Sega has released an odd but amusing update for Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD. Sadly, though, it's currently limited to the Steam (PC) version of the game.
It allows AiAi and friends to run around in a cube, triangle or star instead of a regular old ball. To activate this feature, all the player has to do is type the word "cube", "triangle" or "star" on the character selection screen with their keyboard.
The official Monkey Ball Twitter account further clarified this update was for Steam users only and mentioned how players may not necessarily be able to clear every stage of the game with the new shapes.
With any luck, this update will be added to the console versions in the near future. Are you still playing Monkey Ball on the Switch? Leave a comment down below.

aaaaaaah, that's why SEGA teased those weird shapes months ago hahaha.
from time to time the monkey ball account postet videos from these new "balls". would love to get it on switch
Just what everyone was demanding! Monkey Cube!
I was just playing monkey ball 2 the other day and wondering how hard it would be to play as a cube
They could've ported the superior iterations, but nooooooooooo
I bought it and had a blast, I don’t care what any of you say. Sure, it’s not as good as the first two, but fun can still be had. I hope this update comes to the switch version, I’ll be waiting.
@cptspaulding I bought it. Haven't had much time to play it yet, but it seems fun, the little I played.
I wonder, do they affect the game physics? Or it's just a model swap for the ball? If they provide different physics I'm willing to replay the game 3 times for each changed shape.
Sega is giving us cheat codes again and not DLCs? What is this the 90s again? Seriously Sega we need more of this, could had just put this feature in the game from the very beginning on all versions.
@Gridatttack They said not all stages can be completed with the new shapes, so I assume that affects the physics in some way? Or maybe just the objects won't fit in certain holes?
@gloom I was genuinely asking if anyone bought this on the switch. I was a big fan of Super Monkey Ball 2 and was very disappointed this was the version they release for switch over SMB2. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@Gridatttack due to not all levels being guaranteed clearable with the new shapes, it likely affects the physics. Good luck completing the game with them all, considering that disclaimer! Honestly, seems like they could’ve at least tested that much though...
@cptspaulding I have, but found I couldnt play it on hand held mode as made me motion sick. Then played it on TV and it's not bad, but no scratch on 1 or 2
I bought it too on the Switch and I played it a little longer. It gets really tough near the end. But still, I enjoy it. Haven't tried it with the latest patch and a better camera.
@cptspaulding I bought it on Switch because I had fond memories of playing Monkey Target with my family. Unfortunately the mini games are less than an afterthought on BBHD.
Not even worth trading in since they slashed the price a few weeks after release.
I had hoped for an updatw which would make it as nice as monkey ball 1, but alas… bac to the old cube it is
@DanteSolablood Monkey Target in Super Monkey Ball 2 was the greatest mode in that game (imo). Monkey Target in SMB1 was good too, but the mode in part 2 was awesome. I would play that for hours with a buddy of mine, the monkey glitches could get hilarious.
That‘s no triangle (polygon, 2D), that is a pyramid (polyhedron, 3D)! If they would have made a tetrahedron, I would understand them to choose a simpler word, but that is just a pyramid!
well as its pretty poor game, who cares!
Oh great—penalising those who bought the more expensive version of the game.
Thank you Sega.
Super Monkey Shape
God, this looks like a nightmare. I love it
Maybe on Switch Pro
@ShadJV @cptspaulding
Well, sounds like a challenge! I assume the 30 seconds level from Cobalt Caverns and the last level of volcanic pools can't be completed due to not being able to go fast enough, but I suppose most stages shouldn't be that bad.
His balls are weirdly shaped.
@gloom It's a great game. I actually think it's just as good as the first two, except for the lack of fun minigames. The level design is as tight as ever. Having bosses is weird, but it makes a nice break from the regular levels.
@vanYth Was about to say this! The other one may be a great icosahedron but I can't see well from that still.
I can see this making for an interesting speedrun at a future GDQ, get on it people!
