Today's reveal of Paper Mario: The Origami King for Nintendo Switch has confirmed several things - like the fact that the Paper Mario franchise will be making its Switch debut this summer and that we're suddenly feeling a desperate need to quickly play through all past games in the series - but it also adds weight to those Mario remaster rumours from earlier in the year.
As you may remember, a report from VGC told us that Nintendo is planning to launch remastered releases of "most of Super Mario's 35-year back catalogue" this year. The report was soon backed up by Eurogamer, and owning to the credibility of both sources, many are assuming the reports to be true. For all we know, announcements for such releases might be just around the corner.
However, the initial report also stated that "several other Mario titles" would be launching in 2020, including a new Paper Mario game. There's a long way to go, for sure, but with the first game announcement now correctly predicted, we're even more open to the idea of the rest following suit. Could we see similar announcements to today's staggered throughout the rest of the year?
If you missed the news earlier today, make sure to check out the new Paper Mario's game initial announcement here. We also shared a gallery of glorious looking screenshots, alongside our first look at the new game's box art.
Do you think the Mario remaster reports are true? Do you expect Nintendo to come out with plenty more Mario magic over the next few months? Tell us below.

I'd pick up a remaster of paper mario over this new one of it's just color splash 2.0
Paper Mario was included in a bunch of rumors. Not only does this lend more credibility to the 3D Mario remasters, but it was also mentioned in a rumor about a 2D Metroid game coming out. Could that Metroid helmet scene in the trailer have been foreshadowing, hmm?
Could we have odyssey 2 instead?
It looks like color splash mixed with something entirely new with ttyd sprinkled here and there.
Origami King and 2D Metroid...this is best year ever. 2D Metroid is best.
Never had the opportunity to play 64, Galaxy 1/2, Sunshine, 3D World etc so I would welcome re-releases of all of them.
C'mon, a new Paper Mario was a logical release at some point, not a wild guess. The ports may be true, but their credibility doesn't depend on this release...
Would literally do anything for 64.
Paper Mario, Mario remasters, Smash reveal, Pokemon DLC; all of this could surely be stretched to fill a 20 minute Direct, no?
@DCorp that Metroid tease at the end is too much for there NOT to be some kind of Metroid news coming our way. It would be over the top cruel for Nintendo not to at this point haha
I still don't believe they're remastering every 3D Mario game, and I don't think predicting a new Paper Mario gives it any more credibility. If they mentioned the origami stuff it might have done.
After the Star Fox racing thing last year, I just wouldn't believe it.
I'll be happy to be wrong though.
How Mario All-Stars 2, or even a port, never became a thing I will never know.
NEWS: REGGIE seen WEARING a SCREW ATTACK badge, ADDS more WEIGHT to Metroid Prime TRILOGY Reports.
For me the main positive from this is it shows Nintendo will not wait for a Direct to announce big games.
It can happen at any time!
Metroid fusion remaster🤔 @DCorp
Mario, Mario, Mario, please no more Mario. More Metroid, Starfox, F zero, Splatoon, Kid Icarus, Captain toad, Bayonetta, Excite truck, Donkey Kong, advance wars. That's were the real Nintendo magic lies.
Why can’t galaxy 2 be in the collection also?
@Moroboshi876 Exactly. A new paper mario releases every 4 years.
@Octane I'd guess anything further away is at risk of being delayed, so they'd rather just do individual announcements of things they're sure of right now.
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 without forced motion controls? Yes please!
Would love Mario 64 remaster. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing game still but my god the camera was nasty some times.
Sunshine and 64 would be great remastered and re-coded for 60fps. On the other hand I’m not fussed about the Galaxy games coming over to Switch. The lack of IR would be a diminishing factor, imagine attempting the Perfect Run on Galaxy 2 without IR... Also playing with the tiny Joy Con to replicate the original control scheme wouldn’t be much fun, at least for me. Besides, both games can be emulated on PC at 4K, with HD textures, and played with original controls when using a Dolphin Bar.
I'm a believer! Let's go!!
Galaxy Remaster would be a wet dream!
@quinnyboy58 If the remakes are real, I doubt that Odyssey 2 even exists. I'm thinking that the remakes started off as 1 level dlc for Odyssey, before they decided to remake the games in their entrity in the Odyssey engine.
