Nintendo has just rolled out what is likely to be the final update for the 3DS this year. Oddly though, there's no official mention of stability improvements. Instead, Version 11.13.0-45 resolves a small issue linked to StreetPass.
Here are the firmware notes from Nintendo's support page:
Resolved an issue where StreetPass would not work in some cases.
While this still technically improves the stability of the system, we can't help but wonder why Nintendo wouldn't add in its usual line about making "further improvements" and "other minor adjustments" to enhance the overall user experience.
If you view the older patch notes, this is always mentioned.

**** Nintendo!
My 3DS needs more stability, not some general Streetpass fix!
The running gag has finally run dry. This update marks the true moment that the 3DS reached it's apex.
Still an absolutely amazing handheld. I will dearly miss the 3DS
Wish they would just remove the miiverse icon and lowered the price. Nobody is going to pay 200 for a new 3ds when the switch lite cost the same
wow really nice of Nintendo to strike while the iron's hot š
I miss StreetPass, I loved getting my 3DS out on my lunch break and seeing all the people Iād passed.
It's dead Jim.
The 3Ds is pretty much dead now.
This is just a formality.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf changed my life, and I couldn't be more excited for New Horizons.
Erm... what the hell was the point of that?
Nobody even uses StreetPass anymore.
I had been to two conventions last year and barely got any hits. Nintendo was in attendance at one of the conventions (with demos of Smash/Super Mario Party/Diablo 3). While I was manning one of the booths with some friends, I did walk around the convention centre on several occasions, and my efforts had been mostly fruitless.
They should have implemented something similar for the Switch instead (though there wouldn't be any games at present that would support such functionality). The local communications in Sword/Shield is a step in the right direction though.
Makes me miss Streetpass so much, ha. Wish we had it on the Switch. š¦š
@TommiKinder Yessss. I used to have a quick route around town to collect my hits daily, ha. It was extra motivation to take a little drive. :3
Is it even a real update if it doesn't improve the stability?
For real though, I miss Streetpass. It was one of Nintendo's best gimmicks in a history of gimmicks. Wish there was something like it on the Switch.
No Stability?!, No way!!
Sound the alarms!!!
XD
well, yes, no good joke..., ups
Ehhh never got into my 3ds that much. Glad I have a switch now.
Ah Streetpass. Good times.
The Nintendo DeDeDeS:
It doesn't need any stability updates, because it is already perfect.
Oh God, perfection has been achieved! It's the end of all!
It better be. My house's foundation is on a bed of these things.
@Silly_G
"Nobody even uses StreetPass anymore."
I did.
Just by myself since i have two 3DS USA so i can always make a StreetPass by passing my two 3DS each other whenever i want.
It's dangerous to pass the streets alone, update this.
I'm pretty sure that 3DS is now so stable it can stand on top of a single spike of sonic
@PBandSmelly I missed it for a month or two.
Then I got a new battery and the thing is back in my bag.
@Anti-Matter yeah, even I got a couple hits last week, and that's in Minsk, where StreetPass hits were a miracle in the console's heyday.
....Ironically I started playing the 3DS again after buying MH4U, even though the thing has a circle pad problem. But at least the game is still playable, gonna have to figure out how to fix it or send it in for a repair soon, though.
@DAHstroy I couldn't get the appeal of Animal Crossing New Leaf. Could you elaborate on your experience please āŗ
@Anti-Matter : Sorry, I obviously forgot about the one guy in Indonesia with two 3DSes who still StreetPasses himself.
I was referring to StreetPass when used in public as intended, as if I even needed to clarify that.
@PBandSmelly As long as you don't throw it away and keep the battery healthy you will never have to miss it.
@Silly_G I still have some (around 1-3) streetpasses daily from public transit. It's reducing, but not yet completely gone.
Apparently the previous update fixed an incredible bug in StreetPass where one 3DS could take over another just through the StreetPass connection. Apparently Nintendo borked something minor when fixing it, which is what this update is for.
Great... Thanks Nintendo, now how am I going to keep my 3DS from tipping over?
It looks like we've hit peak stability.
@PBandSmelly Why, miss? It's still there you can still boot it and play with it.
We were so stable before we became confortable, we didn't notice we hit maximum stability with the previous update
There is nothing left now
Stability update incoming...
I recently went back to 3DS, my Switch is now a dedicated Youtube player. I will go back to the Switch when AC releases, if it's not a disappointment like PokƩmon Sword&Shield...
