345 I've heard people refer to them mostly as Creature Catching games the most. I do agree though, that it is lame that most of these games are just referred to as pokemon-clones. Although a lot of them are clones, some of them like Monster Hunter Stories are completely different
@-Green- Backed, completely forgot about that game. Going to toss money at it for a steam release.
Okay interested!
I hope its a smash hit, hopefully it’ll help revitalize the genre.
I really want a monster catching game other than Pokemon to really smash the charts. We all know that Gamefreak need the competition, otherwise we will just keep getting subpar releases like Sw/Sh.
I don't think Nexomon will be that game. This might have given Black/White and previous gens a run for their money, but by todays standards it looks outdated.
Happy to be proven wrong though.
For the right price I can see myself playing this game
@eaglebob345 They do have a genre for it: Monster Collecting RPG.
It's just that Pokemon is the most prominent and high profile of them, so the comparisons are constant.
@MegaVel91 maybe the fact that they ripped off the name style of pokemon has something to do with it too....
At least try to make it sound original.
It looks alright, but I'm not sold on it yet. It's not bad, but these trailers don't make it look like anything special either. The characters breaking the fourth wall could get annoying if they overdo it.
Looks fun but I doubt I’ll buy this at launch. I can almost guarantee this will be 33-50% off in a future eShop sale. That’s when i’ll bite.
@YagaMaki I think that Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, or Yo-kai Watch have the best chance of putting up a fight. Unfortunately, they just aren't a priority in the west for Square Enix, Capcom, or Level-5... That said, I'm hoping Yo-kai Watch 4 comes over with a push.
I still think the monsters are lacking, but I’m excited to play the game all the same.
@eaglebob345 if anything is more about the clicks. Would you read an article talking about the new monster collecting game or read one stating it's the new Pokemon knock off. Attaching a big name to something smaller makes it easier for people to want to look at it. I do wish they would stop advertising games as the next Pokemon, dark souls, Zelda, etc.
looks good I will give it a go, but is it free?
@Snatcher No. It's not free.
Looking forward to it, day 1 for me.
Ouch those 4th wall breaking jokes in the character trailer were painful to read.
This couldn't be tackier, I'll be sad if this gains any traction whatsoever. It's an insult to the "bigger / bolder" Pokemon movement... this looks like a cheese ball level of digression.