Eh, no! Nintendo won't remaster all 3D Mario's and put them on one cart. They much rather release them seperately on the e-shop, full price and probably not even remastered!
@TheFullAndy Yes, it's great to see a big game announced out of nowhere. I think they realised people thought the line up looked thin but didn't want to do a direct, so thought why not announce it.....
As much as I'd love for it to happen, I'm not believing these remasters of the 3D Mario games are real until I see them. 64 and both Galaxy games are among my favorite platformers of all-time and I'd buy each individually if I had to.
@redd214 Where have you been living? Hahah I´m joking, but it´s surprising indeed.
Interesting times and Paper Mario looks awesome. Hopefully more announcements soon even if it's games in progress! 😊
A mario 64 remake would be real nice.One benefit It could have is a camera easyer to control for those that struggle with it. It also might even help ignite a banjo kazooie/tooie remake from Microsoft. but I dont think it would ever replace the original mario 64 for me because Id prefer the original charming polygonal graphics/physics I admire from that unique era of gaming.
I'll happily take these remasters over Origami King even though I've already beaten all the 3D Mario games front to back.
Origami King certainly lends credibility to some of the earlier rumors, but as usual I won't get too excited until something is confirmed.
No, because you're missing a key part of the leak. The leak said it would be a good Paper Mario game, similar to the first two. That's still up in the air and if it doesn't come to be, then the leak was Fake News and Reset Era can forever be discredited.
I really hope all the rumors are true this time.
@DCorp there's a rumor of a new Metroid, any word if its a remake or a brand new game?
@Kalmaro well its ether this or nothing
2D Metroid, anyone?
Just remaster/remake the entire back catalogue of franchises. God knows I'm gonna buy it.
Especially when it comes to games that have an entry on the Switch. So 3D Mario, 2D Mario, Luigi's Mansion, Zelda, etc. And Metroid Prime, Pikmin, for the future. Being able to play all the games on one system would be a dream.
The Metroid nod at the end even moved in 2D. There was also a Donkey Kong head and I'm sure I read somewhere there might be a 3D Donkey Kong Country game coming.
@the_beaver before the Switch I hadn't had a Nintendo system since the Super NES, was all PS between the SNES and Switch
@ImagineerNik Believe it or not, that Star Fox racing game rumor was two years ago... time flies.
@redd214 Ah ok, that makes sense then.
@Yosher I'll never understand people. You guys want new games, or old ones?? Unless you really hate Paper Mario for any reason, I don't understand this comment.
Of course I also want the remasters of all 3D Mario games, but... Perhaps I'm odd, but I will always consider new games as the main thing; the rest, like Xenoblade remaster, for example, is just secondary.
I really, really hope that if there is a SM64 remake that it’ll include the SM64DS assets or at least make it optional.
@the_beaver I want new games, but I want GOOD new games. Unfortunately the new Paper Mario just seems to build upon what Sticker Star and Color Splash set up and I did not enjoy those games at all, while I did very, very much love the first three Paper Mario games.
I would absolutely 100% positively love a new Paper Mario game more in line with those games and pick that up over a remaster of the 3D Mario games but that doesn't appear to be the case. So with me having loved the original 3D Mario games, I'll happily pick up the remasters for Switch over what appears to be another shoddy (IMO) attempt at 'Paper Mario'.
I have no interest in Mario remakes. I still find Mario 64 and Galaxy 1+2 very enjoyable. Make the originals available on the Switch, sure. I’d rather have a sequel for Mario 64 done in the original style. I’d rather have DLC for Odyssey.
I hope a new Mario golf and striker will be on their list.
Loved Golf!
What's the rush? When Nintendo is ready to announce a Mario celebration event they will. It's not like the Switch has just a few games. The catalogue is huge.
@KBuckley27 I'd rather have nothing then since, if this is just another color splash, I won't be buying it .
Can't wait to play all these remastered of classic Super Mario games and these were the games that evolve the franchise, not the cookie cutter 2D reboot ones like New Super Mario Bros. U.
@Kalmaro well I and many others would rather see something new come out this year for Nintendo than this year be nothing ports of old games
@KBuckley27 Me too, this has yet to show that it's new and worth buying yet though.
@Chowdaire Damn. Is it really?!
