In today's surprise Nintendo Direct Mini it has been confirmed that the remaster of Criterion Games' classic open world racer Burnout Paradise is finally coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020 after debuting on PC and other consoles back in 2018.
The game took the Burnout series - famous for its entertaining arcade-style racing and emphasis on entertaining crashes - into an open world and set the template for many a racer over the previous decade. Despite that, many people would argue it never got better than Criterion's Burnout Paradise, so it's excellent news that EA has decided to bring it to Switch.
Burnout Paradise Remastered contains all the DLC released for the original games plus visual tweaks and improvements. On other platforms it featured resolution upgrades and 60 fps gameplay and it has been confirmed via the official press release that the Nintendo Switch version will feature the same framerate and bespoke 'pinch-and-pull' map control, too, so hopefully the Switch version will stack up favourably against the two-year-old versions on more powerful platforms.
Regardless, it's great news that this fantastic series is coming to Nintendo's console and having Burnout join the other racers on Switch will be a treat. There's no solid date beyond '2020' right now, but we'll be keeping an eye on this one. Until a trailer arrives you can check out the blink-and-you'll-miss-it announcement in the video below:
Let us know if you'll be taking the driver's seat in Burnout Paradise Remastered on Switch below.

I dont hate Paradise. Quite the opposite. But it's no Takedown or Revenge.
Thank goodness we finally have am open world racing game.
Blimey...maybe EA read my rants! I hope they have full confidence in this selling and not skimp on the retail version. Burnout and Bioshock on Switch are going to do really well. This and Star Wars Racer (and too much other stuff lol) have made my day.
The game swallowed a ton of time when it came out on the PS3.
Sweet I will check this out. Although I prefer Burnout 3 and revenge
@PhilKenSebben that's fair. I'm a huge fan of the series and whilst Paradise is great, it's not in the same tier as Takedown/Revenge, it's just a different kind of game.
I guess it's time for me to get my second copy
Took me a while to get into Paradise on PS3, but it's a solid entry and most welcome on the Switch. Day 1 purchase, but Burnout 3 Takedown is still king.
@antdickens It is, and it's great at what it does, but I miss that old style a lot. Nothing had ever filled that good imo. Paradise is good consolation prize though.
Man I would love a physical version of this like the 2k ports. Even though all of those are download required which was expected. Love having physical versions of games I've only owned digital before.
Sold, perfect game for the switch!
Now this was a highlight of the Direct for me.
Good news this. Perfect for the switch. This, Star Wars racer. The Jedi game dropping today... and so much more to process - nothing was mind blowing but lots was pleasing
Great game but I worry they may have left it too late.
If you only own a Switch then fair enough but the vast majority of people nowadays own one at least 2 consoles and when you can pick it up on others for next to nothing will people be willing to pay top wack for portability
I couldn’t play this game at all. The camera is too low for me can’t see what’s coming up! X x x x x
Probably the only "new" announcement of the direct? Pathetic.
I remember disliking the demo on the 360 before it launched. Eventually gave it a try and did end up falling in love with it, still prefer 3 though.
This'll be the best arcade racer on the Switch, then? Hope they make a new one at some point. Wish they'd add splitscreen multiplayer, something absent from tons of games from the PS360 era.
this game could be perfect for portable mode on the go, lucky for people who have never played burnout paradise.
I was just wondering a week ago why I never buy racing games despite really liking them back in the day when my brother bought them for his original XBOX. He owns Burnout 3 and Revenge and we used to play them a lot. I like Paradise too but it's different. I'm glad it's coming. It's been so long since I played it that it'll be a completely new experience. If I decide to buy it that is. I already own it on Steam so I'm not sure yet. It would be nice to have a racing game on the go though.
@Dragonslacker1 I had the exact same problem, the camera is stupidly low. I ended up using a piece of blu-tak shoved under the Xbox right stick to keep the view higher. I would love if they gave more view options..
@PhilKenSebben Same
Good game, even if it wasn't necessarily what I look for in Burnout. Have it on PS4, I'd highly recommend it to Switch owners when it launches.
Sweet. Normally I don’t double dip on games, but this is a game I would double dip on. I already own this game on Xbox 360 and PS4. And I would be happy to buy this game again for the Switch so I can take it on the go.
I've been waiting for an announcement of this. Pretty happy as I loved Takedown and Revenge.
I've not played a driving game on Switch yet (aside from 'Kart' games) - how does lack of proper trigger shoulder button work. Is it just full accelerate all the time?
@nmanifold wish I would have thought of that! X
This is the ONLY game that caught my attention in the Direct.
And why is it a Mini? It's almost 30 mins.
It's a great game. I think I bought it for under $10 last year for the PS4 Pro.
In such difficult days this filled me with joy I'm really longing for!! 🤩
I wish it was.. literally any other entry of the series.
This may be the worst one (minus the first), I may have it in 4K on X1X - but I'm still pretty sure I'm gonna buy it on the Switch.
Meanwhile, the guys who created Burnouts will release their own game on the Switch, too.
They make the Dangerous Driving games now that they're free from EA.
Of course, EA kept the Burnout name.
But there probably never will be another one.
Thanks, EA..
I was just thinking the other day, playing asphalt 9, what a great addition burnout would be to the switch.