I miss Street Pass. I wish they did something to unlock the system somewhat and just let u play either via friend code or just somehow let u log on somewhere in a portal to get more hits. As mentioned, it was one of the coolest gimmicks from Nintendo. Was so pissed when I lost my Street Pass data.
@KitsuneNight huh I bought myself this black friday a 3DS game... I saw some kids with new 2DSs too with mario kart 7 and animal crossing
I thought Streetpass had been disabled. I haven't been able to have my two 3DS systems StreetPass in months, but they can connect to the WiFI and locally trade Pokemon.
Long-time lurker, first time posting.
I check this site daily for Nintendo news over my morning coffee at work and always get a kick out of the article subtitles/taglines. This one literally made me snort-laugh coffee all over my keyboard.
Thank you, Nintendo Life, for bringing a little extra joy to my life.
Welp I guess 3DS will never die..
Animal Crossing: New Leaf is an amazing game that was a perfect match for the 3DS's portability. The relaxing enjoyment that comes with the game is great, and the ability to play anytime throughout the day and have something to do (in-game) is fantastic. The different/random conversations had with the animals is hilarious, and gives depth to the characters. The different music every hour based on the season and weather is very satisfying, as well. The details and creativity make this cute game a blast to play.
@jco83 I recommend giving it a second chance if you can.
Believe it or not, I still get StreetPasses on mine from time to time. Of course, now that I'm running homebrew on mine, I'd love to see the confused looks on their faces when they see what I'm playing.
They have finally reached peak stability! Congratulations Nintendo!
I got a street pass a month ago or so in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I always take my 3DS with me just in case there is a chance I'll get one.
Has the meme finally died NL? No more jokes about stability?!
I still use Streetpass but no one else apparently does where I live.
@Silly_G maybe.... you didnāt get any hits because of the bug they just fixedš¤£
i wish i lived somewhere closer to more people back when the 3ds was hot. id only pass by 1 or 2 people on streetpass in the mall if i was lucky. streetpass is long dead now, but ill still enjoy the playcoins i used up for those games, truly charming
@boxyguy I thought that was the best part, that you could still pay even though you didn't pass someone! That Tetris ghost mansion was my absolute favourite! I still think they should release that as a standalone game! ^_^
The 3DS will live forever in my heart. And it's still my favorite system for JRPG's.
@Moonlessky This is true, I wish it did get one final price drop. I kept my eyes out for a 'New 3DS XL' for ages before I got a good deal - a few months back. The 2DSs are easy to come by for much less than they're sold for, but the New 3DS, not so much.
I still get the occasional Streetpass, it's fun. Still, I wish it was on my original 3DS that I lost on a train in Vietnam! Still playing my Switch a lot, but it's nice catching up on Pokemon White rn, and I have Samus Returns, FE: Awakening, Crystal, Ultra Sun and Chrono Trigger to play!
You remember when Rick made true level and Morty couldn't handle not standing on it anymore? That's what it'd be like to play on original 3DS firmware now.
@garfreek those new games looked really fun! i didnt buy any of them cause i barely got streetpass (or money to even buy games at the time) but the gardening game always looked interesting to me. the 3ds was a really fun time to be a nintendo fan
It's funny that Nintendo wants to push the Switch's handheld functionality, especially with the release of the Switch Lite, but does seem to have no intention to carry over this wonderful feature from the 3DS to the Switch.
What may hinder them from doing so? One feature too much for the Switch? Too battery demanding?
The retail death is actually in motion finally happening to for 3DS. Not sure about you guys, but I live in NW Chicago Suburbs and until just recently, Iām talking a month or less Iāve noticed a big change in the 3-4 Walmartās right around me. Their 3DS glass game case all dwindled down to how it is at Best Buy & Target. The āstandard approx 20ā as relevant as it gets game selection. Your group of Nintendo Selects, Kirby Epic Yarn, Pokemon, etc. but before Walmartās still had that random bunch of games that other retailers stopped selling new, years ago. They must have sent them off to a corporate warehouse to create more room for relevant consoles & accessories.
I anticipate in 1-2yrs the ābig boxā stores will want all 3DS removed to create more space for Switch Standard/Lite,PS5, āScarlettā, etc. and itās only Gamestop to shop for 3DS or Amazon (New and Preowned).
@boxyguy the gardening game was fun (breeding different plants, designing a cute garden.) But you'd get way better plants if you've met people multiple times, and I lived in the middle of nowhere..
Short answer... Yes.
im really thinking about selling my 3DS because its just collecting dust
If there ever is a final system update for the 3DS, I would love for them to remove the Nintendo Zone Viewer app and Miiverse from the 3DS's Home Menu.