Perhaps 2020 will be the year of Mario
@Chowdaire
That's one rumor I'm glad didn't came to fruition
But a new 2D Metroid would be nice, like others here remembered
@alexybubble Hadn't even thought of that idea, that does sound interesting.
When I think of it there were two Zelda games (both from Gamecube) remastered in HD for the Wii U so maybe it's Mario's turn for a couple of remasters. Seems like Switch is the right console for it considering how well it's doing and might have a longer life cycle.
@Moroboshi876 It really wasn’t. If you look at the developers comments the were saying they didn’t know where to take the series after color splash. Plus the bad reception to both games and they didn’t seem to realize what caused it, so it wasn’t a guarantee.
Ports of Mario Galaxy 1/2 plus Metroid Trilogy? Could have sense
@Yosher Until we see what this new Paper Mario is capable of, let´s keep our hopes up. I wouldn´t understand if Inteligent Systems did again what people have been complaining about. It´d be so stupid it´s hard to imagine.
I think the Mario games are imminent for a winter release. The new Paper Mario game was by far the most unlikely prediction in the leak, so I’m just waiting for a reveal.
@Q1220G OK, but it can't be a shocking information either. Can't be totally unexpected.
Funny, though. Every person I know that has played Color Splash loves it. Certain games receive not so good reviews but after some time grow on people. Happens with some Yoshi and Kirby games too.
YOU CAN ALREADY BUY ALL OF THESE GAMES
I am so sick of Mario
@redd214 so are you a nintendo fan if you havent played nothing?
@antonio2244 Get used to it.
@mother_brain_85 I consider myself a Nintendo fan yes
I missed some big games throughout their history but I'm happy to enjoy their games now with my kids just as I did when I was a kid
Now I see what's happening, these sources also state there won't be a Nintendo Direct in June. Nintendo apparently will announce these games individually and probably out of nowhere.
Still, I hope we can see some gameplay at least.
@KoopaTheQuick You're right, it would be pretty cool!
I hope one of the "other mario titles" is a new M&L rpg
@Borshi I would have loved for it to have been real. Another Diddy Kong Racing style game with Star Fox combat layered on top is a dream. Slapping Retro onto the project is just icing on the cake.
I don't see how another Paper Mario game makes the remasters more likely. It's another game in the series, not a remake.
I still want Super Mario 3D World because I never got a Wii U, but a remaster of Super Mario 64 would also be nice, especially if they made a few tweaks like better camera control, controller vibration completely optional motion controls that are not required for any part of the game whatsoever, and some surprise playable characters like Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, and Daisy. Yes, I said Peach. After you beat the game, she's rescued.
@DrDaisy My assumption is because the original rumor included a new Paper Mario being speculated along with the Mario remasters. So I think the connections being made is if one part of that rumor has come to fruition, there's a chance the rest of it will. But who knows? Someone may have just gotten lucky by predicting a new Paper Mario game. The Switch was due for one
@quinnyboy58 totally understand the want for new content, but Galaxy will be new for me.
@tourjeff hell yeah!!!! One of my favorite 3ds games.
Im down for either a 2d Metroid or new donkey Kong. Well any of the rumored games really 😃
Trying to contain any excitement over Origami King as I don't want to be disappointed again.
Luckily I only have to keep my discipline for 2 months.
@FargusPelagius knowing that Mario is their flagship franchise, I’d say your pleas are falling on deaf ears, chap.
I would also love for more representation of the other game franchises you mentioned, though.
@Kalmaro well, colour splash was pretty good, and this looks to have done different stuff.
IF it is true and IF they bundle all 3 Mario games in one I might consider buying it.
I wouldn't pay full price for a remaster of any of these individually and certainly not without extra content.
@DCorp Mario + Metroid... Metroid Maker? Hmmm
@Alpha008 Color splash was an okay game. Just not a good paper mario game.
@Kalmaro that is a ridiculous claim. It looks nothing like Colour Splash. It could be argued there are elements of Sticker Star's battle system in there if you look closely, but not Colour Splash. And this looks far better anyway.
Am I the only one not expecting the Metroid thing at the end to mean anything significant? I'm keeping my expectations low, it could just be a little cameo they've dropped in. Could even be amiibo support where you scan a figure and get a massive cardboard outfit to wear. Just don't go moaning if it turns out to be nothing. You'll only have yourselves to blame.