Perfect! Will wait for it.
I have it already on PC. It's a great game, even though I hear Burnout 2 and 3 are better (I want to play them, but they aren't on any Steam). I really enjoy the freedom of just driving around crashing into things for the fun of it.
This direct is inflicting a killing blow to my wallet.
Yes Burnout Paradise on the go, love Criterion's other driving games so definitely getting this one.
Oddly drawn to this one. Might have to get it.
I’m a little annoyed with EA on this. They should have just said it was on the way instead of trying to dodge the question. But I shall buy it. Anybody wanna port Blur as well??
It's cool to see this fantastic game finally coming to Switch, even if almost two years late. Is that all you've got, EA?
OMG YES! One of the few games i've been missing on the Switch! And funnily enough, another one that i wanted was Borderlands! This was a great direct! Now i just need some Sims and Anno (and Planet Coaster, but obviously that's not within reason currently) and I'd be set. But this will keep me busy for quite some time!
@construx I played a lot of Revenge and a bit of 3, but I don't know, I'm fine with Paradise, it would be weird if they ported the PS2 ones first, but now I want them after people mentioned it 😅
...thanks for mentioning Dangerous Driving btw, didn't know this was a thing
@NullPointerExcep
They're made by the same guys (now independently), so the series are basically the heart and soul of Burnout, finding a new life!
Please support the developers and buy their game when it comes out on Switch (or right now on any other console, where their games are already available)! They deserve it so much!
Can't wait. I hope it runs well even in handheld mode.
FAIR WARNING : They changed the game a bit and abandoned it with bugs on the PS4 version. Get dangerous driving 2 when it comes out, it will be the same, and you don't have to support the greed machine that is EA.
@Fido007 Changed it in what way? You're having me a little worried haha
The worst Burnout game by a mile. It looks incredible, but free-driving in a racing game doesn’t work (unless you learn the entire map, perhaps?). I had it on Xbox 360 years ago, and was disappointed, but bought again for PS4 in case I’d misjudged it - and it still disappoints. Which is such a shame as I adore the other Burnout games.
@Bondi_Surfer it’s possible to learn paradise city and to get to know shortcuts and to be honest I have it on PS4 and I haven’t put that much time into it I reckon with dipping in and out on switch it’s even more possible to find your way around would rather have revenge remastered tho
@StefanN nothing gameplay wise, sound effects, visual changes - removed old game developer billboards for some non desirable crap, and matchmaking is broken... bad. Not even gonna mention the car bugs they made updating the game then leaving it for the masses to rage quit a few weeks later.
This could (and most likely will) be the first racing game I own on my Switch. Held off getting GRID, GRIP, and others, but I’m glad this is coming back
Ok, this is great news and another reason to add crossplay to the game 🤞😁
Played it tons on 360. I was in no rush for the Remastered version, but then XBONE had to have the download version at £5 one sale not too long after release. XD
Have yet to touch it due to space and wanting to play it on a 4K screen. As for Switch, I'll wait for a price drop, seems likely it'll be cheap rather quickly as well.
@PhilKenSebben Yup, Takedown would have been a day one for me. No dice on this one.
@AnnoyingFrenzy 2 and 3 aren't open world. The environments, gameplay and racing, even soundtrack in 3 are all better, though. The weird thing about Paradise was that a lot of the time you had to make your own route through the city. At first, I pretty much checked the map EVERY, turning I made. Totally not fun. Driving in the open after events was cool and doing parking challenges and such. They put in collectibles (smash x amount of billboards etc.) but I never bothered with them.
Tbh, Revenge and Takedown ps2 game. Makes sense for a remaster, they need it and to play on modern platforms... So EA picked Paradise, a 1 gen old game, anyway, because it's easier and they know the last 2 generations of gamers played it. It's a shame, if they did 3 with online support I would have played it online for many many many hours and 100% it probably. Though, accomplishing some of those signature takedowns was hard enough back in the ps2 days and I don't think I even used the weird little green car much haha
@Jayofmaya Oh I know 2 and 3 aren't open world don't worry. As for Paradise, I used to check the map a lot too, but I found that just driving aimlessly letting the road take me where it went was way more fun. Smashing billboards that I came across was a great form of catharsis for me as well (as well as just other cars in general). I totally understand those that don't like this game though, it is a major departure from the previous beloved entries.
Great, with Asphalt 9, There good options for "arcade-action" racing games, now, I hope for a NFS, at least, some like Hot Pursuit 2010, or Most Wanted (2005).
While, Waiting for Burnout Paradise in Switch (Really I have PS3 and PC versions), but a portatil version is very welcome, XD
@NoTinderLife I more or less took 'mini' as an indication that it was simply a quickfire Direct whose sole intention was to get the ports and remasters out of the way so Nintendo could use a full Direct to focus on the new software they have coming for the latter half of the year.
We do know they've supposedly got a packed holiday, and it was obvious any Direct wouldn't have come before Animal Crossings release. Now we that and the ports out of the way, Nintendo can focus on the heavy hitters.
Finally something from EA that's worthwhile and not another half arsed FIFA attempt. I love the Burnout series so I'll be picking this up
I know this may seem like a dumb question but is this as fun as burnout 1 on the GameCube... That's the only one I've played