@Baker1000 I didn't say it looked the same graphically. This is a switch game so of course it looks better, amd they are making things more 3D with the origami thing.
My point was that it looks the same in that you don't have as much companion interaction in battles.
@KoopaTheQuick We can only hope.
Throw enough crap rumors at the wall, and eventually someone is going to be right. That doesn't mean they knew anything.
It means they made a lucky guess.
excited for this as well!
I want the rumours to be true. Very much.
Whilst we all love that the rumour mill has started producing, all I really want is MP Trilogy HD to be real and released. Stop beating around the bush Nintendo, this is long overdue.
@NoNoseNosferatu aye I know Mario is their money maker. I never liked Nintendo for Mario, I like some of the spin off games, Smash, Kart, tennis, but I much prefer Nintendo's gigantic catalogue of other IP.
Same with Sega and Sonic, hate alot of sonic games (adventure was a rare exception as was 2 to a lesser degree), preferred Alex kid, afterburner, golden ax, Shinobi, Streets of Rage etc.
Perhaps I just hate forced mascots?
@FargusPelagius Perhaps... perhaps. I adore the Mario games and most of the rest of Nintendo's catalogue. I say most because I haven't played all of them. (yet) I understand your reasoning though.
Whether the Mario Collection releases is a matter of when, not if.
Also curious if Galaxy 2 is included in the collection alongside 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1.
I can imagine Zelda will get the same treatment for its 35th.
@Kalmaro Hopefully not. Nothing against Color Splash, but Paper Mario is a series that is not afraid to experiment, so hopefully they will make it significantly different than the last installment.
@westman98 Maybe there will be a blend of Galaxy 1 and 2. If I remember correctly, Galaxy 2 was originally envisioned as a DLC for the first one.
@Heavyarms55 Let me hope!! xD
@rockodoodle That is a good point when it comes to remakes and remasters. To good portion of gamers it will be a new experience. For me, I never played Sunshine, so if the rumors are true, I am looking forward to playing that one
@Moroboshi876 You are 100% correct. I LOVED color splash (except the misspelling of COLOUR for UK audience haha!!!) the humour was so great...I spoke to someone a while back who ''hated it! total crap! worse EVER' me: '' did you play it?'' them: ''well....no..it looked crap''
@Chowdaire
I'll admit that when you put it like that it sounds really fun hehe
Back when this was somewhat a possibility, I did wonder if they could make it better by mixing F-Zero into it.
@Kalmaro my point was it looks nothing alike gameplay wise because there's none of the paint stuff and like you said they have the origami mechanic. And you'll be able to have a range of companions instead of one. Although it appears to be just overworld enemies you recruit rather than named characters.
Origami King looks excellent, nobody can complain about that presentation. As for the remasters, if I get SM64 and Sunshine I'll be more than content. Galaxy, while fun, wore off quickly. I don't even remember most of the game beyond the first few stages. Galaxy 2 can just die right off though. Very clear it was just a collection of discarded stages they lumped together and repackaged as a new game. Aside from NSMB2, that's quite possibly the worst Mario game (by Nintendo) ever made.
@GoblinKing86 everything you just said... was wrong.
Who could have foreseen paper Mario not coming to the switch since they've gone through many ips already? Predict fzero and then it appears and I'll be shocked and a believer
@JMR_Alden because it’s ok when the name of the company is not Sony
@GoblinKing86
Damn, as takes go that's positively molten. Having played Galaxy 2 for the first time only recently, I strongly disagree with you about the overall quality of the game--it's pretty fantastic--though I agree that it does (IMO) give the impression of being somewhat of a Frankenstein's monster. Honestly though, it's brimming with so many ideas I really didn't care.
@MatoFilipovic
I'm highly doubtful that Nintendo will alter the content of structure of any of the Mario games in the collection.
Going by the rumors, it seems like all the games will be HD remasters, likely with some control changes to Mario Sunshine due to the lack of analog triggers and Mario Galaxy 1 (and 2 if its included) due to the lack of IR pointing.
Mario galaxy 1 and 2, yes please amazing games. Oh and bring Starfox 64 and Zero without the dodgy control method.
Mario Golf!!! PLEASE
